The Watering Hole

Listening to Music

As I mentioned in the Deep Purple topic, I was checking out some free Comcast On Demand concert segments last night.  The first one I picked to watch was a Yes segment (Owner of a Lonely Heart and Roundabout) and paid special attention to Howe's playing.  Then, purely by chance, I happened to choose a segment by Asia (Wildest Dreams and Heat of the Moment).  As soon as it started I went "Hey!  That's Steve Howe playing again!"  A little Google work and I discovered for the first time that Steve had been in both bands.  I never knew that he was is Asia before!

It seemed a bit Twilight Zone-ish that I found this out in this manner.  :o

Even more uncanny is this picture

Holy Crap, Craig!  Where the heck have you been?
Out in the field...  ;)

seriously though.  This wouldn't surprise me if you were a youngster or something, but Asia got major press as the next "Supergroup" at the time, given where the members came from.  While I thought their albums had some moments, I never thought they came anywhere near their potential.  In fact, I felt they got so much press as the next supergroup, that they went a little too "pop" with the music to try to appeal to a broader audience.  The stuff they did that was more classic/prog rock was really good.

Anyway, the first album was VERY popular, and I think it is is pretty wild that you went this long without knowing it was Steve Howe playing guitar, given that I know you had to hear some of their songs hundreds of times over the years.

It's ok to spend all your time in the fields with the sheep.  Just make sure you take your Ipod!   ;D
Let me put it this way.  I listened to LOTS of music when I was younger but, unlike many, I couldn't care less who was in what group back then (still don't to a degree).  In fact, I'm the same way with movies.

I just thought it was pretty wild that I just happened to pick two concert segments to watch in sequence, and they both had the same guitarist.
it is strange how you finally found out.

I saw Asia again last year.  They were great live.
