Making Music
8 posts
After many years of laying mostly dormant musically, I'm back.....I think  ;D

As you may know,  my Son, Oliver (20)  has developed into a very good drummer over the years and is near completion of grade 8 Trinity College London (highest grade in the syllabus).  He is also a pretty tasty bass player.

So onto our cover song. Yesterday (Sunday) he laid down the drums and then added the bass to the rap song Skandalouz - He doesn't usually like this sort of stuff but he does like this song. He then decided to put vocals on it for a laugh and then asked me if I could put some guitars on it.  So, this all took about an hour to put together the result is our own styled version of this song.

Drums: Roland V Drums
BASS:  Squire of some sort
Guitar: Gibson Les Paul
Amp:   Helix
All recorded with Reaper.

Also, if you would like to see some examples of Oliver drumming along to some stuff take a look at the following videos.

This is running directly from my server so it may slow down a bit depending on how many people look at it at the same time etc.

comments good or bad, all welcome  :)

ps:  If you need a drum track for something you are working on (or just noodling away at) , send over the track with click bass and drums as an MP3 and I will ask Oliver to play drums on it and send you back the stems.

Damn!  He sounds far better than most (c)Rap singers I've ever heard!  Sounds like more fun from the Gil household.  :)

Have you ever shown him this video of you?  Definitely my favorite!   ;D

Yes, he has seen that.  An instant classic  ;D
I've gotten so used to social media that I actually wanted to "like" this and I realized I'd have to actually post a note.

So glad you're able to make music with your kid, Jon - it's really inspiring and brings me a great deal of joy. My little baby Seamus just turned 5 months today, and he's already staring at me when I play guitar or sing to him with "that look" - which I feel like only kids who end up musicians have - my other two older kids never had that look, but this little man does, and I am going to start him on musical training early just so he's still in "language sponge" mode and can read music before it becomes a challenge to learn (like it has been for me).

I hope all is well with you in the UK. :)

Thanks Brian. It teally is great fun playing music with your kids, especially when they actually like your guitar playing and really enjoy playing with you. Just wish I had kids younger.  Oliver is 20 and I’m 57 now! How the fuck did that happen. I blinked and I got old !  :o.

I started Oliver on guitar lessons at a local music academy when he was 4 years old. Great thing to do as it put him on a musical path. He switched to drum only 4 years ago and he just took to it immediately and can now play any style extremely well.  He still plqys guitar and 3 months ago got interested in bass and he has such great rythmn it seems effortless to him.

I have been looking all my life for a great drummer to play with, but it seems the best thing is if you can’t find a good drummer....grow you own like I did

Good luck with your youngest and musical future !
Sounds pretty good, not familiar with the song, but it's fun. As for the videos, you should stick them on YouTube. On the US west coast, they stutter like CCTV footage.
Yeah, I wasn't familiar with the song either, I just winged it for 1st take on rhythmn guitar and the solos and it sort of worked.

Can't put them on youtube. Everytime we try they get blocked immediately by youtube as copyright hits.  No idea how other people get away with it, so the the only option was to host it myself.  The connection is 100mbit so should be ok but depends on how many other people are looking at it at the same time.

Thanks
Just removed the backing vocals from the mix as they were cluttering things up a bit. Same link as before
