just what the title states.  Who are your favorite male rock vocalists?  And what are your favorite male rock vocal performances.

I'll get the ball rolling with this.  Geoff Tate  on Operation Mindcrime and Empire.  IMO, two of the best mail vocal performance albums ever.

Also, ANY Boston.  The screaming Les Paul>Marshalls and the catchy tunes certainly drew me in, but their vocal harmonies were what made them special, IMO.

Lost more, but these are two of the best IMO.
Gotta agree with that Boston... there are a couple of moments on the tune "piece of mind" that are amazing... or maybe it's just that one moment...

Most of my favorite male rock vocal performance moments come from Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog--Chris Cornell--though.  The intro to "Loud Love." If I described it to you, you wouldn't get it.  There's sick vocal stuff all over that Temple of the Dog album.  And Soundgarden stuff is littered with ripping vocalisms.
no, you were right the first time.  There are at least a couple moments in "Piece of Mind."  CERTAINLY one of the best ever!

And yeah, I really dig Chris Cornell too.  I heard him once live and his voice was SHOT.  I was so disappointed I probably knocked him down a notch for the wrong reason.  But that's an almost everytime thing with LaBrie too.  Every time Dream Theater comes through it's mid to end of the tour and he can't sing MANY of the notes on the albums.  But he's not one of my favorites and not the reason I'm there to start with so it really doesn't bother me.

If I saw Boston and they couldn't do that stuff (Brads gone, so NO WAY) I'd be disappointed.  Geddy was NEVER a favorite singer, but a singer for a favorite band, and he doesn't have that range anymore either.
Tom Englund from Evergrey, "In Search of Truth" and "Recreation Day" both have alot of awesome vocal moments for me.

but have to agree with Geoff on the early QR albums.
Russell Allen of Symphony X.  In particular, the song, "Paradise Lost" from the album of the same name.
Devon Townsend.  Richard will know who this guy is.  But my first experience with him was on Steve Vai's Sex and Religion.  Which most Vai fans HATE.  I happen to love that album.  At any rate this guy has a ridiculous range and can cover about any genre of music you'd need.  He's like a modern day Freddie Mercury to me in his ability to just do crazy things.

This one won't be a popular one....but Buddy Guy.  This dude sings with conviction and soul.  I could listen to Buddy Guy sing the Telephone book and be happy.  I can just feel it when this dude sings.

I have to agree with Geoff Tate and OM album.....friggen one of my favorite all time albums.  It's just the tits from start to finish.

Israel Kamakawiwoole-Somewhere over the rainbow/What a wonderful world.....this version I don't think can be touched.  It's just killer.

The dude from Muse I think is really awesome.  Has a brilliant falcetto.

Jeff Buckley ......just because.

Kurt Nilsen (Norwegian dude) sing with others on Hallelujah and his voice was killer.

Josiah Leming- Grace Kelley, one last song

Damien Rice.....dude is just an amazing singer.  Rootless Tree, Volcano, Cannonball, Delicate, Small Crime, The Blower's Daughter...etc.  this dude is probably my fav right now.  Passionate dude....not scared to say fuck you in a love song!

Devin is awesome.  I've got his solo disk, "Synchestra".  Awesome voice.  His heavy stuff is very articulate; you can actually understand what he's screaming.  I've heard some of the guest spots he did with Aryeon and some of his Strapping Young Lad stuff.

Chris, somehow, despite all I've read that makes me think I'd like them, Symphony X has escaped me.  To my knowledge, I've never heard anything by them unless it was at Prog Palace.  I need to check them out.
Roger  Waters

David Byrne

Kenny Loggins, I dug him with Loggins and Messina and went to see him (for free of course) at the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix six months ago, and his band was excellent. The slide player got the best tone of any guitar player I have ever heard live, and of course Kenny can sing his ass off. Plus he can actually play guitar pretty well as well.

I also like Buddy Guy for de blooze. I saw him live once a long time ago with Jr Wells at a bar in New Jersey, and he made me a big fan that night.

Nicky Addeo http://www.nickyaddeo.com/ a local New Jersey singer I used to hang out with back in my early days.

