Listening to Music
38 posts
Among many non-Howie approved selections ( ;D ), I've been listening to some old stuff like Whitesnake and Steelheart, but Threshold was a new one for me.  Sort of a modern, progressive metal.  Me likey!  :)

(Naturally, I couldn't find the album I wanted to post on YouBoob, but they do have a bunch - here's a few.)

Not bad!! Needed something new to listen to.

I have been all over the map as far as genres go. I was at a Newgrass / Americana festival a couple of weeks ago and saw Panic! At the disco and Weezer Saturday at Summerfest. My 18 yo daughter instigated that. She slept to indietronic during the four hour drive home after. It was kinda surreal by 3:00 am.  ;D
Just lately I've got into Johnny Cash.  I can't believe I missed his career entirely, was just never on my Radar, but Man I'm into it now. Like being re-born
I get on kicks where I'll listen to older country music.  I listened to a Buck Owens greatest hits compo recently.  Burn, Burn, Burn .... Jon! ;D
Johnny Cash?  ;D

No, really.... I've been diggin him too lately. I kinda am passed him and into Willy Nelson a little bit now. Speaking of them, it reminds me.... listen to some Jerry Reed. Yes, from the movie smokey and the bandit. that motherfucker can play the shit out of a guitar. In fact, I'm going to listen to him now.  :)
Avenged Sevenfold today. Hail to the King. Need some chug and melodic harmony leads, the coffee alone isn't cutting it.
Stumbled on this in a search for some new tunes.

just clicked on Greenleaf... oh man, I'm liking this... !

vocals started... not liking as much... sigh. effin' vocals.

lol.. of course! they're from SWEDEN.

rock. on.
Got half-a-dozen albums from Greenleaf.

Been listening to the discography of Bill Nelson (of BeBop Deluxe).  "Only" 93 albums...  :o :)
I've been listening to a lot of Buckethead. Since 2013 Buckethead has released about 220 albums... and from what I can tell from youtube, they're all pretty listenable.  Basically he just has ideas, records them, and then releases it. Here are two albums with completely different aesthetics.  It's kinda fun just to trip through someone's guitar mind.

For example, here's Kaleidoscalp.

Here's Bermuda Triangle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOheIpjspO0
That's some different stuff. LOL  I had never listened to much from him.  I listened to most of Kaleidoscalp while I wiki'd some of his history and discog.  I decided to jump ahead and peek at some of the more recent stuff.

I'm diggin' this newer, first from 2016.

That's rad. It sounds like just one guitar... can't even tell if there's any bass. But there's just something about buckethead's playing that I really dig.

The contrast from track 3 to track 4 is just sick.  I may be hooked.  Thanks!  LOL
Just discovered a band named "Riverside". Great sense of melody. I'm not able to "categorize" them (rock, progressive rock, pop...) but I love their music. :)

Here a sample: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym_HP88McHw

Ciao
I've got several of their albums - all good!

I just bought Djam Karet's latest (Swamp of Dreams - the full album isn't on YouBoob yet... https://youtu.be/c3wd_bdju_E) and Say from Cairo (featuring Rob Cottingham from Touchstone).  Another one not on YouBoob yet, just one song: https://youtu.be/ZgELlG_VTVg...

Heard a song as a backing track, did a SoundHound on it and found that the band (Pocketknife) is local.  Got their Dying To Pretend album and like it!  You can hear the entire thing from their Bandcamp site: https://pocketknife.bandcamp.com/album/dying-to-pretend

I'm so happy to be working again because it means I can feed my addiction of getting new music and supporting bands of friend's!  :D
Happy to hear that you're back to work!  :)

I rally enjoyed listening to Cairo, thanks !

I'm having a "snap-back" from trying to finish going through Bill Nelson's discography (I'm up to 2011 - dozens of albums done, many still to listen to!) and from listening to David Arkenstone (New Age).

Although I'm no fan of Cookie Monster vocals, I can't stop listening to this:

https://youtu.be/I3nnuTiuxuk

Nothing like some Industrial metal from Finland to wake you up - LOL!   ;D
Great bicycle riding tunes.  LOL.   Probably shouldn't mix with coffee.

Reminds me I need to get back to my daily bike rides.

Edit:  Alright, I'm going old school on you.  I haven't listened to this in many, many years.  Was my first Priest album.  At the time I thought it was the heaviest.  It's interesting to hear it now.  It is pretty heavy.

You guys have probably already heard this.  I listened to it yesterday in the shop.  I'm not usually a pure guitar album listener ( maybe I'm evolving) but this I liked.  I think it's a good listen.  His newest Sept. 2016

d'oh! a new Timmons album?!?! cool, thanks DM!

