Looks like my job is going to require checking e-mail on the fly. They ordered me a a damn Iphone.

Any suggestions on use? Are they worth a damn? Not that I want one. >:(
They are kick ass.  I have one and I know charger has one.  I love the damn thing.  I didn't want one.  My wife got it for me on Valentines day.  Now I can't live without the damn thing.  It's the shizzle.
Man, they're sticking you with an iPhone?  What a tough life, bro.  ::)

I love keeping on top of both my work and home email and the sync with my Google contacts and Google calendar and my wife's Google calendar, all in one place.  Incredibly handy.
My company won't even kick in for two cans and some string...  ;) :D
all i know is  AT&T coverage   SUCKS FUCKING ASS!!!!!
iphone=greatest device invented (to me of course) in the last 5 years.

multiple email accounts, fantastic SDK for app developers, good/great portable web browsing, etc.....
I have to talk on a phone on and off all day long. I hate to hear it ring.

I don't like the size of the thing. I don't like having a cell phone on me every minute of the day and I sure as fuck don't want e-mails I have to check on a fucking phone to boot.  Handy every once in a while, maybe. I could live without either and be just fine.

But, I get the fucker next week. ;D I guess I'll have to learn to like it. ;D I got a raise at the same time they informed me about the phone, and their getting me a laptop. Oh boy. ;D I rather just have the raise and about a grand cash bonus. Fuck that other shit, the laptop and phone. ;D
Then sell the laptop and phone on the side for a grand and party.  ;) ::)

This is rare, but I agree with you 100%, Chase. :)

I LOVE my iPhone.

Here are five reasons why having an iPhone might surprise you and you might really enjoy having one:
1. It's an iPod that you always have with you, which is cool...music at the ready wherever you are...It's also a really nice phone, and you can customize the ringtones and pictures for the people who call you, which is fun.
2. If you ever need to look something up, the Safari browser and Google search rule.
3. There are thousands of games you can download that will keep you entertained when you have to wait around places (I've found this part very useful in doctor's offices.)
4. The Google maps feature is really handy when you want to figure the best way to get somewhere.
5. There are tons of productive apps available for everything from the aforementioned games to musician stuff to restaurant and movie times searches...I even have a freebie strobe tuner on mine I use sometimes. I believe there's a Peterson Strobe Tuner app available, too, which is quite handy. :)

I'll be shocked if you don't end up loving it. I didn't really want one, but now I absolutely love having it. My wife gave me mine for my birthday last year...even with the occasional dropped call from AT&T, I'm a very satisfied customer. That should say something.

I guess I could end up liking it. We'll see.  :)
I have had an iphone for about 3 months now and it's an excellent thing to have....for me anyway. Mostly because I have various business interests and to be able to get at my various email accounts on the move at any time is a real plus so I don't miss any enquiries that bring me money :-)

The one thing I hate about it (in the UK anyway) is the O2 contract.  The standard contract is good value £35 per month with 600 minutes of phone calls, 500 texts and all internet and email on-line time included. Good value.  However, I wanted to start using the "tethering" feature that enables you to connect your laptop to the iphone and use the iphones 3G connection from the laptop.  I was really surprised that when I went to activate the tethering, O2 want to charge me a futher £15 per month if I want to connect my laptop to it.  What a fucking con....    How about over there in USA, do you have to pay extra for "tethering" ?

Only real downside to me is no flash support.  The iPhone is my go-to guitar tuner, I use it at every gig.
Jon,  I have a Blackberry.  They charger for tethering, latching, or whatever and it is about $30 per month.  Don't know for sure what they charge on Iphones.
"tethering".

Do fucking what? ;D ;D
Hookbender — Oct 14, 2009"tethering".

Do fucking what? ;D ;D

You're a redneck, tethering is what you do to keep your women from running away.  ;)
:D

Some companies also call it "latching."

Hmmmm, I thought that meant to get the tobacco out of your mouth and put your teeth back in. ;D

that's interesting, similar price to here which is unusual, althogh it would be interesting to know the iphone tethering price there. I still think that is a con as you end up paying for the connection usage twice.

This message was sent from my iphone
I agree.  Told the Verizon rep when I got mine... " so what you are saying is, I can stay on the internet all day every day with my Blackberry, but if I want to use that online connection with my laptop it costs an extra $30 per month, even though the connection is already paid for and being used by the phone?"

YES!  Basically, like everything else, it's the new thing and as with all technology, they charge up front, then competition and advances in technology make it cheaper and cheaper.
Yeah that sucks, but isn't that extra $30 bucks much cheaper than having a extra contract with Verizon for your laptop on the go?

