I got the new 9.7" iPad Pro... an upgrade to my previous original(!) iPad. So, this was MASSIVE in the upgrade department, to say the least!
It feels faster than my iMac, which is only fair since I have a 2010 iMac... but still... I'm impressed.
Anyways, it has... a pretty nice video camera! Here's some first try videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwHudqnMgOXBoE80TvAcZ-Q
Natural lighting wasn't very cooperative, oh well.
I figure I can post shit to YouTube whenever and store a gigantic journal of practice sessions on their dime... nice deal.
But, a better mic is in order. GAS!
It's way more fun to record this shit this way than to try to pretend I'm a "songwriter". Goodtimes.
Anyways, love the iPad -- highly recommend and I haven't even tried music apps yet!
Nice jams in all the videos!
First subscriber/supporter! :)
Thanks lwb!
edit: subscribed!
who else has a YouTube channel I should add?
Buckethead released 118(!) albums just last year alone (and 60 in 2014), and we're still waiting for your first...

Since I'll never be able to match Buckethead, there is no reason to even start! ;D
Subscribed! I finally got around to watching the videos today. I started one the other day when you posted them, but I had to do something, then I couldn't find them. I looked in all of the Music topics.
Careful, damn near got a headshot! LOL I noticed on a couple that the auto-focus picked different hands, so you could see it moving in and out. If you held a note and then picked, it would catch the movement. and then blur. Can you lock the focus? No biggie. Just an Observation.
Cool stuff!!!!
yeah, that one with the low light (thunderstorm passing through) was gnarly with focus. I have very little clue or experience with video... so no idea if I can lock it in... will be learning and, hopefully, avoiding camera GAS!
That said, I think I might get a GoPro... Leaving it out in the rain, rigging it under my car, on the headstock of the guitar or some other weird shit is very very persuasive.
No headshots!!! I have enough problems without somebody from my ancient past finding me. lol!
True story: a few years ago, this dude I went to FIRST GRADE with came across my brother somehow and got him to give him my email address. 35 fucking years man... come on. I just hate that kind of surprise!(he's a decent guy... but damn).
Thanks for listening!
I've subscribed. One thing you may be interested in is getting a zoom iq-5 (or later) stereo mic that plugs into lightning socket of either iPhone or iPad. It giv s great stereo recordings direct to iPad either for just audio or audio on video. I have one, brilliant gadjet

I'll check that out, thanks!
My room sounds like crap... not that stoked about trying to mic it better - cab in the closet sounds best. I could see using something like that on acoustic stuff though (in a room that doesn't sound like crap).

Even if the room sounds like crap it is a huge improvement over the ipad built-in mic, massive difference
I didn't realize this was a sub $100 mic - much easier call.
thanks again!
(edit: iq7 is on the way :))

Excellent. You won't regret it !
Mid-side recording with these mics is great for big wide stereo !
Anybody have any experience with the Shure Mic for mobile devices? After hearing Sheep's test videos, I'm intrigued. I had tried to record a video with my Samsung 7 the other day, but the sound was horrible. The video was adequate, or comparable to any others that I've seen but I couldn't take the sound.

I may give it a whirl. For $99.
I haven't drank the i-koolaid, so I'm limited to android.
no experience with that but I do have a Shure KSM something or other condenser that I like... they make pretty good stuff as far as I can tell, might be worth a try.
After some research, that Shure mic won't work with the Samsung. They do make a shotgun mic by Rode that will definitely work. But I'm not sure. They also make a Mic Pre from IK Multimedia that will work with any of the mics that I own. Has 48v phantom power if needed. I'll probably go that route first since it's only $40.

Tests sounded good Sheep.. I have a face for radio so I doubt I make a video any time soon.
You could always do the "Sheepy" Hollow headless horseman type video. ;D
I doubt I would ever post any videos. There is no hiding defects in your playing from the video. I like the ease of recording feature and the ability to watch for areas to improve. I think Sheep's videos are perfect, but I'm sure he can find some things that bother him.
Just a practice tool for me. I just want a little better sound for playback.
Yeah, there's a thing or two that bother me on them. Well, several things per second is more like it.
But, just to expand a bit on what else you said because I really agree --
I'm getting a lot out of it in such a short time - I feel a push toward doing something that entertains someone other than me more so than I ever did with audio alone. Not to say that I would start "entertaining" on a video or that I'm actually doing that in these videos... but I'm aware that it can't really just be a tone demo when there are also eyes listening, so to speak. It also forces me to keep going and not do 50 takes of a :15 part to get what I think I want (only to typically use the first one anyway) which I usually do to detriment of my fingers (nothing rips skin from the underside of fingernails like doing "cool riff with whole step bend" the same way 50 times in a row, ugh) - can't "start over" when it's as though someone is watching, or will be watching. This is making me want to have more structure in these jams so I at least have a sense of where I'm going even if I take a different route every time - it feels like "it counts" even though there's no risk - I don't have to upload the thing. Also, I have a desire to be concise that I never had with audio alone. A whole new perspective on what I'm doing... very helpful.
Plus, I've never had to think about "live tone" before, so there's plenty to work on there (GAS) - this room mic'ing sounds better than close cab to me but I haven't tried to mix it yet... so that could change.
So, definitely do headless vids - or vids of your foot tapping - or anything that's happening as you're playing (speaker pushing air against a candle flame... I want to try that). It's totally liberating to skip the DAW's click and just play some shit.
YouTube is storing huge amounts of video for free... might as well make use of it!
I went ahead and ordered the Rode VideoMic ME that I listed above today. I went for the easy factor. Just plug and play. I may get the Mic pre later on. I don't think this one will be as good as the iQ7, but it will be much better than the phone mic. It should do really well for the somewhat close videos that I'll be shooting.
I'll put up some kind of a test when it arrives later next week.
It's funny the little things that you can pick up on. I have this lazy habit of my palm touching the high E string with my fretting hand. Sometimes it rings a harmonic. Bugs the shit out of me.
Those sound good Sheep, and the playing...NICE!
