The Watering Hole

Hey, not sure on this one so I wanted some other input besides mine...and I don't need much of it, just a simple "that sounds like ass" or not will work!  :D

Usually when doubling crunchy rhythm tracks I use one amp and just change a few settings or whatever but figured I'd give mixing two different amps a go for a little fun this time (fairly common practice I know but never got around to trying it myself). What I wan't is to have these two amps play nicely together for this kind of thing.   

Might seem a little light in the low end but I was thinking more in terms of 'in a full mix' here. It's also kind of an 80's vibe, wasn't the goal but that's sorta what it feels like to me. Quick Rod on the right, 5150 III on the left.

Blending Test

Two words:

Kics Ass!

they go together quite well. 5150 stood out maybe a little (left), but not really.

I'm kinda surprised that they sound that similar, tbh. pretty cool.

The 5150 is a little more scooped sounding by default and the QR more upper middy, that's why I figured they'd blend ok. I do need the mid knob on the 5150 cranked way up there (2:00) to get it in the ballpark with the Splawn, but it does get there! The 5150 III on channel 2 is really tight and punchy, dare I say it, modern Plexi-ish. The QR on its '1st gear' channel is super tight/dry, punchy and plexi-ish. Guess I like that sound. :)

Sounded good to me amigo. Like the 80's metal sound is also what I thought when listening.

The two sounds are beautifully matched and the result is amazing !!

Thanks dbm, marco! Shouldn't say the unthinkable but I do think I've finally found that second 'keeper' amp.  8-)

Since the doubling test got some thumbs up (:D) I took it a step further and tried the same tones in a short full mix because that was the idea to begin with. Doesn't sound as beefy but then those were mostly open position chords (A, G, D) and these are different and further up on the neck. Everything here was done the same, same amps, settings and pans, guitar, mics, etc. I doubled the 5150 III clean channel as well, it's at the start and comes in again at 0:36. I wanted to hear that channel in a mix because I haven't really messed with it yet. Not loving it though, a little boxy sounding (an easy fix...I have the gain and mids really high, was trying to get a ratty clean sound I guess). It's a nice contrast to the dual amp'd rhythm part though, but otherwise I think I'd tweak the settings and try again next time. I also tossed in a little lead doodle at the start just for a goof, might as well sample everything while I'm at it.

This was truly a one hour rush job so the mix could use some balancing - but it does the job for tone testing...

Sounds great in the mix too !
The two rhythm guitars are awesome, while the lead part sounds a bit too "dark" if compared with them...but it's just my taste.. ;)
