For those that haven't dropped in for awhile.  Mark had to upgrade because the old stuff wouldn't run on his new server OS. :)

Maybe behind bars?  :D
This is home now !

Things have been really quite around here the last couple of months though. Be nice to get some more activity going here.
Looks better than before I think. Still very little activity over there.
Yeah, I don't do much new stuff there, but I love that it's back up 'cause there's lots of good stuff stored there!
Yeah.  Its the only place toting me as the "nicest motherfucker on the planet"

I dont think my wife would agree though.
they never do.
Mark probably acted like he like the new guys only to completely turn on you later....to quickly. ;D ;D ;D

Been nice not to have all the Drama Mark created.

Truthfully the way I see it, folks on his forum started getting rude to each other and he took it to heart, and decided to bag the whole thing. I did not see any drama coming from him, only drama in reaction to the bunch of shit others were throwing around at each other. I was always thankful he had that forum up, because at one time it was very dynamic and very interesting. I have absolutely no ire at Mark for shutting it down that time, because I understood the reason why he did that. We all survived the shut down, and now it is back up as well. I go there, I come here, neither place is that lively but both hold some interest for me still.
The way I see it is he owned the WH. He could have stoped it, one way or the other without shutting it down, which was drama in itself as you see it's back up again.

If you get your feelings hurt easily, was it smart for him to jump in an argument that was heated in the first place? And if he didn't like what was going on in the argument, why add the same kinda crap to the argument himself? Then get pissed and shut down the site.....then open it back up again?

Drama Queen I say.....drama, drama, drama. ;)
Even so Hook it was a good place to go all those years, and I was glad to have that place to go, so even though I was disappointed that he had to shut it down, I was always thankful that he did make the effort and supplied the bandwidth for that forum. I let the good far outweigh the bad in this case.
The only bad thing about shutting down the WH is loosing Kev. I really liked him, and his weird ways at times. :)

I have no respect for Mark period. And some things said by Stratman about Mark were true, because I experienced them too.

The Wh was a experience I'll never forget, also my first.
Yeah Kev was a trip in itself, I always liked Randy too. I never had a single problem with Mark so I can't relate. I don't think I was too argumentative over there so I never got sideways with the moderator. I used to fight like hell on the web forums but one day I just gave up caring about what folks say, so I quit fighting, this was long before the WH, by 5 years on the old Cakewalk Newsgroups.

Man the old Cake newsgroups were at one time the most dynamic forum around, I got to rub elbows with Phil Cody (think lyricist for Neil Diamond and others) and Ted Perlman who produced some Dylan CD's and Chicago CD's. I still hang out with Cody on another private forum that descended from those old Cake Newsgroups via the Cake Forums via the Other Place, a breakaway forum from the Cake forums.

Anyways I am still feeling grateful to Mark for hosting the WH all those years, whatever the troubles were over there.
I've never had an issue with Mark either (but, then again, I'm not a thick-headed redneck either! ;D ).

I have noticed that the "off-shoot" forums have been excellent and far better than the primary forums were (Line 6, Cakewalk, etc.).
This forum is a bit different though, compared to the WH.

Most people here are in agreement on most issues, politics and religion. Over there, it was constant war. ;D But I learned way more over there while it was up than probably anywhere in my life. So for that, I'm thankful to Mark and all the people involved in the discussions. The discussions got heated at times, but that was part of it. Religion and politics are very opinion oriented subjects.

I just think back to the beating I took in Religion when I fist joined the WH. Jesus. At the time I thought it was about Religion and sorta a personal attack on me. Later, I realized it was a schooling on my thought process mostly. Now if I took all that personally, to heart or whatever, I'd been gone way back then. ;D Maybe some of it was personal. ;D ;D

And Craig, my wife and women in the past liked my think head just fine, thank you very much. ;D ;D
gents:

I met mark on the line 6 forumn pre WH.  Great guy and helpful in my deicison on a music gear purchase.