I think you would like them.  Check out, "Paradise Lost" and "Odyssey" for starters.  They border on overproduced, but are excellent.  "Paradise Lost" is a lot more intense.  Considering the topic (based off of Milton's book, "Paradise Lost", it's understandable).  Of the older disks, "The Divine Wings of Trajedy" is  also a keeper.  They are definitely a little heavier than Dream Theater.

I've seen them live and they're awesome.  Michael Romeo is a guitar FIEND!!!

I've heard prog music fans who like both Symphony X and Dream Theater who think Russell Allen would, vocally, be a better match for Dream Theater.

If I think about it, I'll upload that track when I get home.
Not rock I know, but I'm going to mention him anyway....Chester Burnett (Howlin' Wolf)

One helluva voice!
Well for the semi-newer stuff, Chris Cornell is definitely top of my list. Anyone remember Micky Thomas from Starship and Elvin Bishop fame? Man, what a set of pipes! Also, you gotta love Sammy Haggar when he was with Montrose! Great 70's rock debut album. There are a few more, need some time...

Chris Cornell is probably at the top of my list of favorite rock singers ("Say Hello 2 Heaven" comes to mind)...but he'd probably be nothing without the influence of Robert Plant, who is one of my favorite and least favorite rock singers depending upon what song we're talking about.

I've always been fond of Ed Kowalczyk from Live - I've never heard a better, more consistent singer at the concert than him - he didn't miss a single note, and some of their shit is UP THERE. Incredible range, even if his vocal style has its idiosyncracies (he's an acquired taste, but one I love).

I really dig Doug Pinnick from King's X, too. Just tough and soulful, and when they all sing together, it's paradise.

He's not a rock singer, but B.B. King blew me away - his vocals were louder than the PA (and it wasn't quiet) at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville (not a small room). Just total fur-raising (goose bumps) in a good way.

I always liked Paul Rodgers and Freddie Mercury, too, but those guys are obvious. And Lou Gramm - he was great when he was young.

And Terry Kath from Chicago - he was soulful as hell. Ooh - reminds me how much I love Steven Stills, too - he's great.

There are just too many singers I adore...the human voice is such a wonderfully diverse thing.

Chris Cornell and Sammy Hagar are up there too, IMO.
Maynard James Keenan also.  Holy crap.  On the albums he blows shit away, so I was not expecting him to be able to do that kind of shit live, but he is insanely spot-on live.
Ed Kowalczyk from Live - I forgot about these guys, awesome vox! Also, STP! I saw them in San Antonio and Scott Weiland was fookin the shiznat!

I knew I forgot one - he is amazing live. Thanks for bringing that one up, Charger.

Hell yeah...all 3 of those kick ass!

Also, Billy Gibbons/ZZ-Top
The guy from Thin Lizzy
Robin Trower's old singer before he died.

Hell, Jimi Hendrix was a good singer!  ;D

Bob Seger

Damn, too many to list.

David Draiman (Disturbed)
Doug Pinnick (Kings X)
Paul Rogers
Dave Coverdale
Pat Travers.

The first two might come as a suprise given my usual choise of musical style.   ;D

For me, the  first 4 or 5 albums were the best. The rest was good, but only just.

Spud.
Agree about Robert Plant- when he is good he is the iconic rock singer - when bad well he is ..... a bit Jimmy Page like :)

Stratman - guy out of thin lizzy - Phil Lynott man - he is still the most famous black Irish man.

Yeah I like his vocals as well - soulful

my favourite vocal from him - reminds me of a summer when I was a kid.

Obvious or not - Mercury stands out on his own - brilliant.

I think recorded at least - Thom Yorke has the best voice for me at the moment.
A bit ropey live - not sure that Radiohead counts as Rock either.

But it changes all the time for me.

Yeah, Thom Yorke.  Fantastic.  It's hard to place them in rock, they kind of fill a whole genre called "Radiohead". But Thom Yorke is a brilliant singer with a fantastic voice... and they are, in my mind, some of the best musicians around.

I guess I should mention Bono too, his voice just kills me.
my list is long of course ....

but Brad Delp was the most under rated vocalist in rock n roll history  ( in my opinion)

Greatest rock n roll singer on the planet and now including heaven.  bar non, end of discussion

I agree with charger
Kenny Loggins on the Loggins and Messina On Stage album doing the Winny The Pooh song.

That guy is one smokin singer.
