Is there a trick to the timing to starting the Rock N Roll (Zep) intro on time to the drums???? I can play the riff; but fuck me if I can start it at the right time - I simply feel like i'm holding my breath and hoping start at the point that it doesn't cause a train wreck.....
I've tried counting it in, but the (or my) timing is off.
Rich???? Anyone? We're doing it this week....... Am I not worthy..??!!?
No problem mate. As a drummer myself I grew up playing this song. The trick is that it doesn't actually start on 1. IT starts on the & of 3.
So if you are counting it out....& 4 &.....then 4 measures in 4/4 of drums.....then you get to come in.
If thats to confusing....& 4 , 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4.....then you start playing!
Whole thing starts on a pick up note. That's why it's such a bitch to count it if you think it starts on the one.
Funny, I have never counted in at all when I play it, just sort of "feel" when it's right.

I'm like you Jon. when doing the guitar thing.....I just know where it goes. It just feels good. It can be a bitch though when playing with other people that don't play it right because they assume it's on the one. At any rate....that's correct.

Appreciate the technical count in; I'll work on that - but I WAS worried that I was going to be told to play it by feel.
If I don't get this right it'll mean I cant feel myself as well as I should and thus I will give all my guitar gear away and become a bass player.

Playing off a backing track CAN be harder if it's a for shit backing track.
At any rate one of the things I always listened for whilst playing guitar on that song was a more steady stream of accented 8th notes. I don't know. I've heard that song so many times I just don't have to think about it. The ears hear auditory ques and the hands just know what to do. It's like being on auto-pilot.
I would punt and fire up the good old software drums

Our derummer is only 23 and has never 'listened' to the song; even for us. When I pointed out the intro he went apeshit with gushiness pride (for all drummers everywhere)
Then he proceeded to state that he's keep it simple by playing a standard 4:4 beat.
Fuck, I mean WHAT THE FUCKEN FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o
You should tell him that you appreciate him dumbing it down for himself.....but the rest of us wanna play it right.
Don't toss all drummers under the bus. i've been lucky to have some super professional drummers.
The last one was the smartest one ever. We were playing "Whipping Post" by teh Allman Brothers and there is a part that there is some unison band play while the guitars work up a scale that leads to the ending of the song. The other guitarist and I both "knew" how it went but strangely enough though we had started together we both kept ending in different places. My drummer interupted and said we were both wrong. He then counted it out. And then to add insult to injury he whipped out the recording and played that for us. he was right and me and Joe were both wrong. Which really sucked because I pride myself on KNOWING...the little that I do know. And Joe is normally right about everything as he is something of a prodigy. Fuckin' drummer know it all! HAHAHAHA

And we nailed it first time every time too.....
But the other dud with the killer (ie. it kills us) digital tone wants to play the same riff. Not fucking needed dude......
I'm gonna tell the band I want a new guitarist tommorow night.