Do what? The 1st or 2nd, whatever, biggest coverage provider's actual coverage sucks? I think that depends on where you are, right?

I have Verizon and they are awesome. Even their customer service is excellent. Gonna hate to change, to be honest with you.

I don't have it.  If I'm on the go, I use my Blackberry.

Then  stay with Verizon and get a Blackberry instead.   ;)
If you are in a metro market, AT&T has solid coverage. For the most part. Outside of that....get an iPhone and a Verizon MiFi card. Best phone coupled with best network. Expensive for both...but works if you travel or don't live in a city. The 3G coverage map below is accurate....or we would not be able to advertise it. Or you could go with the coming Blackberry Storm2...

mapforthat.jpg
Damn that's a unbelievable difference in coverage! What's up with ATT.?
They don't cover all that empty space where no one lives... ;)

Just as a rejoinder to that, this summer I was all over Tahoe, and I was able to get coverage in places where I could never get coverage before.  Out in the middle of the desolation wilderness, I was able to get constant coverage with my iPhone.  Just last year, the same was not true.  That map shows 3G coverage... but when you can't get 3G, you can usually get Edge coverage, which is still functional, but slower.  You wouldn't want to download a youtube video over it, but I had no problem getting email, making calls, voicemail, and syncing my calendar.  I was initially freaked out by those coverage maps, too, but I've never had a problem like I would expect.  In fact, both times I was in Tahoe this summer, I ended up loaning my iPhone to make calls to Verizon users traveling with us who couldn't get coverage.
I have Verizon and man it is relatively trouble free. If you look there are spots where there is none because there is no population. I go through 4 hours of no coverage on the way to Vegas. But on the major highways it is par excellance.
I like Verizon. There customer service  is second to none.

Maybe AT@T will be good as well.
Consulted to VeriZon for seven years.  My friend made this for his unofficial email signature. :D

speaking from 10 years of wireless experience:

I have an iphone, a 3gs

Pros:  apple is sooo smart and builds killer products including the iphone, nothing like it in the marketplace.  I was a 10 year blackberry boy and the storm doesn't even compete.
the iphone is such a versitle and smart device

cons:  att&t sucks
i still drop 5 calls per day
if you have an important call,  prospect, conference call, customer etc.. you have to go into settings and drop down to the edge network.. no problems
but we are paying for freakin 3g, that is bullshit and att&t people wont tell you the truth or they lower there voice and lean into you and say,, i just drop to the edge netowork when I need
to make an important call.  I am talking about being in 3G for full bars of coverage and it drops people like  hot potatoe.  I am a 2K minute user per month

iphone has saved att&t's bacon

Verizon overall has the best coverage, barnone.
That sucks.  ;D Now I get a seemingly cool phone that I can't freakin use. ;D
Hookbender — Oct 21, 2009That sucks.  ;D Now I get a seemingly cool phone that I can't freakin use. ;D

I wouldn't expect failure from it just because other people are down on it.  I've been nothing but happy with mine.  If it had Flash support, I would be over the moon.  If you could expand the storage on it, I'd think it was perfect.
Buddy of mine kicked me his old 8gb a while back.  One jailbreak later and I'm using my Tmobile sim no problem.  This thing is hella fun and useful but I hear ya on the lack of flash support, thass just silly.
I just decided to add this to the Iphone thread rather than start a new one.

I loaded some albums on my Iphone today. How anyone can think this thing sounds good is beyond me. Major adjustments on my mixer needed to make it sound decent. (Playing through stereo monitors.) then did a test with AKG 240s....sounds like shit. Apple really needs to improve this big time. Completely unbelievable a expensive device like this, apple 3gs 32gb, $299 Iphone, can sound this bad. Shit. Maybe if I had my mixer straped to my leg while jogging with my headphones on it would do the trick. ;D ;D

Not trying to beat a dead horse here. I just can't imagine someone thinking this thing sounds good....or that hooking up $600 bucks worth of equipment to it, sorry Craiger, makes it sound good. Shit, I hope so. A $50 dollar mixer does wonders. ;D Shouldn't need that shit to have a pretty clean sound, even with an mp3 player. Get a Cowon for half the price of an ipod and a decent pair of monitors....your fixed.!
Not to mention the new Android phones we have coming out over the next 2 months. Motorola and HTC are first in line...check it out:

Fun stuff! 5 Megapixel cam with dual flash, macro flash good to go, HD res html browser with the beloved 'pinch' technology (you can zoom out on pics by spreading your fingers outward at the corners of the pic....or zoom in by pinching in). Anybody who owns an iPhone knows what I'm talking about.

