Here's my main issue though. When someone says "you plug it an, and you feel that it's an amp, not a modeller."
It's going through a mic. I NEVER feel like what I hear through a mic is like sitting in the room with an amp. It's just not the case. There are so many variables in what creates the sound of an amp in a room, that it's not possible to recreate that through a mic.
Certainly, I've heard a lot of samples where the KPA sounds exactly like whatever it is modelling--through the mic, through the same set of reference speakers. That's fantastic and exciting stuff. But to me, you need to remove the mic from the equation to really have a true amp sound. I dug the Pod for a long time, but I play live a lot now... for hours every week... and that "through the mic" sound just doesn't do it for me. What mic? An earthworks? An SM57? What preamp? Which is the combination that will sound like an amp in the room?
So yes, I believe it when people say "it sounds just like the amp" in the videos I see... but it sounds like those amps, and cabs, through their respective mics and preamps. It's identical--to the amp, through a particular cab, through a particular mic. That's useful to the home recordist. That's not useful to me unless I stop playing live.
This is the same thing I've been saying for the entire time I've been following the KPA threads, and the same reason I cringe when they call it an amp. I've got amps. I can't see something that's modeled through a mic ever working in a live situation the way a real amp would, or replacing them. End of rant.

I agree with you in that monitoring through speakers (a mic'd cab) is definitely not the same as playing a real amp....it can't be as there are lots of good things that happen with a real guitar cab in the room with you as the sound spreads everywhere and not just from the front of the monitors. However, if you turn off the KPA cab and go into a full range amp and then into a guitar cab it does indeed feel like an amp.....that's how I have been using it these last few days. However again, as I said in a much earlier post it is still not 100% like a real amp and anyone who says it is needs their head testing....it's very close, close enough to not really matter to be honest. The feel is there, the tone is there but there is something missing in the sustain (even with the noise gate off...I hate noise gates) But, considering you can have any number of amps that you desire inside the KPA and then going into a real cab then it is well worth the money as you couldn't possibly afford all those amps otherwise (or at least I couldn't)
I have always said there is no substitute for a real guitar cab in a room when you play, and if you play live to a big room or hall then you can have your signal going to both a real cab on stage (kemper cab off) and then send a stereo feed to the PA with the Kemper Cab on which satisfy's both the guitarists perspective of the sound and the audience.....phew.
Not piling on, but I don't even get the appeal for gigging guitarists, much less the home recordist. If I were heading out to play somewhere and I needed to carry with me an amp and cab, then I'm bringing the real amp and cab! Why bring something that emulates the amp (no matter how well)? Yeah, it can hold a bunch of different 'virtual amps' in that one unit as opposed to bringing along multiple amps one might own, but shit, even the biggest acts in the world use a couple of different head types, a handful of pedals and some rack gear live (plus cabs), they don't bring their entire unique/rare amp collections with them to reproduce every tone they're ever produced in the studio, and if you're thinking, "well with the Kempler, they COULD", then picture this...who the hell want's to see Yngwie playing in front of a Flux Capacitor into a pwr amp and cab? :P
Pro studios already have all the real amps handy as well, so again, why use the device that sounds just as good when right beside it is the real deal. I suppose if a person is off to play a club where there's a good chance even their pick would get lifted if they set it down, having the Kemper get ripped off (or damaged) is better than your beloved early 80's 2203. But at what, 2k (US) you a say for the Kemper, that's gonna sting too, lol! That's the only scenerio I can see where I'd rather have something like this over a real, authentic tube amp. Nothing else makes sense because the real thing is almost always available and will sound bett...umm, different. ;)
Maybe it's a case of "build it and they will come", ya know? Like these guys (and all the other companies trying to pull this off) just see the challange to reverse engineer the tube amp/cab/mic/speaker setup and are infatuated with that process itself. It's like crack for them, lol, they MUST tinker with stuff, to win the race and be the first to claim "we did it, throw away your tube amps and multimeters, buy our product!" And so people will, just to be the first to say "I got one, ha!" I can't see it going beyond NICHE MARKET status for the Kempler, just can't, and a fairly small one at that due to the price tag and also IMO, lack of practicality (unlike the POD stuff). You couldn't GIVE me one because in the end, I'd still prefer using my real amps, all three of 'em, lol....but I'm admittedly a music minimalist, never had a need for gobs of amps and effects.
That's the thing that makes me scratch my head over this... most pro studios have amps, and mics, and pres galore. They're gonna use them. Most home studios can't afford a $2000 DI.
I think this competes for a smallish market--one I call the "Fractal audio" market. Folks who love technology and can afford to spend a little coin on it, or folks who have a home recording setup and a bigger budget than most. The upside of this box is it's got a lot of phat sounds in it. The upside of the Fractal is that the effects are way deeper. Pick your poison... or buy both if you've got the budget!
I've just gotten beyond the point where I can justify a purchase like this. I play live a lot, have a live room at the studio, and I've got a bunch of tube amps at my disposal. I've got enough decent preamps and mics to capture my sound live. I've got pedals galore. There's no room, budgetary, or need-wise, for this box in my studio. I'd try it if someone sent me one, but I stand in front of loud amps multiple times per week, and that's what I love...
Definitely a niche market. I can see it being useful tho. I have my Krankenstein, my Engl 530, Peavey Rockmaster, and Marshall 9001 preamps and I still don't feel I've found the final tone I want. Although when i do find what i want, i probably won't need anything else.
Some people thrive on variety and/or change. Look how many times many of us here (*cough*Jon*cough*) have changed their rigs. If the KPA is as deep as advertised, you can do that whenever you want, without spending another dime. Especially if the quality of tone and "feel" is there.
But yeah, give me a live amp. Howver, I still need to record quietly...
charger — Jan 26, 2012
I have a lot of problems with the KPA, but I think it's pretty cool too--great for the home recordist who wants to have a really high end modeller.
Sorry, Charger, this is BS, and condescending.

