Not the greatest guitar player? Not flashy, for sure, but he's a PHENOMENAL guitar player.

I hate that "Say What You Mean To Say" song, though...irritating.

Mayer writes some real dogs that seem to connect with people. It bugs me that people like shit like "Your Body Is A Wonderland" when he's written much cooler songs than that piece of tripe.

I'm a cranky bitch these days, aren't I?

I agree.  John Mayer is a sick fucking player.  Not only does he have some real chops, but he has real taste.  That "say" song would bug me too, if it wasn't for that great fucking snare pattern.

I just suggested that he may not be the greatest guitar player. I think he's better than most. But not a SRV, for sure. I think Dave Mathews is damn good to, I'm just not crazy about his music, or nasal voice.

That snare pattern is pretty cool, actually - there are definitely things to like about just about everything he's done - for instance, I LOVE the jazzy, pseudo-Wes Montgomery breakdown part in Your Body Is A Wonderland...I just can't get past those dreadful lyrics and breathy-vocal chorus. I feel like my testosterone levels sink just listening to it.

On a lot of his songs, and especially Say What You Mean To Say (or whatever it's called), I just get tired of the repetitive vocals - I get tired of that in MANY songs (not just Mayer's).

I will say, though, Hook, Mayer might not be a "greatest of all time" sort of player, but he's one of the best out there right now. He and Derek Trucks regularly do things that make my head spin. Just such touch, taste, and feel...it's a pleasure to listen to them play guitar.

I agree! :)
It's interesting that you can here all the influences in John Mayer's playing. Hendrix, Clapton, SRV and many more but then he goes beyond that into what is basically his own style. He is a consummate musician. I can sit and watch "In The Light" all day. He makes an interesting comment at one point where he says that he can here himself reproducing old licks he has heard before, I think he mentions Freddy King, when he is striving to be original.
