what sort of speeds do you guys get over stateside ?
Generally here the average broadband speed is 600kb upload and 6mb download.
However, I have just now ordered a new fibre-optic line here that will be installed 3 weeks from now that will give me speeds of 19MB upload and 78MB download. At last, we are moving into the 21st century. This will make a huge difference to my document hosting business.
20Mbps down and 2Mbps up via cable.
I have 3 meg down and 256 K up, that is the best I can do for cheap around here. I am not at all satisfied with the upload speeds, but that is all they offer out here in the sticks without spending thirty bucks a month more. I do use the interned to download blue prints for my masonry estimating, and if there was more work, I would get the higher download speed.
My Garmin Map updater takes 3 hours to download the map and install it in the Garmin at my speed. Pretty poor if you ask me. But it may be partially their server. The map is usually is only 3.5 gigs.
Just tested it... 19.74mbps down, 7.73mbps up over cable... And I'm streaming a show over cable on the blu-ray at the same time.
That's unexpected. I thought you guys were ahead of us on connections etc.......but just been told the activation date is now 8th Jan so have to wait a bit longer to get superfast !
depends on where you live (how close to a central office with fiber) and how much you're willing to pay.
cable is more widely available afaik, and at the speeds mentioned here, not that expensive. $66/mo. is less than I used to pay for TV.
The price is interesting too. For my business fibre-optic 19mbs up and 78mbs down I will be paying £70, that's approx $110 monthly
wow, cool!
the cable here is without real competition, only satellite which is kinda wonky... there's nothing to push the price down. if they ever build the fiber radius out a bit I might see an alternative but I'm not holding my breath - suburban area, not that many potential subscribers to justify the investment and unlikely that it'd be cheaper anyway. still, can't complain - it wasn't really that long ago that I only had 56k modem as an option... well, 12 years ago, but that doesn't seem like a long time anymore. heh.
Comcast also. I suspect the 20mbps is a result of this being on wifi... i'm using WEP only which my browser limits to G speeds. I'll try with my desktop too...

Yep, slightly faster download over wired connection...

FYI - Mine was a wireless result.

Yes, you've probably got Wireless N enabled... My router supports it but not with WEP security, only with WPA, or with "no security".
