I'm looking to change the speaker in my peavey c30.  I've had it a few years now and it is still stock and whilst I like the sound of the amp, the blue marvel speaker has some annoying qualities to it.

Any suggestions on what to replace it with ? ....Howie ??? (I'm not suggesting I replace the speaker with a Howie, that would just make the amp completely silent  ;D)  any ideas Howie ?
Jon,

I put an Eminence Governor in mine.  I really liked it. After I sold it, I got identical cabs (Avatar 1x12s) one with a Governor, one with a Private Jack.  The Gov is Emi's take on the V30 and the PJ is their take on a Greenback.  Then I got another cab and a Wizard (Emi's take on the G12H).  I later owned all three celestions and got to compare them directly to my Emi's.  In all 3 cases, I preferred the Emi to the Celestion.  The tricky part is picking one...  If I had my Classic 30, I'd try a Private Jack and a Wizard.  My first thought is that I'd have preferred either the PJ or Wiz over the Governor, but I never got to try them in that amp, only with my others.

Further, there are better speakers out there if you want to spend more.  The Scumbacks (by what I've heard, I haven't tried them) are superior to the Emi and Celestions, but they cost more.  The Wharehouse Guitar Speakers have many people saying they are better than Celestions as well and they are cheaper.

In a nutshell, there's no easy answer here.  Speakers are the most important and biggest difference making thing you can do to an amp.   But from now and only picking from speakers I've owned and tried, I'd say Private Jack #1.  If you aren't a greenback fan, then Wizard.
Maybe the website below can help you out Jon?  Once you've nailed down the category you can try out competitor versions.

BTW - If you like the normal Celestions, you might want to consider Avatar's Hellatones.  These are actual Celestions made in the UK (not China) that have been slightly broken in already.

Interesting thoughts there which set me off on a tone quest from both the site Craig mentioned and directly on celestions site.

I think I will settle for a G12H30, has that vibe that I'm looking for.

all thoughts appreciated.

...if I can find a 16 ohm one !  they all seem to be 8 ohms
Just ordered one of these

Slight revision:  I'm not going to swap the speaker in the C30, I'm going to build a new cabinet for the G12H30 just to keep my options open.
I've always like the G12h30 as an overall primary choice.  I have it in a 1x12 paired with another 1x12 loaded with a Vintage 30, then I have a 2x12 loaded with the same pairing (Hellatones actually).

The only speaker I've liked more was the Alnico Blue, but I was always scared of blowing it out since it's only 15w (the Alnico Gold is 50w but I've never heard it - supposedly it's the same, though I'm not sure...).
Good choice Jon.  The G12H and it's variants are best described (and often described) as a cross between a greenback and a v30.
I have a G12H30 in my Tweaker and it took a looooong time to break in.  I'm talking three months of weekly three hour jam sessions with the amp halfway up.

However, I do like the speaker now.  Was way bright for a long time but is now very well balanced.

My current tone joy is speakers with hemp cones.  Weed is friggin awesome, and in speaker cones?  Killer. I haven't yet heard one I didn't love.  Cannabis Rex, for example, and weber offers it as an option for a lot of cones.
I was going to ask you how long it took to break in the speaker.  Emi's are known for sounding better out of the box than Celestions.  I swear that when I sold my Greenback, it was still crispy.  I know it wasn't even broken in yet and I had it for over a year.  But I had sold my Crate Powerblock before I got it and had no way to do my normal procedure I do with new speakers.

hemp cones, huh?  Far out.   ;)     They are supposed to be THE cure for a fizzy amp.  Rolled mellow top end.
Hemp sounds killer.  It really does have more warmth and girth and less bright to it.
i put a vintage 30 celestion in my peavey 1-12 vavleking it rocks :P :P
I finally got-around to swapping the peavey C30 speaker for the Celestion G12H today.  What a fucking job that was.  The only way to get at the speaker is dismantle the entire amp.  Anyway, all done.

It's a nice sounding speaker and has got rid of that nasty "hurt your ears" quality that the C30 stock speaker has. However, one downside is there is now very little low end coming from the cab at all...wasn't really expecting that.
A G12H30 takes a looong time to break in.  And yes it's not got a ton of low end, it's pretty well balanced.  However it does have the advantage of not having the upper mid peak of the V30...

