Forget the crickets and listen to the new Rush disc.  It's worth it.

Disclaimer - despite it being a return to past sound and styles, it is not proggy like Farewell to Kings thru Moving Pictures discs.  There are still occasional odd time sigs tho.  What is great about it is the energy level thru the disc and some goosebump inspiring moments scattered throughout.  What is really noticeable to me is that there is really no "throwaway/skip this" material, which is something i think they've been plagued with since the late 80's.  IMO the albums since then have each had a few good tunes and then 70% filler that all tended to sound the same.  This album has all the beef that's been missing, lol...

Really Paul?  That's awesome!  My last favorite disk was Moving Pictures, so this has me excited.  I've often thought the same thing...lot's of generic sounding filler.  

Well again, it's not proggy like Moving Pictures.  But it is pretty damn good.

I do have one complaint about the mix though...  Like many other releases these days the overheads/highat are too low in the mix.  Pretty nice sounding otherwise.

Ok...  I think I'm going to go for this...  :)

Hey Paul, thanks for the heads up.  I have all the Rush albums (don't want to start a fight, but I really do! LOL)   except the new one, and pretty much agree.  Moving Pictures is my favorite. I did love the Synthy stuff they went to after that which was still very proggy.  Then around the Presto album they got less proggy, less "great songs per album."  Anything after that only gets an occasional listen from me, while the older stuff gets heavy rotation.  

I'll get this one right away.

I've now listened to the latest one twice (bought yesterday).  I think it may grow on me.  :)

Craig, I have the R30 DVD (DTR Jr bought it for me for Christmas a few years ago).  It's awesome. You need it.  

Hopefully picking up the new one at lunch today.  

Craig, why all the collections?  is there any "previously unreleased" material on those?

And by the way, be sure to spend some time reading the booklet and lyrics.  The little narratives are cool and help explain the "concept".

I seem to do that with lots of bands (I have this bit of OCD about "completeness" which I could do without!  LOL)...  Sometimes there is new stuff, sometimes just new renditions but, most of the time, I have the collections before I get all the studio albums.  I've got thousands of albums now, but only about 1,500 are actually CD's and those are packed away in printer paper boxes.  The rest I now buy the download of, I miss out on the literature, but I get the music cheaper!

Unlike Howie, I rarely go to any concerts (in fact, in the last few years, I haven't gone out much at all).  Instead I use the money to buy a few albums.  My business partner wanted to go see a new movie which turned out to be at an IMAX theater in 3D, but after finding out the film was $24(!), he changed his mind.  I look at it like a pint of microbrew up here is $5 (tip included), so skip two beers and buy an album!

Also, I tend to buy a LOT at once after negotiating a big discount.  It wasn't uncommon for me to buy nothing for a couple of months then go into a music store (remember those?  LOL!) and ask the manager for a quantity discount.  I'd get around $5 off per CD and then buy 100.  Then everything gets sucked into my iTunes and the physical parts get put into storage.  Oh well.
