I used to live in Brentwood (uk) and for all those years I never knew this place existed.  It was only declassified sometime in the 90's I think.

Above ground it's just a house, but then go through the front door and it takes you deep underground to a huge complex that could house 600 people to keep the government going etc.

We visited yesterday, fascinating.

And here's an interesting video from their website  http://youtu.be/vnCXMp7O3xo

I see they had some womenfolk pre-selected. LOL

Interesting.  I'm sure there are similar places in the US.  I do know that some of the homes built around the same time here had private bunkers in their basements.  My Brother-in-law owned a house in Zephyrhills, FL that had one of these bunkers made from solid, jolly good concrete.

I think the fears stemmed from some of the Cuban missile crisis scares near by.
For a long time the U.S. Government used the Greenbrier Resort as it's place to go in case of nuclear war.  Where better to hide a nuclear bunker than in the bottom of a 5-star resort in the mountains of West Virginia (they have since converted the bunker into a high end casino).

Maybe I spoke too quick on the conversion.

When I was designing the house I wanted to build (until the shit hit the fan), most of my fun areas, bar, music studio, etc. were going to be underground in what I was going to call a bunker.  Why?  Because you're allowed to have a bunker and the government isn't supposed to know about it which means lots of square footage that you don't have to declare for taxing.  ;)

This is half the reason the home dart bar I used to have was known as the Duck & Cover!  :D
