You know this is a joke, right? Just checking, some people have been reposting this as if it was true.

LOL, yes I do realise it is a joke.....I just thought it was funny, especially that some people actually do believe it :)
Would be funnier if it were true!  I've read a few interesting articles regarding this lately.  Some say Samsung could cripple Apple as it is one of their major parts suppliers.  One person said that the cost of any Apple device would go up over $100 per, if Samsung cut them off.  Don't know how true that is, but he (and others I read) said Apple was cutting it's own throat with this suit.

Not true... Apple does buy a lot of parts from Samsung, but if Samsung refused to sell to them, they would be cutting off their nose to spite their face, and Apple has a whole bunch of suppliers they can use instead... for example they get displays from Samsung and Sharp.  The $1 billion fine (which will likely be in appeals for years) is a miniscule amount compared to what Samsung has already made from both the supply chain for the most successful and lucrative phone line of all time, and from copying Apple. ;)
I realize they have other suppliers.  The guy said that they got SO much form Samsung that if the settlement hurt them, and they increased prices or cut apple off, it would cost more per device to get parts from other souces.  Said samsung makes quality parts that meet apples standard and others might have to ramp up a bit do do that, plus the economics of scale with samsung give them lower prices anyway.  Again, just what I red.

To me it seems weird to sue your biggest supplier for making a product that YOU SAY is like yours.  Lets be real here.  There is only so much different you can make the appearance of these type devices.  There is a certain form factor that every maker has to stay very close too, whether its a cell phone or a 7 or 10 inch tablet.  Nothing very far away from that form factor makes sense.  Throw every cell maker in the work into a hat.  From 15 feet away, how many of them could you recognize by name?  Ironically, I can tell an iPhone from any samsung made from that distance.  Different OS, VERY LIMITED "REAL" differences in form are available....  I don't see how Samsung was copying or ripping off Apple.
It doesn't matter if you or I can tell the difference. It matters if a jury can tell.

In some sense it's inevitable.  One product is a massive win (iPhone by some accounts is 50% of Apple's revenue, and Apple as of last quarter makes more revenue than any other company ever).  Not copying that design in some sense leaves you vulnerable, because a lot of people want iPhones, but they want them cheaper.  The latest iPhone is always going to cost $199 minimum... you can get Android phones free or for very low cost.  So if you can offer the same feature set and a remarkably similar product, you can capture those people that want to save money.

If you make a guitar and put a strat headstock on it, you gotta pay Fender.  If you don't you're liable to get sued.  Same thing here.
Agreed, just saying for THESE devices, you are pretty limited in form factor.  A guitar can be any shape, so can the head stock.  But a phone or tablet is GOING to be rectangular so they are all going to appear similar.  IMHO, this would be like Samsung suing Toshiba, Visio, LG, etc for making wide screed TVs.  The aspect ratio is set, from there they are all pretty close to the same, looks wise.  They have to be!  Just saying.  Now if Apple makes something out of the mold, like their all in one computers, I could see others doing that infringing on their "thing" But if Apple makes a mac book, do they sue everyone who makes a laptop computer?  Same form factor.  Again, IMHO, just saying, etc.  Not arguing at all, just don't really "get" this one.
Yeah. The difference is, every step of the way in developing the iPhone, Apple filed and received patents on their technology.  Remember, things like multi-touch, touchscreens, and the entire dynamics of the iPhone screen were brand new when the iPhone came out. And the patents were in place. TVs have been made in every possible form factor for over yo years, and chances are, you pay a license fee when you make one, based on accepted patents.

To me it's a "don't hate the player, hate the game" world. Patent law in technology is spiralling out of control, and companies file extraneous patents all the time, and litigate based on them all the time.  However, if Apple hadn't patented everything they did on the iPhone, it's an absolute guarantee that someone else would have, and then they would have sued, and they would have won.
