What are your 3 most favorite tunes of all time?

Mine are:

1) Won't Be Fooled Again - The Who
2) We All Die Young - Steelheart
3) A Little Less Conversation - Elvis

Strong Considerations:
1) The Beast and the Harlot - AX7
2) Wasted Years - Iron Maiden
3) Hotel California - The Eagles

I am all over the place with mine. What are yours?

FAV 3.....changes all the time but currently.

1.  Sweet Dreams, Hellecasters version
2.  Delights and Angers, In Flames
3.  Curl of the Burl, Mastodon

I can't call these ALL TIME favs.  But they are still in heavy rotation on the ipod.
of all time... hrm, that's tough.

1) Mozart Piano Concerrto No. 23, K.488 - Adagio
2) Chopin Nocturne, Opus 72, No. 1
3) Van Halen, Hear About It Later - Fair Warning.

top three, by playcount, from iTunes tells a different story (haha)...

1) Engines of Hate - Nevermore -- 203
2) Supermassive Black Hole - Muse -- 201
3) Beautiful, Strange - Andy Timmons -- 193

not sure if that includes iPod plays... don't think it does since I've listened to "In Live Concert at Royal Albert Hall" (Opeth) on the treadmill way more than one time... oh well, the first three are really my all-time favorites - I had them burned in before there even WAS an iTunes, so they don't get played that much.

machine gun at the fillmore a close runner up for the third spot - but that's a favorite performance... not so much "song" or "tune".
There is no way I can really make this list, but I can say that any one of these three songs comes on the radio or on shuffle, and it never gets skipped, no matter what I'm doing, who's in the car, etc.

Yeah 3 tunes would be impossible for me to name...  So here are some random ones that i couldn't say don't belong on that list (i think that logic is correct, lol)

Metropolis Part 1 - Dream Theater
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin.  But then there's 10 years gone, and In My Time of Dying, and Achilles last Stand, and on and on...
pretty much anything off of Rush's permanent Waves and Moving pictures albums. Heck, I love Subdivisions, Analog Kid, Digital Man, and and a bunch of other stuff as well
Would - Alice In Chains
Super Crush - Devin Townsend Project
You're My Best Friend - Queen.  But then there's so much more from them as well...
When the Cradle Cries - Lemur Voice - just hauntingly beautiful, really just a part of a greater whole from that album
11 Dreams - Mercenary

i could go on and on...  But I have plenty of material to listen to today now, so thanks for making me stop and think Johnny. :)

There's too many to narrow it down to 3, but they fit into the following top 3 groups for me:

1) Led Zeppelin
2) Deep Purple
3) Howlin' Wolfe

I'm an old fucker, what did you expect  ;D
1) Crossroads by the Cream
2) anything by the Beatles
3) Purple Haze Jimi Hendrix.
4) Anything By Roy Buchanan
5) Anything by Satriani, Dixie Dregs, Santana, ZZ Top, Dire Straits, on and on, and on and on.......

hey dearth,

I've heard akerfeldt commenting about porcupine tree's genius in interviews... so, naturally, I'm starting to get interested in them. heh.

I bought In Absentia, just now starting to listen to it and like it a lot so far... any other PT albums do you recommend? seems like they have some pop tendencies I'm probably not going to like all that much... any help would be appreciated!
Some interesting choices...and surprising even.

Keeping mine vocal because instrumental would take to long to weed out the very favorites..

But asking for three is not fair anyway - as everyone has mentioned!

1) Walk This Way - Aerosmith
2) Still They Ride - Journey
3) Killer Queen - Queen
4) The Deeper The Love - Whitesnake

Honerable mentions

Don't Tell Me You Love Me - Night Ranger
Silver, Blue and Gold - Bad Company
Don't Stand So Close To Me - The Police
Mr. Crowley - Ozzy
The Rooster - Alice in Chains
Just Between You and Me - April Wine

Hey Sheep,

Steven Wilson, the lead singer/guitar/writer for P. Tree actually produced some of Opeth's albums.  Steven Wilson is pretty much the heart and soul of that band.  That band started out with just him doing everything, with the drums being looped.

The funny thing about In Absentia is, despite some pop inclinations, is the dark matter it deals with.  Most of the disc deals with the psychology of serial killers and psychopaths.  Check out the lyrics.  "Blackest Eyes", the MOST popish, is about a serial rapist.  "Strip the Soul" is probably the darkest.  Bottom line, their lyrics are pretty deep.  The biggest thing that blows me away about them is the focus on "song" writing.

I actually dig In Absentia quite a bit.  It was the first disk I ever bought of theirs.  From newer disks, I dig, "The Incident" and "Deadwing".  Both are a little less popish and get some really good grooves.  From their earlier years, I dig, "Skies Moving Sideways."  VERY much a tip to Floyd, especially the title track.

Their live DVD's are awesome and are a great live act.  I am particularly into the DVD, "Arriving Somewhere...".  I've seen them on their last two tours (both at the House of Blues in Cleveland).

Tree's drummer, Gavin Harrison, is a freakin' monster.  He can do some rhythmical things that are pretty awesome.

If ya have any more questions, just fire.   ;)
great, thanks for the suggestions! I'll start in on those next.

I went for "In Absentia" based on the cover art... lol.
Yeah, it is pretty cool art.  They use a this photographer/artist for most of the artwork/video needs: http://www.lassehoile.com/

My first disk was also In Absentia.  I discovered this band quite by accident.  Awhile back I had bought a CD of a band called OSI: Office of Strategic Influence.  The main members on that disk were Mike Portnoy (at that time, Dream Theater), Kevin Moore (former Dream Theater), and Jim Matheos (Fates Warning).  On the cover advertisement sticker, it mentioned that Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree was a guest musician.  The name of the band intrigued me.  What the hell does a Porcupine Tree sound like?  Ordered this disk and have since bought almost all of their disks.   LOL

My favorite song on In Absentia is "Gravity Eyelids."  Love the atmosphere it creates.
yes! there are some really awesome sections in that song - I've listened to the album four or five times through now, definitely money well spent.

the only sad thing is that I hear some things on it that I've played in jams (little riffs or things that sounded a little similar)... kinda sucks to find out "sweet, that's original!" - isn't. heh.
Heh, I hear ya.  One time was noodling on a heavier riff thinking the same thing.  5 days later I picked up a copy of "Paradise Lost" by Symphony X and heard a more advanced version of it at the end of the 2nd song.  I prefer to think that Michael Romeo tipped his hat to me...HAHAHA!!
I had the same number one until The Incident came out.  Now its Time Flies at one and Arriving at two.
