Yeah, you heard me. I know, i know. I mention something like this about once a year. But i happen to be watching "live at Ronnie Scott's" again. Let me be clear here. I dont care what your style preferences are. I dont care what style impresses you most. If you can watch just the first four songs of this DVD and not be completely blown away... Not think he is one of the absolute masters of the instrument... Then you need to contact at least a doctor, a physhiatrist, and God, because the devil has stolen your soul! Hahahaha
Unfreaking believable!!!!! I think Jeff may even top Jimi for OWNING the guitar! And i will say this again. You HAVE to see Jeff play to "get it." See him play a song, and you'll be able to fully appreciate it when you hear it on the cd next time. It has to be seen to be believed!
Well, I'm not going to go overboard on this, but I will agree: You have to watch this DVD to really be impressed! (Plus Tal's on it too! :D )
Jeff Beck just bores me, i've never been able to get excited by his playing, a bit of a yawn !
I've seen this. Never been a huge Beck fan....but it IS a damn fine show. So good it's sat on my DVR for a over a year and it's the only concert that I've kept in that time. It's that damn good.

I can't emphasize enough that you have to CAREFULLY WATCH Jeff Beck play before you can really appreciate him. Then when you hear the CD later, it's uber cool because you know how he does it. But if you just listen to CDs and don't SEE how he absolutely OWNS and is the master of, that guitar, you just can't "get it."
He will be picking with his thumb, have his pinky on the volume control, his index finger on the vibrato bar, and be doing all three things at once to shape notes. It's just incredible. Or watch him play "where were you" on that video or any other, where you can see him play one note, then bend the bar to the next 5 or more notes without moving the fretted note. And hit them all in tune!
The thing I got the biggest kick of, is that it's SO easy to get caught up in what he does and assume he can't play fast or what we'd normally consider difficult riffs. But maybe once or twice in every show I've see, he will do something both fast and a difficult, progressive type riff. Almost like it's just to show you that he can do it.
Watch the hands. Watch BOTH the hands!!! (His RIGHT hand is where his mastery is! That control of 2-3 things at once that I mentioned before, is what sets him apart.) Find vids you can see closeups of them to see what he's doing. He is THE MASTER. Like Jimi, NOBODY can do what Beck does anywhere close to as well as he does it.
I'll say this again as well. If you don't look for the right things, it might NOT appear that fancy, or flashy. He doesn't play blazing riffs all over the neck like Yngwie. In fact, I think that's why most guys who aren't blown away by him aren't. They look at his left hand and aren't impressed. Watch the right hand for a while and see TOTAL CONTROL AND OWNERSHIP of the guitar.
Your mileage may vary due to driving conditions, weather, terrain, and the mother-in-law in the back seat.
Thats such a subjective subject. I couldn't come close to Beck, but I wouldn't want too. So, it's hard to be impressed with the ability he has when you don't like the outcome of his efforts. I think the music is way important along with the outcome.
I use to think EC was God because I like his music, for example. Now, I respect what he's been able to do and like to listen to a few tracks now and then but SRV is the king of guitar hands down, including the music/songs he played.
I think there is a difference in talented/ ability, and gifted. To me, SRV was gifted. He'll never have a person compete, imo.

Yes I know all of that, and have seen him perform, (don't forget he has been around on the British scene for decades) but I still don't like his style of playing or his music so it really doesn't matter how much you write on the subject, it isn't for me.

Well Howie I have to agree Jeff Beck is a great player, I watched that video several times, and I agree his is wonderful, but he don't displace my all time favorite Roy Buchanan in my mind, check out the guitar work this tune by Roy on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FQhwc3OLqI
Beck is a master but he don't even come close to Roy's melodic sense. Beck bends too far or not enough, and he is out of key in that way slightly. I agree for what he does and how he does it he is a master of the Stratocaster, and one of my all time favorites, but not my very favorite.
I saw Roy twice live, once in a small venue in Wildwood NJ. That night I went down there with two recent graduates of Berkelee School Of Music and he stunned us to silence, we drove home about 2 hours on the Garden State Parkway in my pops pickup truck, and no one said a word, just silence till we got to the New Gretna Toll Booth, and someone let out a phwew. That is how impressive he was early on. Stunning two highly educated musicians (and me) to silence is something no one else ever did in my presence.
By the way Jeff Beck used my Stratocaster in a concert one night with John McLaughlin early on in McLaughlin's famous part of his career. I lent it to someone, and he was part of the opening act, and when he brought it back to me, he told me the story. My kiddo still has that strat. I never lent any of my instruments to another person after that story. I was a bit miffed at the guy but it is water under the bridge.
Jon, wasn't trying to change your mind, just explaining why I feel he is so great. I think we are many times (not always) impressed the most by the things we see guys do that we "can't" do. I used to see guys play fast and I could play fast so it impressed me but I would always think in the back of my mind "I can do that." I haven't spent hours trying to master what Beck does so well, but I CAN NOT do it. So it fascinates me to watch him play slow and be doing something I can't do.
I have seen him live twice. Mentioned this before here, but I saw Jeff headline and SRV opened for him on my birthday one year (around 86 I think) in Dayton. Big place (Hara Arena seats 10K or so, but we were about 10 rows from stage and I could see everything he did clearly. I've always been blown away by him since then.

Yes, i know what you mean about his technique. He is very good at what he does, it's just that for me I get no enjoyment from what he does, just not a fan of that style, I find it boring to say the least. Technique alone doesn't do it for me. My favourite stuff is played by some of the worst technical players there are, but the sound they make and the expression that goes into that sound is what does it for me.

I listen to a bunch of blues music. I don't think technical is a term that applies in that category whatsoever. ;D
Sheep, thanks for putting up those videos of Henderson. Very interesting. I've heard some of his stuff before but it was never wilder stuff like that. I'm really digging that. And... parts of that remind me of your playing!
Hook, blues are VERY Technical. What you do is, take all of the "technical" you can and make sure you don't use ANY of it when you play. LOL

Not being mean at all, really. But that's just horrible to me. Not worth my time watching it, kinda horrible. Sorry, just my opinion, so no big deal. :)
This is just one of many. Check this out. The way he dresses, the character..... the playing is just off the chart, he's the entire package. Nothing like it him in the world. IMO.
