The Watering Hole

no, I'm not running because Ohio State lost.  We have had no power at home since Sunday afternoon and may not have it back for a couple days.  We got it back at work today, so I am in the office, but I spent all day yesterday cutting up and cleaning up tree limbs from the yard and putting shingles back on my neighbors shed.

Enjoy the break.  They are telling us we may not have power at home until next weekend.
I thought the title was referring to OSU...  ;) :D
That bites man.  We had some wind in WV, but our outages were back up pretty quick.

bummer, hope they fix it sooner than later.
Bummer, Howie.  Hope they get you fixed up soon.  Tell Craig that Ohio had more Tropical Storm Damage than this Florida boy. :D
Yep, I know what you're going through Howie.
This time we got the break.

Hang in there. :)

Randy
We got power back late yesterday afternoon so it was on by the time I got home.  The total of our damage was:

I stayed home Monday and cleaned limbs from my yard pretty much all day long.  The wind ripped my boat off the trailer and flipped it.  Since it was tied to the tongue, it stayed face down, right next to the trailer, where a tree fell on it.  However, only the middle parts of the branches hit it, the big part of the tree missed it, so it only scratched the bottom up a bit and didn't even dent it.

If you remember my hot tub cover follies from the last storm, I was prepared this time.  I put 3 concrete landscaping stones on the edge of the cover on the wind side, (yes, the same ones that got launched all the way over my house in the last storm) but this time I took a rope and tied it across the cover and tied it down to the deck it sits on. I tied it it up by the front of the wind side and snugged it down pretty tight.

It still blew it off.  But this time it went right up against the house and stayed there, so no damage.

I have two huge limbs that broke out of trees but fell onto other limbs so they didn't come down.  I'll have to climb up and cut them out this weekend.  I spent the last part of the day replacing shingles on my neighbors shed.

Parts of Cinci area are still without power, gas stations are out of gas, etc.

Here is a weird one for you though.  Last night, I went to the softball park and when I pulled in there were about 5 cars there.  I hasn't rained, so I didn't even bother to call the rainout line.  But the games were cancelled.  I asked one of our guys why, and he said that the lady who worked there said that the storm blew all the dirt off the infields and the fields were not fit to play on!  Well, at first I didn't get it.  There's only more dirt under that dirt, right?  LOL  so I look at the field closest too me, and the bases are actually sticking up 3-4 inches from the ground around them.  Now, if any of you have played softball, you'll know that usually this time late in the season, the bases are almost down below ground level because the field has been dragged so many times during the summer.  Well this was just the opposite.  The bases were sticking UP out of the dirt because so much dirt had been blown off the fields!  WEIRD!

Cool news.
Any idea what the wind speeds were by the time it hit your area?
estimates beforehand were "gusts up to 60MPH."  What we got were "sustained gusts in excess of 75 MPH."    We had 60MPH winds the last storm when my hot tub cover ended up in a tree.  This was worse.  I walked outside a couple times to move things on the deck etc, and I could lean into the wind pretty good.  Amy tried to go out and help me with the hot tub cover, and she kept losing her balance.  It was tossing her around.  Having ridden a bike for years when I was younger, I have a pretty good feel for the wind rush.  It was blowing pretty darn hard.

This is the highest winds I can ever remember having here.  Usually even when these hurricanes hit and come on upland, the Smokies, or the hills in KY usually break them up before they can hit us.  Then, there is a big buffer at the river, where there are big cliffs and a huge valley that gradually ends 20 miles north of Cinci.  This storm apparently went right over the top of all these buffers and just blasted right through here.  Things are fairly flat once you get 20 miles north of Cincinnati, and I guess this thing hit and just blasted right up through to past Columbus before it slowed down.
here's a less than cool, but interesting update.... we OFFICIALLY had a Level One Hurricane in Ohio last Sunday!    HOLY CRAP!

Yet, Dar lives 120 miles from Galveston and had no damage.... ???

And, 8 days later there are still SOME without power in Ohio...
p.s.  END OF THE WORLD!
My friend's son lives in Ohio and he was visiting when the storm hit.  He gave me some graphic idea of what it was like.

Moral of the story: Never mess with Mother Nature!
Sorry you suffered so much, Howie.

The wife, daughter and I were in Pigeon Forge (East Tennessee) celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary when Ike hit Galveston.  I usually have only broadcast channels on TV at home so I get a dose of tv news first thing in the morning and at night before bed, if not 'round dinnertime too.  With all the cable channels we never turned on local news or CNN and had no idea how bad it was.

On Saturday we went for gas and it was $4.49!  I thought it was the tourist trap in action for a few minutes before it occurred to me it might be caused by Ike.

We left on Sunday and were told by my mother-in-law we might hit the bad winds but it was already north of us in your area.  (We were listening to the Titans game up in Cinnci..)  We barely received any rain on the drive home to Nashville.  The in-laws live in Western Kentucky and were hit by strong winds that knocked a tree down on their back porch.  My father-in-law went topside to cut some limbs last Thursday and fell off the roof.  He's in rough shape in the hospital... broken wrist, ruptured spleen taken late Thursday night and he's been bleeding internally ever since.  (Even with a second surgery to try and find the bleeders on Saturday.)  Be really careful if you decide to take limbs down yourself from your roof!

Stay safe, my friend.
honestly, we didn't suffer.  Some people had trees falling through their roofs and into their living rooms.  Some are STILL without power.  Heck I didn't even miss any football!  Went to dads Sunday and Monday nights to watch the games.  So, we didn't have it that bad.

Now, your FIL, on the other hand, sounds like he IS having a hard time.  Sure hope he's ok!

Of course, that might be considered suffering considering who you root for!  ;) ;D