Long story short.....Verizon finally has an answer to the 'do you have something similar to the iPhone?'  The answer is YES. And from my personal experiences with these phone demos....I have to say yes....but better. I own an Ipod Touch. I keep it up to date and run a lot things through it. I love that little thing. But from what I'm learning....the Droid has a lot more capability due to its open platform. 10K apps available now. But in 12 months there could be 250K apps....because it is an open platform. Speculation....but from very educated sources. We will see.
Is anyone going to just make a nice phone any more?   :-?

Actually, I keep hearing about how people don't need home lines any more, just their cell phone.  So, how about another request?  When will they make extension cell phones?  So you can have one in its charger in one room and be carrying the other around with you (same phone number).  My house is so weird that you can't hear someone only a room or two away so I have a wireless home phone system with eight extensions.  My friend thought it was excessive until he started working here 2.5 months ago and realized that without them you miss phone calls.

For a cell phone, all I want is a phone without buttons on the side that I keep hitting and one where I can actually hear the person easily without trying to balance a delicate toy against my ear.

Fuck it, maybe all I need is one of those Jitterbug phones?  :D

My question is, how much will it cost?  I know the cost is the same for the hardware with 2 year activation, but how much is the monthly data? When I looked at smartphones before I bought my iPhone, the iPhone was by far the cheapest with unlimited data.  $30 a month on a lot of phones got me some ridiculously low amount of data, like 5MB a month.  So I am interested to see how Verizon's pricing stacks up.

I also find it fascinating that they are campaigning so hard against the iPhone when they spent so long trying to get the iPhone into their lineup... what is their marketing campaign going to be if Apple ever lets them use the iPhone?  Doesn't seem like smart business to me.  Now, I know you work for Verizon and I'm sure you have good answers, but I don't think anyone has an answer for pricing data at $30 flat.  That kills any phone in the business.  And I really haven't met anybody who wasn't impressed with the way the iPhone worked yet.  If it was such a bad platform, you'd think the Palm Pre would've kicked its ass, but the Pre is fading.  So I'm interested to see how it shakes out.
The only thing I can see so far that could be better is the key pad. I'd much rather have a real key pad as opposed to the touch screen. I really shouldn't say anything negative though since I'm such a new user. I need to use it for at least 3 to 6 months or so before giving an opinion.

Monthly data for Verizon Blackberries and Smartphones is also $29.99. And that is unlimited data and email. So we are on par there.

As for our campaign for the iPhone....Verizon actually declined it initially. From what I have been able to gather from upper management, there was simply too much red tape attached to make it a solid business decision. And Verizon declined.

Don't get me wrong....the iPhone is killer. And it has been AT&T's saving grace. With the contract with AT&T soon coming to an end, there has been a lot of speculation in our world if we might be soon picking it up.

I attended a conference in Little Rock about 2 months ago. And that very question was asked in front of a very large audience to Steve Smith, our South Central President. The question was...'Are we going to get the iPhone?'

His answer was simple.....Not anytime soon. But he turned the tables and asked if we would be interested in something even better. That's when the 'Droid' phones by Google were introduced to our area. And we learned these would be available starting November 6.

So instead of fighting for the upcoming contract with Apple for the iPhone....Verizon partnered with Google. Less red tape, and more to offer.

Long story short....FUCK APPLE. FUCK the iPhone. We have Android by Google. It's an open system that will very soon have an 'app for that' along with our 'map for that'. I know that was cheesy...but it is what it is :)

And yes...for $29.99 you will have unlimited data and email. Blackberry, EnvyTouch, Samsung Rogue, All HTC phones, All Droid phones, etc....

AT&T has ONE phone that does everything. Verizon now has several to choose from. And they will probably work wherever you are :)
Heh, unfortunately I know it will definitely work at my house...  I've got a Verizon cell tower that I could probably hit with a golf ball (if I threw it!).  I'm forever cropping it out of my nice outdoor pictures, but you can see it on the right in this one:

http://www.nwdreamer.com/Pics/MtHood/MtHood4.jpg

In the beginning it only used to mess up my nice view, then they added a bright red light on the top and now I see that in my bedroom at night - yay...  :(
Wow. I must say this Iphone is damn worth having if you can use it for work. I have to get alot of documents signed and half the time the stores and businesses don't have fax machines. Now I can simply take a picture of the document and e-mail the document to the office, which is way more efficient. Checking my own e-mail on the fly is easy and I can get any information I need really quick. No more shitty faxes. So far, this is the best tool for work I've ever used. I really like every aspect of Apple products so far. No wonder their stock is so damn high.
Shit. AKG 240S headphones, Practical Devices XM5 headphone amp. For about $350 bucks the Iphone sounds O.K. Good match of equipment. A little info, for those who desire to use the Ipod part of this phone. :)

Much cleaner, true sound, Total bithead amp from headroom with AKG 240S. My standard on the road with laptop and mp3 player good sound!

