The Watering Hole

I was convinced that it wouldn't be very good......and I was right, it was not very good at all.   What did you guys make of it ?  Personally I just wanted to hide behind the sofa as it just made me cringe with embarrassment.  The problem with any of these opening ceremonies is that they have to compete with the likes of Beijing which did a fantastic job in 2008.  British choreographers just don't seem to grasp the concept that when you have mass dancers and drummers that it looks so much better if they all do it together "in time" ....oh the shame of it all  :)

I would be interested to hear how the British "effort" was received in the states and elsewhere.

Your thoughts gentlemen.
I thought it was great. I love the olympics. It wasnt perfect, but how can anything that lasts that long be perfect.

Not sure what you were embarrassed about, but I really enjoyed it.
I guess Romney was right. They had a few problems that needed fixin. ;D ;D
Didn't have quite the wow factor of Beijing but not embarrassing. I enjoyed it.

Are you close to the chaos / is it having any effect on you?

I watched for you in the spectators along the men's bicycle course.  :)

I'm 35 minutes drive from London but there is BMX stunt riding or something like that which is part of the Olympics this year and that is just 5 minutes up the road from here, although haven't seen any traffic problems yet...
You guys are insane. I watched it with a bunch of my buddies in Tahoe, all of us thought Beijing could not be topped, and we thought the London ceremony wiped the floor with it.  Best opening I've ever seen.  Not only did it have an amazing story to it, but it had films cut in, amazing mechanics, brilliant timing, killer lighting, friggin Danny Boyle getting the Queen in a film with goddam James Bond, and fireworks that impressed me even more than Beijing, and that's where the friggin fireworks are made!  Also, the footage of the actual events has been incredibly engaging, even though it's too cold for the beach volleyball women to strip down.

Romney's comments?  What a fucking joke.

I'll reiterate: best opening ceremony EVER.
Charger, I'm not smoking the crack pipe. LOL  I loved it too.  I thought it was all VERY well implimented, I LOVED the queen/James bond thing and the fireworks were spectacular.  I thought it was very impressive.  And, I agree that the story/history that was woven through it was all VERY well done.  I loved it!  Interesting how differently a countryman didn't find all that as interesting as we did.  Wonder what ole Fingers thought of it.

Jon, I need you to rewatch this and see if you change your review at all.   :)
I think maybe it's because we see all this stuff every day.  The Queen,  Royalty is something that I have a big problem with anyway.  We are forced to pay through our taxes to support the Royal family...every single one of them draws their income from the taxes that we pay....even if they do nothing (which most of them do) they will forever be paid by us.  It's an outdated head of state that has no power and no place in the modern world.

I found a lot of the "story" in the opening ceremony to be extremely "corny" to say the least.  I recorded the whole thing on DVD so I will revisit it in  a few days to see if I view it differently 2nd time around, but I doubt it.  The only thing that I did find impressive was the fireworks. I love big firework displays so I enjoyed that.

Paul McCartney was a mistake in my eyes.  He's like some tired old aunt that they wheel out for birthdays and weddings.....nobody really invites her, she just turns up :-)

Other than that it was a blast  ;D
I am willing to bet no one will ever do a concluding fireworks display to Pink Floyd's "Eclipse" again.  That was the darkest, and possibly the coolest way I've ever heard Pink Floyd, and that is one dark set of lyrics to throw out there.  I'm still kind of reeling from that.
I love fireworks too, and that display was fantastic.  When they started playing the Floyd during it, I turned the TV up pretty loud.  Amy just shook her head and smiled.   :)
I saw it.  I don't think it top Beijing.  I think it was more efficient.  They zipped through all the countries at a very fast clip.  I thought the choreography sucked big time.  I like John thought the history part was a bit corny and could have seen them doing it a bit differently.

I loved the way they did the torch.  I thought that was bad ass.
Been loving the whole thing. Really spectacular. ;)

Also, big props to NBC (in the States) for providing HD streams, live and archived, of every event. Beach volleyball, here I come!
+1.  Been watching lots of things on the iPad.
Just when I thought that we couldn't get any worse, I am watching the closing ceremony.....what a pile of crap.....embarrassingly bad beyond belief.

edit: It redeemed itself in the last 10 minutes with "the who", other than that.... a big pile of crap !
I didn't care for several parts, but overall enjoyed it.  I guess I just enjoy the Olympics so much that the event itself is a big deal.
The closing was not too bad A bit of Freddie & Brian May.

And that Black Spice Gal sure held up well, yummy.
I missed most of the Spice chicks, but from the quick glance I had, the all looked good!
It's funny how different nations have different perceptions.  The spice girls have always been considered as something of a joke over here, can't sing can't dance, but yeah, the black chick is worth a hump !

The worst part of it was the awful Jessie J, damn that girl has a fucking horrible voice and absolutely murdered queens short set !

Hilarious.  First, the Spice Girls were terrible here too. I think most of their cachet now, if they have any, comes from Posh marrying Beckham.

Second, Jessie J, she's got one friggin single in the US that is all over the radio, and my daughters are both running around singing "that's right--uh huh--cheerio" all the time.  Driving me crazy.
