Rolling Stones top 100 guitarist.

LMAO!  Other than #1, there isn't much there to agree with.

I've seen this in years past.  More of a popularity contest with "fans" than a rating from guitar players.  You've got guys who never even played rock and roll...  Joke of all jokes, where is DiMeola?   ::)  Where's Yngwie?  Petrucci?  Eric Johnson?  Where's freaking Robin Trower?

There are clowns on this list (cough) Cobain (cough) who aren't even "good" guitar players, much less all time greats.  There are average and good guitar players, who were in super big bands, that were NEVER great guitar players.

Blah blah blah.  LOL
It is a popularity contest, simple as that. Of course none of those guys is the best rock guitarist from a technical and skill based criteria, although I can say that a few of those are some of my favorite players, but "best rock guitarist of all times." nah.......... Just most popular is what really happens in those polls.
rolling stone is the music industry's barbarous relic - time to let it go. no longer relevant imo.
+1

Top 100?  Wow, I didn't realize there were more than five!  (Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Mick Taylor and Ronnie Wood.)  :D
Wow... Just looked at that turd of a list - not even CLOSE!  Immediately noticed that Walter Trout's not even ON the list.  On a Top 100 done by other guitarists he was tied for third...
Kurt Cobain did more for guitar than half the guitarists I see on any list. I always laugh when people slag him-- you guys are living in the past, where rock songs were often set pieces for guitar solos and the songs quite often sucked. Cobain ushered in a different way of thinking about the instrument and a lot of music I love owes him a massive debt, as does the music industry ebjch was killing itself with carbon copy crsp for twenty years  Yet ask a bunch of "guitar players" and he's a no-talent hack.  It's not 1985 anymore, and g-d willing never will be again.

Was he a fucking shredder wizard? No, I could outplay him. So what? He changed rock guitar more than any horde of nameless shredders ever did, and he deserves the status many current musicians afford him.

As for the rolling stone list, it always sucks. But their goal is not to turn you on to a bunch of dudes you never heard of, that's why we have YouTube and Facebook and message boards.
;D ;D OK, maybe not much here to debate. ;D

But....I think there are 2 ways to judge guitarist, really 3.

The 1st, simply known and successful is all that is required.

The 2nd, a really good technical player that does very hard to play pieces really well.

The 3rd, just does what he does and sounds good doing it, like BB King.

This is all subjective, imo. I couldn't care less about someone who "shreds" really well. I like little effects and clean sounds. Others like shit loads of distortion and and all the effects possible. The likes go on and on and vary quiet a bit I'm sure. I like SRV"s playing but don't care much for his tones. I like his brothers tone better. I honestly don't know how anyone could make this list in the first place. IMO, it would take a pretty arrogant  person to even consider it.

I love to watch DT, I think their guitar playing is among the best rock bands I've ever seen. But I surely wouldn't consider listening to them because I don't like their music, at all.
I don't like their music, at all.

>:( you blaspheming hillbilly!

;D ;D ;D

I always disliked the general sound of his music, so I never paid much attention to it, but there is nothing in what I have heard that leads me to believe that he was a stunning guitarist, just banging out chords which is all I ever heard him do, does not impress me all that much. However I never listened to his music that much, just on the radio if I was in someone elses car, otherwise I would have tuned to another station immediately. They guy seemed like a downer from the music of his that I heard.

Of course I do not agree with the poll either. Those guys were just the most POPULAR, not the BEST, but I sure liked their music anyway.

Disclaimer; I also like George Thorogood's music and he only knows one lick, so what do I know..........
If they made up a list of the 100 best guitarists from a technical standpoint there'd be 10 guys on that list that any of us had heard of. I'll stand by Kurt Cobain just like I'd stand by John Lennon, or even, fer chrissakes, Jimi Hendrix. Each of them can be outplayed by hundreds of guitarists currently living and yet, each is indelibly important to rock guitar.
By that standard you would have to give some love to many blues players and, or, blues music in general.

How can you make a top 100 list and incorporate all the different venues of music without being biased to the particular venue you like? Wouldn't it make more sense to make a top 10 blues category, top 10 rock category, etc? Just break it down a bit?

I thought I might get a little grief from you on that. ;D But they are the most impressive group to watch live that I've ever seen. (I mean live as in TV)
It's Rolling Stone.  They cover industry rock.  Their top 100 list is going to be about industry rock and the formative guitarists in the mainstream.  Blues guitar magazine would have a different list, as would any genre-specific magazine.
If they are about industry "rock", why include BB King on the list at all?

They are arrogant. And biased. The list means shit.  ;D
Let's not forget that it's the editorial staff of this rag that also has a big stake in determining who gets in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

They've missed quite a few HUGE ones so far...
Chicago
Rush
Kiss
Deep Purple
Judas Priest
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble (if BB King can get in, so can Stevie Ray...he was more rock & roll than BB)
Cheap Trick

Just to name a few...how the FUCK are these people not in the Hall of Fame before two-and-a-half-hit non-rock-and-roll wonders like the fucking Righteous Brothers? Or ABBA? Come on...even CHIC was more rock and roll than ABBA. (I love Chic and am pissed that they didn't get in this year)

Shameful...but so typical of the Rolling Stone mentality, which is why this list is a fucking travesty.
Tripper
I think they've missed the boat, period. This list is like telling a joke at a funeral. Awkward.
A Rolling Stone gathers no clue...  ;)
