I really intensely dislike playing to a click track as there is no way to express time stretching, unless you program that into the click track, but that wouldn't work for me as I like to play as I feel it, as it comes, which is great when I play with real musicians as the "nod and a wink" works really well so that everyone knows where everyone else is going and when to easy off and when to power on etc. However, I don't play with real musicians that often any more and therefore I've been thinking about getting an electronic drum kit  that I can hook up to my superior vst.  I can "get by" with drums and then of course go back and edit everything to fit properly after.

Do any of you guys have experience of electronic kits and are there any that you would recommend, or even a hand tapping device would be good so that I could add the drums at my own pace rather than being dictated to by a machine ?
I understand what you mean, Jon.
Playin' in band you can hear the others and then follow them, but when you play alone (IMO) there is only the click.
Not a big problem for me as I'm able to go "out of timing" with the perfect click too ! :-)

I've had a Boss DR-something some times ago and it was not bad. Good sampled drums (5 or 6 drum kits), midi sync and I was free to
play the drum by hands tapping on the pads. The bad thing was that there were no dynamics on the pads.

If you already own an iPhone, there're a lot of drum apps where you can play the drum with your fingers !  Why not ?
Some of those apps are really really good and sensible to the dynamics !

Ciao !

One thing you can do is to hand tap the tempo track after against something you played without a click.
Then use that tempo track as the click  you are in bars and beats and can use loops against your human timing.

I've done it a few times and it works.

I bought one of these a few years ago
Interesing vid - I basically did fuck all with it

On the tempo thing here's an extreme tempo test jam I did all played unclicked to see how a hand tapped tempo after would work matching loops from S2.

That's a good idea, tapping the click track to something you have already played, I will have a go at that. That trigger pad looked interesting too.

I rembered I did FNJ based on a hand tapped drum using the Korg non clicked.

Just hunted it down.
