I understand why, but man this sucks.   At least for us Dream Theater fans.  :(

Does it really suck?

Bands change, until they list who is replacing him, until they release an album, we honestly don't know.

25 years is a long damn run, and hell its been 13 since Jordan joined, how many bands can say that?

the John's are still original members so its not like there is not core, Labrie has been in the band 20 years or so.

Now if they announce Steve Adler as the drummer, ok there is a problem, but I honestly don't think that will be the case.

Even sadder, I was out of town on business yesterday and heard the news from MARK!   ;D   He sent me the exact same statement, but it was posted on Facebook.   It is sad when Mark knows DT news before I do!  LMAO

Seriously, I too, consider this a blow to the band.  I know 25 years is a long time and all that.  The tone of this is clear though.  He didn't want to be out, he just wanted a break.  Their tour and recording schedule is MURDER.  I don't know how they made it this long.

IMO, this is not "quite" the same as Neal leaving Rush, but it's a major blow.  I don't know what to think.   :(
Doesn't sound like a big deal, I hear DreamTheater's not that good anyway.  ;)
BLASPHEMER!   :P
The exit story doesn't ring true.

sounds like a cover story.

He needed a break - one that involves jumping off one tour straight to tour with AV
huh!

He let's everyone know it was his band - he owned it, his dad named it,
hints at relationship difficulties but he loves the guys and wishes them well without him.

smoothly political/corporate statement.

Sounds like a big bad case of the "artistic differences" to me :)

I don't think I've heard heard any Dream Theartre music...ever ....anyone got any links to any ?
I never liked Mike Portnoy.  Yeah, he's a good drummer, I know.  But he never did anything for me.  I'm sure they will come out of this just fine.

You must have found some by now

I am no big fan - the singer and the "songs"  - but I like the band.

the track that grabbed me is this

Listen from 8:30

Listening again reminded me  I had to be encouraged over that to carry on listening to that point.

Then it grabbed me - bass n drum

Here's their new drummer:

Now I know why I've never listened to any Dream Theartre....a bit of a yawn !
Here's some different stuff.

Nope...I'm still not getting it.  Very tight playing, but as for the tunes, nope...not for me!

word to your mother
I've just "put my finger on it" why I'm not liking what I hear....just doesn't seem to be any passion in it.  Just standing about going through the "note for note" motions....sorry but it's one big yawn for me...no life, no soul.

Never been a DT fan either but I do love their little side project, LTE! Actually, I think Portnoy steals the show on the two discs I have and even JP plays with seemingly more emotion on those efforts, more inspired, less "constructed" anyway. Personally think Portnoy is a great drummer, glad to see he's branching out now. Both DT and MP will come out of this fine.

I actually have Mike's two-DVD drum video.  I used it and another when I was learning how to mangle another instrument.  ;D

The videos were pretty good, me, not so much.  ::)

I agree with fingers, there is more to this, the political correctness is laced with undertones of bad feelings...  However, I really don't care.  The band has been hit or miss for me for many long years now.  Maybe a shakeup will rejuvenate them.  Probably just wishful thinking.   Whoever they get, I hope they can write lyrics - lol!
Well.........as a fan of Avenged Sevenfold, I'm kinda geeked about Portnoy's new direction. The 'Rev' was a HELL of a drummer. When he died, I thought they were dead. But..with somebody like Portnoy, they wouldn't be. For those not familiar, check out this video. Listen to the drums....esp through the middle breakdown and coming out of it. The Rev was stupid fast.

And this one....AX7's first 'hit'. No sleeping in the rythm section...

And these two aren't their best. Just the more popular.
