Might knock off early today :-)

Awesome! Congrats. 8-)
We don't even need to ask - you will give us clips and I'm looking forward to them, especially any meaty stuff.

excellent... the axe forum is a great guide. how are you planing on amplifying it???
DreamTheaterRules#7 · Jun 03, 2010 18:12 UTC
Congrats Jon. I think you will dig it a lot!
fingers#8 · Jun 03, 2010 20:45 UTC
At last one one of the clip monsters has got one :)
The fx are obviously fantastic. But for me it will be more interesting to see what you make of it raw amp compared to real amp recording.
The digital gunk that doesn't survive after the honeymoon.
Jon_G#9 · Jun 04, 2010 08:30 UTC
first impressions ....my ears are fried...i need to assess more before I post a clip.
The touch sensitivity of all the amp models is incredible, really is like playing a real amp. Not 100% sure about the cabs yet but I can load up my own Ir's so will also give that a go.
Lovely control when backing off the guitar volume pot and some reallly monster sounds in this thing.
I think I will get a power amp and guitar speaker cab for playing out (which I still do now and then)
I think it's a keeper. Ut I just need to find my own sound in it.
As ever, the stock patches mostly suck, but that's a given as we all like our "own" thing
Clips coming soon
Jon_G#10 · Jun 04, 2010 08:34 UTC
Oh yes, it came with a complimentary box of german chocolates that I can't eat as I am diabetic....still rhonda and oliver soon made light work of those!
CraigB#11 · Jun 04, 2010 09:41 UTC
I stayed out of the Axe FX discussions, but is this the type of preamp that you should use something like a PA with? In other words, with an amp that doesn't color the sound if possible? Or, like with the POD's, does it sound even better with an amp that adds a little color (like the VHT 2/50/2's did)?
Jon_G#12 · Jun 04, 2010 09:47 UTC
Can be used with cabs and powereamp sims either o. Or off so can be used with either pa speakers or real guitar cabs but still using a standard poweramp instead of a guitar amp
Kabala#13 · Jun 04, 2010 10:53 UTC
Supposedly Steve Vai is endorsing the Axe FX now...that can be a good or bad thing, he's never been considered a great tone-meister, though I do think he's had some great moments....that live in Astoria DVD, it definitely has some great, raw, woody amp tones here and there (IMO).
dearthian#14 · Jun 04, 2010 13:27 UTC
John Petrucci is on-board also. I wonder how he works it into an already complicated rig (I think you'd have to be a traffic director to figure his rig out).
Steve, I think, has a unique tone. I dig him.
Glad you're digging it Jon. Can't wait for clips.

IMO sounds best with a FRFR setup. also sounds great as an effects device in the loop of an amp(tried it with my hot rod deluxe). ive never tried it through a power amp and into a cab, a lot ppl like that option. its pretty hard to make it sound bad.

That's excellent. Just downloaded the patch. I will have to get a usb to midi converter. Funny I thought the axe fx had a usb port for data transfer etc, but nope, just midi connectors, which is understandable I suppose as it is the industry standard for connecting musical instruments etc.
I'll get a connector tomorrow and try this patch. I also want to try some of my own cabs too.

yeah that is a downfall.. before you buy a device make sure its compatible.. the axe is finicky. i had to grab a maudio usb uno because my old delta 1010lt and my new maya wouldnt work the axefx

Actually Dweezil has been a ripper for a long time. I remember getting a Guitar Player magazine with one of those little floppy records in it from him, probably 20 years ago. He's a far more skilled guitarist than Frank, he's nearer to that Vai/Satriani ecehlon. But of course, could never write music at anywhere near the insane level at which Frank wrote.

i had all of dweezils stuff on cassette he has some chops but to be able to recreate his dads stiff is no joke.. he said he worked hard to master his dad's stuff.. using economy picking.. etc.. frank was an insane composer who played guitar.

Got a usb to midi converter today and I must say using the software editor really opens up another universe entirely.
I've worked out how to upload my own cabs, but the software to convert my own cabs (wavs) to sysx data is not working properly yet (probably me doing something wrong).
Anyway, no "guitar" tests yet, but here's a little play around with the violin patch and then another "standard" patch.
I will post some guitar tests next week once I am completely familiar with the unit.
simply incredible.

do you use a guitar cab or a full range cab?

the following is one of the stock patches in the unit. It doesn't really "show off" the full potential of this thing by any means but I just love this sound....others may not of course but there you go !
anyway, here's a little taster. This is the "master of muppets" patch.

I just created an IR cab with a room mic only, eg condenser mic 3 metres away from the speaker cab and to the side so as to not get any direct sound from the speaker to try and capture that "in the room" sound that you experience when you stand next to the amp that you play.
This is by no means a finished cab project but by shooting many more IR's in different room positions I think I should be able to nail the sound that I am after, which is basically a "live" in the room sound.
So, I loaded this cab up into the Axe FX and did some clean tone noodling...what do you think?

I am not loving the reverb on that... it's distracting. That can't be the reverb from the room? Can I hear it dry?
Also, try sticking the mic down at floor level.
Jon_G#42 · Jun 07, 2010 19:00 UTC
Charger: I will have another try in a bit as that was a single shot with the reverb from the axe fx too. I'll do a completely dry take in 30 minutes or so.
The amp model was the brown model, but I set everything really clean and just added a touch of compression at the front of the amp.

Good lord... That pretty much sold me on the Axe-FX. Getting one now for sure. Anyone know if this effect is only on the Ultra?
Jon_G#47 · Jun 12, 2010 06:58 UTC
The standard amp and cab patches are not that good really, but when you create your own rig with it then there are some truly exceptional sounds in it. I think the violin patch only works in the ultra (i think)
I need to spend some time with theredwirez cabs as they are better than the stock ones in the unit for sure
Jon_G#48 · Jun 12, 2010 13:37 UTC
here's another go at trying to create a "cab in a room"
I shot 3 IR's from various positions to capture the "cab in a room" of the peavey C30 and then created a stereo cabinet from these in the AxeFX
This is by no means right yet as it has some "clangy" sounds in the upper registers, mostly due to the way I captured the IR's. Need to play around with eq on the amp when recording the IR's to avoid the high end clangers, but not bad for a first attempt I think. (also the guitar needs a setup, action is a bit too low hence the clangers ! )
So, this is completely dry, any room effect you hear is the stereo cab IR's only, no other processing. The amp model is the plexi2

u need the ultra for the violin patch.
Jon_G#50 · Jun 15, 2010 20:40 UTC
Here's a 4 minute (boring) wank just to demonstrate the dynamic range of this thing simply by rolling back the guitar volume controls
The "sound" is an "in progress" patch that I am building using my own IR cabs shot from the classic 30 at various distances from the cabinet. This is a mixture of 3 of those IR's to give a stereo "room" cab, with some reverb added too in Axe fx
by the way, the rough full on distortion is not the axefx, it's my fault as I had a compressor on the guitar track in protools and I only just noticed it after I did the mix down and it was set to hard limiting, hence the over cooked sound....couldn't be bothered to bounce it again ...doh!
