and a first take on it...
Sweet jam! lovely ringy'ness to the bends.
'Tis another reason I kept saying the Sheepster needs to record an album (CD, MP3's whatever - just polished full songs like Paul did).
His "style" happens to be just about exactly what I like best (tasteful phrasing - not just a bunch of scales and arpeggio wanking). :)
thanks!
out of curiosity... do you want a CD for the non-mp3 factor? better mix? actual songs?
of those, I might be willing to comply on 1) and 2)... ;)
My first take - completely dry :)

CD's are always nice because you have something physical that can be put into any CD player, but it really comes down to this:
- Actual songs
- Well mixed
- And a well mastered group of songs (call it an album, a CD, whatever)
That's what I meant by polished full songs. "Have you heard the CD 'Ferrum Vellus' by Ironsheep? It's got some great guitarwork on it!"
:)
hmm, unfortunately, all that is outside my scope of interest at the moment... mixing, mastering, songwriting.
recording is mostly a means of critical examination for me - and throwing together a click track for practicing or to be the context for some riff. I'm interested in hearing whether I was bending to pitch, in time - or in an unusual time that worked, found a harmony that really sounded nice, how did that pedal sound... that stuff.
if the day ever arrives that I feel like I'm capable of writing songs for an album... it's possible, but I don't think I'm anywhere near that point today.
Don't make me play dirty...

Create a kick-ass album of songs or I'll reveal your real name to the internet world! (GASP!!!

Or not. :D Hey, I'm certainly not going to make you do it of course, but I still think you should know that some of us would find it very cool (the same applies to a second CD from Paul, but at least I have his first to listen to! ;) ). Your playing style is pretty much how I'd like to sound if I could play like that. :)
Sheep, you should just create a CD of a collection of Jams.....that's what I did! I can't be bothered with the constraints of a structured song :-) It is listed on Itunes, amazon etc (www.mushroom-farm.com takes you straight to itunes), and much to my surprise I have actually sold quite a few! This was really just an experiment to see if it is possible to promote and sell your own album, and yes it is! My playing is nowhere near your standard so it's definitely worth you giving it a go. It amuses me to think that someone somewhere has paid for my CD and is sitting about somewhere listening to it....and liking it enough to buy it. It's a funny old world.
interesting! I didn't really consider that - but it might work to re-record a group of old jams with current tones and drums. that would serve both masters. there would be a collection of tunes for mr. slave driver (;)) and I could have a current vs. past comparison for personal evaluation purposes. sounds like a fun project.
There's quite a few of your jams that should work. They just need a few tweaks to turn them into "songs" and not repetitive jam loops.
This current jam is an excellent example. The backing track (albeit a bit short like most BT's) has a lot more structure to it than most of the ones I've heard (and, personally, I'd love to hear this one as a polished tune from you). Except for being a little awkward at the start, your begining notes make a great line and I think that if you repeated those after the break it reminds listeners that they are still hearing the same song (plus it's a perfect time to make the BT longer).
As a summary, here are the areas that usually need some work to turn your jams into songs:
- Add intros and outros
- Create sections instead of using the same loop
- When you create a killer hook (like in the current jam at the beginning), reuse it occasionally
- Make sure the backing instruments sound decent
Um, yeah, that's it! :)
Since these (like Paul's songs) are instrumentals, you don't have to worry about vocals (unless you find some hot chick to sing for ya, but THAT'S a whole other topic! ;) ).
My Favorite sheep jam is attached - sounds like Jeff Beck on Plan B
There ya go! Now you have two songs for your first album. ;)
Anyway - back to the FNJ theme
Had another go
My take.
Ciao!
Marco
PS. +1 for the CD, Ironsheep ! :)
nice takes gents!
brbrn... good lord, it stalks me! ;) :)
What does brbrn stand for,
I had a job hunting it down as I couldn't remember what
it was called
where did that name come from ? is the track based on something or just a name you gave it ?
I was reading a beck interview - he was talking about some track and how he just went crazy with wahs and ring mods etc and referred to the whole thing as a barbarian jam... heh. not really related, but the name was there.
Ahh - well there's a clear Beck link style wise.
It's pretty much a done deal as a track though IMO -
Maybe the end could be a bit cleaner
And maybe a remix to bring those KB arps down in the mix a bit as they are a bit overpowering.
But it would slot in nicely as a track on an album.
it's next to impossible to fix that track... I did it with Reason - I don't think I have the midi/sounds anymore. :\
I tried a revisit once but that became a totally different tune really... think that one is just a moment in time.
So you can't mix it,
well leave it as is - add fade out at the end - done,
still a cool number.
yeah - it's going to have to go on a different album though! heh (see the "alright craig..." thread ;))
I think a group of experimental/ambient/mood tunes would be a cool next project.
