Thanks Paul. It's the DrZ amp and corresponding cabinet.
The signal chain is: Les Paul (single coil tap) > HD500 Colorsound fuzz with distortion turned completely off but oupt set 100% > DrZ amp with drive set around 20% so the amp is very clean. No reverb at all. All reverb was added in reaper at mix-down. The drums also makes a big difference. Instead of just boring loop I mixed up the patterns a bit (superior 2)
I also use a metal pick (always have) hence some chirpyness on the higher notes. A mate of mine made me a batch of metal picks about 25 years ago and I still have them all now. Two reasons I prefer a metal pick, (1) doesn't bend, (2) gives a nice crunchy attack on the strings)
The main problem that I have always had when dialing in tones (even on a real amp) is that I always tend to push the treble too far so I was mindful of that on this test and purposely backed off the treble on the amp quite a bit.
I will try the HD500 into the power amp of the Peavey C30 later today and record that (without HD cabs of course) as there is still something not right with the line6 cabs that I just don't like. Mostly probably just down to choice as to the position of the mic, plus of course I tend to like a bit more of a roomy sound to capture the "whomp" of the cabinet etc.

edit: attached the full version of the track for your pain or pleasure :-) in the first "round" of the long version I also use a compressor in front of the colorsound fuzz but then switch it off for the 2nd and third "round".

This sound reminds me of an old valve radiogram that I had when I was about 13. I was into electronics as a kid as well as guitar and I made a small transitor preamp that was effectively a clean boost but with a huge amount of boost and used to play my guitar through the preamp into an input socket that I rigged up on the valve radiogram and it really using to sing with a huge fat juicy "amp about to explode" kind of sound.
This attached sound clip is all controlled from the volume pot on the guitar. It's the Blackface amp model with master cranked full and drive cranked full and then a fully cranked colorsound fuzz into it. The treble bleed on the volume pots on the les paul don't really work that well...something to do with the jimmy page wiring system that screws up the treble bleed. Anyway, gives an idea of the control you can have over this thing.