For a good pecentage of us, if it wasnt for Mark and the Bar, we wouldnt have met.  there would be no burtcave etc..
so I am extremely appreciative toward the old days and the new days.

having never personally met the guy, I consider him a friend and thats a big deal in my book.

I definetly miss Kev and even stratman.    Or maybe it was Mark calling stratman on the carpet. ;D

Mark banned Randy on a daily basis back then, it was a trip to watch that go down all those times. I was amused.
I was merely commenting on how the new forum looks, which to me is pretty bleh...

I have no issue with the WH itself, it was a great place in its time.

I did think it was beyond shoddy to leave a whole community who used the site regularly "in the dark" based on personal whim, but, hey, it's the internet, it's free, and nobody owns "community".

Word
Kev would certainly get  the post count moving.

I suspect that the weird stalker crap with FL Mason was at least part of the reason for Mark to fold up.

Finga,

Plus that was before you and I "bonded"   ;)

:-?  I haven't heard about this one.  Tell more Fingas...
I don't know/can't remember details
Only thing I can remember is it involved threats  and emails being sent to Mark's wife.

It is the sort of story that is best told at halloween :)

Seriously?  I don't remember seeing that, and Mark didn't even tell me it went that far.  Wow, that's whacked.  How did we let him get away with that, without sending in the Berts?
Who was FL Mason anyway?  I wonder if all of that happened before I joined the Hole (the whole Kliffy/J*O*E*Y thing happened before I joined).
I just checked it out at the WH
Found the thread from 4-5 years ago
Mason was impersonating Mark's wife
using a fake a email address.
Sending emails to various people rubbishing Mark etc.

FLMason was a long time  before the hole closed.  FLMason was a white guy with, it seems, very little motivation to better himself and a hefty belief that he had been wronged, who created long and detailed threads about how he was a victim of racism, and black and other ethnic people had it way easier than himself.  The threads were long and ridiculous, and in the end, FLMason took some of Mark's posts from the Hole and emailed them to Mark's customers to show what a degenerate Mark was.  My vote for biggest internet asshole I've ever seen, or at least, the one who was allowed to get away with being an asshole without being cut off at the knees for the longest period of time.
I don't remember any of this.  Did anyone ever find out who FLmason is/was? More to the point, Mark should have sued the asshole for trying to wreck his business.

Edit:  Actually, thinking about this again, how did FLmason know who Marks customers were? sounds like an inside job ?
Couple of years before, but it would be an incident that would plant the idea of closing down firmly in the mind.
Major real life hassle from something that is being run as fun.

Yeah, it probably isn't the smartest idea to run his forum as a subdirectory of his business website.  I don't know how FLMason got contact info for his customers but it was pretty disturbing.

However, many of us offered, many different times, to take over the hole, move it to a dedicated server, relocate the DNS, etc.  Mark's need to control things went far beyond the needs of the community--that's still what annoys me about the whole process.  It's not the first time a forum has outgrown its ownership... but 99/100 times the owner of that forum will offer to offload it to someone else, take donations to run it offsite, etc.  Mark was that 100th guy, and to me, stranding the community like that was uncool.

On the plus side, I don't think there had been a decent jam there in many months, and now we get them all the time.  And we have attachments.

It is what it is.
Understood - but I think Mark might have wanted to kill the site to take the content off the net.

It's all history now anyway - the cave is the place.

Charger, as to how FLMason (his name was Frank L Mason  because many of us corresponded with him at L6 before he went nuts) got info about Marks clients, if you remember, he was a computer guy.  I do remember him threatening to hack Marks site and get info.  If he actually sent something to Mark's clients, than he must have been able to pull that off.  I'm with you.  #1 all time internet douchebag.  That and the wife thing are grounds for a real live ass kicking!  >:(
I must have been asleep at the wheel, I do not remember being aware of the FLMason thing whatever it was. It probably happened during one of my vacation trips.
he went psycho, for sure.  Just didn't know he went THAT far with it!
