On the back of Johnny's thread about "Jump", and Kabala's comment about "Hot For The Teacher".....I'd like to add my own 'HOW THE FUCK DID HE PLAY THAT' solo.

Word has it that Vito Bratta played this in ONE take!!! :o 8-)

Not sure if that's true but WTF...I like it...

As great as Ed's Van Halen solo's are, I think he sounds even more inspired on MJ's "Beat It", just an impecable burst if taste and flair, always been my personal fave of his followed closely by the "Ice Cream Man" solo.

Speaking of Vito....the 'Wait' solo was pretty smooth. Always one of my favs.
As for 'how did he do that' solos.... I keep thinking of Nuno on Extreme's Pornographiti album. Just listen all the way through the first song on the CD, Decadence Dance. Crazy good chops all the way through the song.
The rest of the CD stayed on par with that.

On the flipside....I have huge admiration for the late Jeff Healey. Played with style and tone....with the guitar in his lap. And he was blind. To me, he is a guitarist''s hero. If you haven't already seen this, it will blow you away. Jeff jammin with Stevie:

THAT is impresive solo playing. I can play 'Jump', but I will never be able to touch this. I just do not FEEL the guitar like Jeff did.

Yes I can haul ass and play a whole bunch of notes rapidly. Might even impress a few youtube folks. But I'm good enough to know that I'm actually not that good (if that makes sense). I know my limitations. Jeff Healey had no limitations. He just played from the heart.

I can't believe this thread has sat dormant like this.  The only reason I haven't posted is because I've been SO busy I don't have time for long posts, and it would be a laundry list if I start naming great solos.
ok, whatever...   This is a very interesting topic Andy, and thanks for starting it.

So, just to get the fires burning, I'll say something here that I have said more than once on these forums.

The greatest guitar solo of all times = Jimi Hendrix, Band Of Gypsys, "Machine Gun."  Never has, never will, be topped.

More later, but this is the all time best solo.  Anyone who disagrees, fire away.  I'll take a bullet for this one!
My all time favorite guitar solo is Crossroads by the Cream from their Wheels Of Fire Album. That solo slay-ed me for years and years. Recently I grabbed an MP3'd version the album at the Tone Farm, and sure enough it still rocks my boat.

However there are many great guitar solos including, Hendrix, David Gilmore (whom I am impressed with more and more the more I learn about his work) And on and on Van Halen and of course Joe Satriani, who is one of my favorites. Listen to Steve Morse on the Divided We Stand Dregs album, it don't get much better than that anywhere.
Four great solo's spring to mind immediately: -

1. Lazy - Deep Purple, 'Machine Head' album - Ritchie Blackmore.  That wonderful cranked AC30 tone with a stock Strat combined with those amazing chops.

2. Bodhisatva - Steely Dan, 'Countdown to Ecstasy' - The most wonderful jazz/blues solos played by Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter & Denny Dias.

3. Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd - 'Pronounced Lehnerd Skinnard'.  So well known it's 'hackneyed' but it doesn't take away from what I think is just pure inspired rock 'n roll magic and a superbly structured solo by Allen Collins.

4. Goodbye to Love - The Carpenters.  Just a beautifully constructed guitar solo played by Tony Peluso.
