ironsheep — Feb 20, 2012hey dearth,
I've heard akerfeldt commenting about porcupine tree's genius in interviews... so, naturally, I'm starting to get interested in them. heh.
Hey Sheep,
I bought In Absentia, just now starting to listen to it and like it a lot so far... any other PT albums do you recommend? seems like they have some pop tendencies I'm probably not going to like all that much... any help would be appreciated!
Steven Wilson, the lead singer/guitar/writer for P. Tree actually produced some of Opeth's albums. Steven Wilson is pretty much the heart and soul of that band. That band started out with just him doing everything, with the drums being looped.
The funny thing about In Absentia is, despite some pop inclinations, is the dark matter it deals with. Most of the disc deals with the psychology of serial killers and psychopaths. Check out the lyrics. "Blackest Eyes", the MOST popish, is about a serial rapist. "Strip the Soul" is probably the darkest. Bottom line, their lyrics are pretty deep. The biggest thing that blows me away about them is the focus on "song" writing.
I actually dig In Absentia quite a bit. It was the first disk I ever bought of theirs. From newer disks, I dig, "The Incident" and "Deadwing". Both are a little less popish and get some really good grooves. From their earlier years, I dig, "Skies Moving Sideways." VERY much a tip to Floyd, especially the title track.
Their live DVD's are awesome and are a great live act. I am particularly into the DVD, "Arriving Somewhere...". I've seen them on their last two tours (both at the House of Blues in Cleveland).
Tree's drummer, Gavin Harrison, is a freakin' monster. He can do some rhythmical things that are pretty awesome.
If ya have any more questions, just fire. ;)
