Started with a small electric guitar with a mini amp in 1971 when I was 10..
It was a mix of a toy and a real guitar..a sort of 3/4 guitar tuned by ears. You can get the idea of the noise I was able to produce.
After some time, a friend of mine (5 or 6 years older than me) started teaching me some chords on a new EKO acoustic guitar.
He was really a cool boy. He lent me one of his electric guitars (a strange arrow shaped guitar bigger than me...) and at 12 I was playing in his band...still remember my first CCR "Proud Mary" and "Venus" from the Shocking Blue!!
(for the youngest: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auoArgmzqN4 :) )
During that period, I've found a stereo cassette labeled "Deep purple - Made in Japan"...Deep whaaat?
.....Listened to the Highway Star guitar solo and I was shocked! I had never heard something like that before!
That song was played in loop for a long time (thru a little mono cassette recorder) until I I've learned that solo by ears playing it on the EKO acoustic!! :D
Mr Blackmore was one of the main reason because I'm still playing the guitar... :)
Just to add to the replies, can any of you imagine being young and starting out today? A $300 guitar, A Fender Mustang 1 and multi channel digital recorder under $600 out the door.... What fun I could have had with that stuff when I was 16!
GP= guitar player
GW=guitar world
PG= premier guitar
Not 'insider' stuff to a guitar player. I like them two. Or them three. ;D

Funny, I was having this very conversation with my son this evening. I was telling him about my first guitar where the action was stupidly high. It used to take every bit of strength I could muster to make a barre chord in those days. It was ages until I actually realised that my guitar was shit as Up to and including that point I had only ever played really bad quality instuments. Oh to be young again with todays instruments and equipment.
