The Watering Hole

Ok he is ending a place we all liked a lot, but for the longest time he gave us a place to meet and hang out and that counts for a lot. I am truthfully grateful to him for his efforts on all of our behalf.

Ok so it went sour at the end but that can't be the totality of the experience stacked up against all of the good times.

So I think if any of you are pissed at him, let that  anger die with the forum and let us welcome him over here.

He can then become as big a pain in the ass to us as we obviously were to him at times.

WTF the ride is over and we can pick it back up right here. No grudges.

Come on guys, lighten TF up it is only a little wrinkle in a long and enduring good time.

A couple of the guys seem to have a little anger at him from comments I have read here and back there. I just hope that we can all just forget about the last few days of the Hole and welcome him over here.

I don't think anyone is really pissed at him, and wouldn't be simply for closing the Hole.  They're just giving him some shit for the way he ended it.  If he had come out and said "We've had a good run, but I'm tired of all the work keeping this joint going and it won't convert to the new software so I'll be closing the doors soon" then I think there would have been a slightly different reaction.  It would have been nice to have one last month so that we could all participate in the final sendoff and not have to rush out the door to find a new place.  Maybe he wasn't paying the mortgage and the bank is foreclosing on the Hole?

I don't harbour any ill feelings. I'm actually surprised he hosted it for as long as he did, and appreciate that fact.

Although I appreciate him hosting the Hole for so long, several times when he bitched about it, he got good solid offers to move the whole thing somewhere else.  Hell, I offered to host the Hole AS IS, even moving the entire application to an offsite host.  Every time he was given the opportunity to offload the responsibility and "let go" he had a change of heart.  

To do that, several times, then to come out and say "the Hole is gone in a week" and not be available to give any sort of help in moving it, archiving it, or even answer a single fucking post?  That's weak.  It was his forum because he hosted it, but 99% of the content on it was created by us.  

The decent thing to do would be to help us move it somewhere, and give us the time to do it properly.  I think Mark is a nice guy, but I don't take kindly to anyone playing dictator.

Hopefully -  Mark will show up over here.

Don't think it is any bigger deal long term  than any other shit that had flown around in the past.

I just noticed that you can upload files up to 7mb to this board - good for guys without a webspace.

To be fair, the hole is not gone yet...  We're having time to do things, and unless we somehow manage to severely piss Mark off by whining and bitching about all this then I imagine he'll accommodate the transition.

I dont know what kind of financial, personal time or whatever other kind of commitment running the Hole took, but if the guy got tired of it, so be it. Hopefully he will sign up over here. Mark was always cool to me, even when I told the whole place to go fuck themselves, he kinda set me straight on my attitude.

One thing is for sure, it was a cool place. If indeed it is shut down, it wont be that big a deal thanx to Charger and the Bert Cave.

For the idea of just shutting it down when there have been attempts to save it and offers to ease the burden.....well I am with charger on this one.

But at any rate it doesn't do me any good at this point to be sour about it.  I have a new place with all the same guys.  To be honest that was the thing I was think I would miss the most.  I've built relationships with people there and it was convenient for me to pop into the Old Place and check up on people.  

I can't really bitch.  I have a new place thanks to charger.......so I'm done talking about the old place.

That's the only part I don't get.  I GET not wanting to run it... the guy was hosting the thing off his own servers, fer chrissakes, that's beyond ludicrous in this day and age.  I GET not being happy with the direction it's gone.  I GET having other things to do.

What I don't GET is when someone else steps up, says--ok, FTP it here and I'll host it, you can wash your hands of the whole thing... why not just go with that?  Why would you instead shut it down?

Sorry, that's just not my way of doing things.  If I had other offers to run it and offload it entirely, the only reason I'd shut it down would be to spite the members.

I think he was feeling responsible for some of the bitching that was going on over there. Anyways he is keeping it going. So I will continue to post over there as I will here.

I kinda got sideways with some folks because of my opinions over there, and did a little bit of the conflicting myself over many subjects. The thing I learned from that was to not take anything I read on these forums to heart. Just let it all pass. And try and be a little more thoughtful in my replies. Because if you insult your target person, you also insult every person who reads your posts if they are friends of the your target. I used to be a lot ruder in my early days of Internet posting, but over time I learned to lighten up, after all it is easy to be an asshole while safe in front of a computer monitor, there are no physical consequences.

So fuck it, on with the good times, and let the past reside there.

I'm not Mark, but guessing it's because deep down he was not sure that he really wanted to let it go.  

I get both sides.

My only real point is that I would never run a board because I know I don't have the patience for the B.S. that goes with it, so I really appreciate those who do, and understand when they get frustrated by it.

I understand that.

Maybe a board should not be run by any individual persons emotions.
