The Watering Hole

I've asked similar questions before, but I need some movie/vid content on my iPad.  I have paid for DVDs of Dexter, That 70s Show, some movies etc.  When we go places and I get stuck, I don't want to have to carry my laptop and DVDs with me.  We lost power during storms last week, and I had some downloaded vids on my Galaxy tab and I watched them til bed time.  I want to get things on the iPad which has longer batter life and bigger screen.  

Walk me through from ripping or converting (including what format to use, what resolution is best and what free software to use  :)), to how to get them on the iPad.  I DO have Goodreader which I understand makes this easier.

Hey Howie, for ripping, download a copy of HandBrake.  http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php  

Rip to MP4 format for iPad.  Try these settings.

Video:
Codec: H.264
Size: 640*480 or 1280*720
Bitrate: 2500kbps
Frame rate: 30fps
Audio:
Codec: aac
Sample rate: 48khz
Bitrate: 160kbps
Channels: Stereo

Goodreader?  I thought that was just a PDF reader?  

The rippers I use all have both iPod and iPad conversion targets that automatically optimize. However I haven't looked at what to use for decryption in a while, I just use netflix on my iPad or iPhone mostly.

I google everything.  I wanted specific advice from "do-ers" on this one.   :)  It was funny though.  

Chris, Goodreader reads all types of formats (including movies) and I've ready several places that it's a good easy way to get movies on your iPad.  

Will handbrake allow me to rip these from DVD?  I'm thinking it won't.