Press the Cab button, then use the browse knob to scroll through the different speakers/cabs.  ;D

Definitely not going down that road again....all real from now on.
Plug for Weber speakers... radical.  I've used a couple, mostly Jensen clones, very popular for their copies of the C12n, etc. What's nice about Weber is they offer most speakers in multiple resistances, offer you different options for doping, and on most speakers offer a hemp cone at no upcharge.

I just scored a ceramic Silver Bell on eBay, 50 watt, 8-ohm, hemp cone, for $80, to replace the anemic 10" stock speaker in my Fender Super Champ XD (yeah, I also replaced the cabinet).  Lemme tell you this is a glorious speaker... they say it's for Marshall tones, but I am not exactly sure what Marshall speaker it's supposed to be copying.  But the tone of this speaker is superb, and the hemp cone really smooths out the high end.  Weber is worth checking out.  Yes, AlNiCo is not cheap, but their ceramic speakers are very well priced, and for my money, much more interesting than the usual suspects, Celestions and Eminence.  BTW, my Tweaker's got a G12H30 which is a good speaker for cutting through, and over a year it has mellowed on the high end, but it's not a speaker that's ever going to have a lot of bottom end.  The Silver Bell with hemp cone slays it IMO.

Here's the sound clip that sold me on the ceramic silver bell... it's from the Weber site, a strat through some sort of Dr. Z amp.

I hadn't read any of these before I bought but people have nice things to say about them, too...

I've heard LOTS of great comments about them.  LOVE their options.  The doping and wattage options are great ways for two guys to get the same speaker to work equally well in a 50 watt combo or an 18 watt one.  I've been wanting to check out a couple of these, and a couple of the Warehouse speakers which are also very highly reviewed.

Doc/Dale has at least 1 or 2 of these and loves them.
Late to the game on this one, but here is the company I'd check out.

www.scumbackspeakers.com

They are custom made for this company (which is actually owned by Southbay Ampworks) by Weber.  They have both recreations of the vintage G12H30's and Greenbacks.  They also offer them in 55hz and 75hz cones.

You sometimes can find used versions of these.  I've owned the Silver Bell and the Blue Dog and didn't like them NEARLY as much as these the Scumbacks.

I had both the 55 & 75HZ coned H Series speakers (G12H30 clones) in my 212 and they sounded awesome.

They have a section on their website where you can write them for speaker reccomendations.

Seriously, these things ARE the shit.

Yeah Charger, they're more than you'd pay for...LOL.   ;D

Now if you want to check out a hemp coned speaker, check out ToneTubby's.  http://www.hempcone.com/tonetubby.com_new/tonetubby_006.htm
Seriously, $300 for a speaker?
Tonetubby's are expensive buggers.  I prefer the Scumbacks away.  Lol
Must be made from stickybud. LOL  That's a bunch for a speaker.

Howie, what were those offbrand clones, like the one you sold me?  Fairly inexpensive, decent results.  I'm still using it BTW.

I'd look, but it's not easy to dig out of an ISO box.

$300 is cheap compared to this!  ;D

Deano,  that "offbrand" has become a perferred speaker for many and are now priced about like Eminence speakers.  It is "Warehouse" speakers and many people prefer them over the Emi and Celestions.  I should have bought more when they were "intro" priced!

Yah I seem to remember warehouse speakers being around 25$ years ago? Am I wrong?  Seems to me like a good deal is the Weber signature series... a whole range of low power 12" speakers from $35-75.  From the watford valves samples, they sound pretty good.  No options for doping or cone though, and 8 ohms only.
yeah, they did some introductory pricing to get the brand name out.  The second wave was about $40-$45 which is what I paid.  THen they went retail. Some guys at TGP were smart enough to try them early.  One guy got 4 greenback clones, then 4 V30 clones and like them all so well he ordered 4 more of each, all while they were $20 per speaker!  After about a year he sold off 4 each for about $60 per.

I tried the Lead 80 clone.  I wish I'd also gotten a greenback or two, a Reaper (G12H clone) and a V30 clone.  MANY guys are saying all three are better than the Celestion and Emi versions.