Well, that could be the first polish band I've spun.   I like the strings in the song "Ritual".  The singing reminded me of some old Bowie stuff.  I'll check out more.  I listened to about half of the "Pills" album.

I stumbled on this earlier today.

Graham Bonnet Band - The Book (2016 Full Album) (2CD) (320Kbps) - YouTube

I gave it a spin because I loved his vocals on an old Michael Schenker Group album.  I like what I've heard of it.  Decent melodic rock.  I like the guitar in this.

Edit :  I finished listening to the rest this afternoon.  Seems the second CD portion of this is remakes of his hits with Rainbow, Schenker, Alcatrazz, etc.  He has a pretty lengthy resume.  I liked it.  New band is good.  Worth a listen I think. :P
This guy. Fantastic player

I've been listening to ALL the Eloy albums lately - love 'em!  :)

I'd give my left nut to play like that too!

(SHIT!  I'm running out of nuts! ;D )

Not sure how those people could walk away, I was glued and mesmerized for the whole song.  No clams, great tone & feel plus an excellent choice of song.
I bought the new Iced Earth album.  I like it, but I'm a fan.  Here is some of it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3TswYcDnVo

Here are some clips from the new Blind Guardian live album.  I bought the album, I'm a fan.  I saw them last year.  Their lead guitar player has got it going on.  I was impressed, but that doesn't take much.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4TorvOfBWE

And here is a new album that I dig that I stumbled on today.  It'll kill about an hour. :D

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FR1whP2G06s
Nice!  I was behind on both by a few years and will check out the new one later.

https://youtu.be/1SiZiXPa3_k

Saw this one in the list to the right and decided to click on it - pretty good so far!

Just what I need, MORE new music!  Pretty much all my spend-on-me money has been going to music lately (I don't watch TV, haven't been buying drinks, no movies, etc.).  Now if I could just get it all imported into my media player...  I've got more than half in, but still have a LOT to do (well over 100,000 songs)!  :)
Yep.  I like the Genre.  I'll check that one out.  I always dig in this stuff when I'm looking for new tunes.  Here's one from a band that has been posted here before.  I think Ironsheep served 'em up first a few years back.  This is a brand new one from them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPUiuGqxws8

I have this guys page in my web favorites.  He has regular new albums that are usually worth a listen.

https://www.youtube.com/user/StonedMeadowOfDoom93/videos
Went to Electric Octopus' Bandcamp page ( https://electricoctopusofficial.bandcamp.com/ ) and picked up two of their newest albums (including the one I linked to).

You can literally buy most of their stuff for download for next to nothing (if you want to be a cheap loser - lol).  They say "name your price," but I generally give about what a CD costs to support the bands.

I'll probably get a few more from them once payday rolls around again (first week of August).

Snarky Puppy, "What about me". Ridiculous. watch the whole way through, the freeform guitar solo is amazing, and the drummer just keeps upping the intensity level.
Oh yeah!  Snarky Puppy is always a lot of fun.  :)

I just bought the album below created by one of the members of another forum I'm in a lot.  Love it!  He's got another in the works - can't wait.

https://dieschwarzenladas.bandcamp.com/
Just bought this one too.  A lot of people are saying there's no decent music coming out now.  They're just looking in the wrong places!  :)

Some new quality Prog!

https://youtu.be/2Hn7Vh71zbs
Here's a guy I stumbled on on a PBS Blues Award show.  I thought He was worth checking out.  Pretty good guitar player.  Great sound.  2017 album.  You guys may know of him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1Mg0aYiQns

Here's a place I bought a remastered Big Bill Broonzy album and a Dave Van Ronk album.   Some Interesting stuff there.  Lots of different genres.  You just have to search around.

https://folkways.si.edu/
I now have all four Wobbler albums (all very good!) and I just got this guys album:

https://youtu.be/85lDcMIwBJ4

Some really decent Prog coming out lately!  :)
This is a band I just totally fucking missed.  Had never heard them until I saw them live the other night opening for Black Label Society.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENhk9xq1fA4

I have been digging them since.  They have a new album out just mid January.  I bought it right after the show.  The link is an older album that I think smokes.

BLS has a new album out as well.  It's very good if you like Zakk Wylde.  It has a goofy name of Grimmest Hits.  Makes you think it's a greatest hits, but it's all new material.  He put on a great show.  I had never seen him live and thought it worth the coin.  2000 people SRO show in an open air Bar/venue.  Great Stuff!  It was worth discovering C.O.C.  who I had just brain farted.

A band from Craig's neck of the woods opened the show.  Red Fang.  They fucking rocked for about 45 minutes.  Very good band.

Yeah, I know, heavy shit, but I still dig it.  In the pic, I'm standing right in front of ZW, second row. The pic was from his page.

Humble Pie live ‘73 album, fantastic stuff - listening to that a lot recently
