Hehe...  I bought a drum DVD that Terry put out when I was first trying to learn the basics.  Needless to say that was before I realized that he's just completely from another planet and can probably play something in pi over ln(e) tempo!  ;D
Terry Bozzio came to our local jazz club, the Kuumbwa, for a gig last year.  He could not fit his kit on stage.  He ended up having to leave about 1/3 of it off.  I have to say, it was beyond "nuts" and into the realm of "stupid".  Also, he used to be a great drummer, but the last time he came, I heard it was completely uninspiring and he spent a lot of time just running patterns on certain parts of the kit. Almost a "because it is there" mentality.

A good drummer needs a hi-hat, ride, kick, snare, and a tom.  Tremendous kits typically go along with tremendous assholes.
Overkill?  Neal Peart says "No way!"  ;)

Here's one of Terry's...

yeah I have heard similar about recent Bozzio performances...

I think that kit while interesting, especially since you can create chromatic and diatonic melodies with it is cool, it is by and large overkill.

In keeping with the spirit of this thread I submit a drum peice for a percussion ensemble that is a tribute to Rikki Rocket.  This was written by one of my old percussion instructors.

Here is some of that type of playing.  "Duende" off of Black Light Syndrome by Bozzio with Steve Stevens and Tony Levin.

Tony Levin is one my favorite bass players - seems like a very easy going, cool guy to know too.

Here's my favorite comment from that video though!  ;D

@jo ey - you fail; - please go die :)
Tell me about it Craig.  Love him with King Crimson and Liquied Tension Experiment.
I once played in a band with a drummer from Newark NJ. He had one rack tom, one floor tom, a snare, a kick, a hi hat, and two other symbols. He was the most melodic and tasty drummer I ever played in a band with. When he showed up with that kit I thought; geez why did someone invite this dude? but that thought went away a minute or two into the first tune.

Jimmy was his name and he was a hairdresser from North Jersey by day, and one killer rock drummer by night. He was sparse in his playing but the tastiest drummer I ever heard to this day. To play in a band with him was an inspiration that I still remember vividly some 40 years later.
The drummer as musician: Elvin Jones.  This guy could do things with a 4 or 5 piece that stagger me.  Watch this, watch how he approaches the piece from the melody of the song, then actually keeps the melody (rhythmically) of the piece going through the entire drum solo.  Understated but huge.

I saw Max Roach years ago and he did amazing things with nothing but a hat.

Terry's still rockin...Dale didn't seem to hold up so well though.
