do any of you guys ever go back after you hear everyone elses take, and try to do something more like they did? Maybe not recorded, but just to do it. Just wondering. I've played along with a lot of these tracks over the last few years and many times will here one by Sheep or Fingers or someone else, that I really like, so I'll try to do something more like they did. Seems to be a good exercise for me as it forces me to go a different way than I did on my own.
Just curious if anyone else did this.
I do air-guitar to Sheep's solos, does that count? :D
Actually, I do save every backing track and many of the solos done over it so that I can study some once I get back to playing. Having been a life-long rhythm guitarist and doing very few leads, I still have a LOT to learn with regards to lead theory.
Maybe Sheep will make more videos of his soloing so I can steal a few licks. ;)

Listening to takes definitely influences things.
I usually try not listen to any takes before I do one for that reason.
When I do listen first - then I end up trying to deliberately do something different to the takes I hear which can be hard to do
when you've heard something that grabs you and sticks in your head.
Usually means going for a drastically different tone or change something else in approach like using fingers rather than a pick.
I don't usually go back and play around with jams again, after I have recorded one that is usually it.
Probably influences the next similar jam though.
Noel, I found that when I listened first, especially if several guys took a similar path, that I'd tend to play something at least somewhat similar. Almost like it was a "song" and I was going to play a version of it, rather than an open canvas. That's why I think so many don't listen first. You can get stuck there, or like you said, forcing yourself to do something completely different that may not be what you really feel for the track.
Craig, I do air guitar to sheeps stuff too. Only way I can keep up (or pretend too). And I do have a couple of his vids saved if you don't have them.
Yeah, I go along with that. I never listen to others takes first otherwise you can't help but steal from them, even if you try really hard not to. I like the "one shot at it" approach and leave it at that.
