The Watering Hole

From my previous post, you know why I'm asking. I'd love to have a big ass dog or three, but I travel too much. So I've been thinking about getting a security system.
Anybody have suggestions here? Never looked at them before. Since I have to rely on 'County' to respond, I 'm thinking something that makes an assload of noise right off the bat. Maybe get the outdoor lights blinking too or something. Just whatever might make somebody think 'I gotta get the fuck outta here'.   Thoughts?
Maybe you could hire Barney? :D

Although I'm not exactly being helpful (my alarm system is with Brinks, but I really can't say that they are worth it - ADT is the other popular one I see), but I am curious to hear what you find out.  :)
Tie up that thing on your head outside your front door. That outta do it.  :P

How about some things to prevent someone from trying to break-in in the first place too. Fer instance, there's nothing like a full mailbox to say "I'm not home". I get someone to come by and bring it in along with the paper (I don't cancel the paper, it's a hassle plus I don't trust the paper guy. He don't need to know I'm gone which he would if I canceled regularly). I get them to feed the cat and let him in and out too. Outside is well lit and I have some bright motion sensing yard lights. I'm sure they help a lot. And no leaving answering machine messages like "Gone fishing, be back next Friday". No sense helping would be criminals fill out their calendar.

I'd like to get a security cam too just to keep an eye on that paper guy  :)
Call a local alarm/security installation company, you need an alarm system hooked via telephone line to the security center.
I've got a couple blind spots around the house which, unfortunately, also happen to be where a couple of doors in are.  If I stay here I'm definitely considering getting a couple of cameras.  That said, I'd get the low-profile ones that no one notices then get the fake ones with the red light (real cameras don't have that red light).  That way, if someone spraypaints the lens or knocks the camera down I'd still be capturing the video.  Note that you want a sharp black and white kind that can handle low light conditions, color isn't needed and is far more expensive (unless you intend to put it inside your bathroom ;) ).
mine is Louisville Slugger.  Only works when I'm home though.
Johnny.....I have an APEX security system and I quite like it.

They give you all the shit free....up to a certain point and then you have to buy the extra shit.

For free you can get the Key Pad that goes on the wall in your house, 2 key faubs to run the system via remote, door and window sensors and a motion detector sensor for the inside of the home.

You could get every window and every door hooked up to it.  They also have what they call window breaks which is basically if something is loud enough to break the window it hears the frequency or some shit like that and sets the alarm off.

We also got a fire detector system put in our house.

Every thing calls automatically and it's all wireless.

You DON'T want one attached to your regular phone line.....they could cut that cord and you'd be fucked.

The extra stuff didn't cost that much and then there is a monthly fee for the service of having them on standyby....and they fucking have had great response times.

I've come home and set of the alarm because I forgot to turn it off.....walk in the door and within seconds I have a phone call.

Once I hit the panic button and didn't realize it.  I walked in the garage and straight out the back door......the po po was at my house pretty damn fast.
Hey Matt, what does the monthly fee run you?  I'm sure mine will vary, but at least I could expect to be in the ballpark.
I can't remembe exactly how much it costs off the top of my head but I am thinking around $30 a month.  the first three months were higher because we had to get all the extra stuff we bought wrapped in.   But I think it's right at $30 a month...maybe less.