Experiment by Mr. Headphone. ;D
Just saw one of those iPhone ads where they show how you can run apps while staying on a voice call.  I do that all the time on my iPhone, and I didn't know you couldn't do that with Verizon.  That kinda sucks!  I have to give AT&T and Apple a +1 on that feature... it comes in super handy for me all the time.
The best network for giving you everything for less is Sprint. My kid has a Palm (blackberry like unit) with a full qwerty keyboard, he pays 99 bucks a month for unlimited talk, unlimited texting, unlimited photo sending, unlimited internet access.

Still, I have the best reception on Verizon around here, so I am standing pat.
charger — Nov 23, 2009Just saw one of those iPhone ads where they show how you can run apps while staying on a voice call.  I do that all the time on my iPhone, and I didn't know you couldn't do that with Verizon.  That kinda sucks!  I have to give AT&T and Apple a +1 on that feature... it comes in super handy for me all the time.

They will be on it in a little while. I don't know what the AT&T reception around here is like, I know that I see lots of folks standing outside to talk on their cellies around here. Verizon is all bars full, never a dropped call in this area. We have a cell tower that looks like a Palm tree in our community, probably Verizons because of the reception I get.
In our part of WV, AT&T is actually quite good.  Verizon, through their takeover of Alltel, is just getting into the area.  Alltel/Verizon isn't bad either.  Sprint, on the other hand, totally sucks.  I was with them for awhile and I always had to be near the door to get good signal.  Another buddy of mine, who is a pathologist, would lose all signal when he went into the basement of his hospital.  When he switched to AT&T, he suddenly had signal.  I live in the country and have signal via AT&T.  Alltel/Verizon gets signal there also.  Sprint, on the other hand, has zero signal.

watch out for the worms!
I had an iPhone for a very long time (got it on the first day of release, and updated to the 3G on it's first day of release.)

With my recent new job and move to Hawaii, I shopped around quite a bit because I needed unlimited calling. Now, I loved my iPhone, and I still do, but their unlimited voice plan is $99 a month for voice ONLY. If you want unlimited texting, it's another $20... And because it's an iPhone, that's another $30.

So for unlimited voice and texting (Which I really do need all of those things now, crazy) it was going to be $150 a month. And the real bang is I also need a mobile broadband card to go along with with my cell service, so tack on an additional $60 per month for a 5GB per month datacard. $210 a month...

So needless to say I went shopping for a better deal. I looked at Verizon... Wanted a Blackberry Tour, pretty slick phone. Same deal, $99 for the voice, $20 for text, and the $30 data plan for Blackberrys. Now, I can tether the blackberry for my mobile broadband which is cool, and only costs $15 additional. fantastic.

And then I started my job... And started using my corporate e-mail... And WTF they don't use exchange server? They don't use Blackberry Enterprise servers? Who does that anymore? LoL... Anyway, the most productive way for me to access my corporate e-mail is via IMAP. And I did some research to find that IMAP access on Blackberrys is poop over BIS. Very limited IMAP implementation.

Now I really had no intention on using Sprint... But when I looked into their pricing plans, I could get the phone for $50 a month cheaper. And if you use their "Simply Everything" plan, you get mobile broadband for $50... So for the price of an unlimited phone from AT&T or Verizon, I had everything I needed from Sprint.

I ended up switching from an iPhone to a Palm Pre. I wish there was a bit more support for the Palm Pre WebOS platform, because honestly, from a long time iPhone user the WebOS platform is a helluva lot more capable. It's a very unique experience. Everything on the phone is tightly integrated, which I likie.

Here in Hawaii the coverage from Sprint is unbelievable. I get 5 bars of 3g coverage 3 levels deep inside a damn submarine??? I'm getting phone calls there and people stare at me like I'm crazy. In the furthest areas from cell towers on the western most parts of the island I'm getting amazing coverage when others with ATT and Verizon get nothing. I couldn't be more pleased.

I don't really use a lot of third party apps, so I'm quite happy with what the Palm Pre offers right out of the box. It's very slick and well refined. The multitasking is wicked. Only complaint is the keyboard. Kinda small.

Point is, there are iPhone alternatives out there that work well. And Sprint doesn't suck EVERYWHERE. I think that can be said about all providers. I know in Connecticut print was horrible. I was very hesitant to switch based on that knowledge, but I have been pleasantly suprised this time around with them. The price is right, the device is great, and the coverage is great as well... I'm a happy camper indeed
