Drums were probably programmed and there was a sound tech present there for sure, Probably Vai's sound guy. I liked that he made fun of himself in the video, he is a stellar player of course, and most of the time he does way too much, or way too strange, but once in a while he does some very nice licks, like in that video. Not too much, not too little, and not strange at all. Vai was probably behind the whole thing.
The probability that it was staged by Mr. Vai are 100% naturally, but I also thought his playing was extremely tastefully done. :)