Some people thrive on variety and/or change. Look how many times many of us here (*cough*Jon*cough*) have changed their rigs.
Actually I still have my Peavey C30, that has always been my backbone sound as I generally like a sound that is driven but not overly distorted. However, I do like to try the latest gear as without doing so I would never know if there's something there I like or not. The beauty of buying new gear like this is that if you find that you don't like you can still sell it for the same price that you paid for within the first few months. Everytime that I have sold an expensive piece of new-to-market gear I have never made a loss on it so it's not really much of a gamble. When these things are hard to get hold of quickly you can always re-sell them for top dollar.
Having said all that, this is the first time that I think I have found a keeper. To me, it is worth the money even to just use it as a virtual cabinet with a real amp (which I have done and it works really well). Yes, I know you can do that with impulses, which I did of course, but I could never live with the latency of this approach, but now I can.
Some people say things like "I can't understand why..." etc etc.....well does it matter? Why does anyone need to understand why someone would buy one of these? Either you like it or you don't, and both views are equally valid.

What if the Kemper into a poweramp and guitar cab sounds, feels, responds, sags, has better dynamics, etc, than your tube amps...then what?
What tube amps do you own?
Half the tube amps I play in music stores are horrible, not all tube amps are great.
You said it yourself a few years ago, you said you were in a music store and you played a JCM2000 Marshall TSL and you thought it sucked...Peter wasn't impressed because he owns and plays that amp. ;D
So, does every tube sound better than the Kemper simply because it has tubes in it?
Jon
Try this if you have some time...it blew my mind.
Go to the Pure Blues Profile that comes in the Kemper...play it for a minute or two, it's a great Profile...use your Les Paul.
Its the Matchless Chieftan amp with a Matchless cab and Telefunken CU29 mike.
NOW.
Load up either of these rigs of mine.
Same amp/Profile, the Matchless Chieftan, no EQ tweaks, as is.
But, I changed the cab to the Engl 412Pro with a KSM313 and SM57 mikes.
Then I tweaked the cab parameters a little.
The tame Matchless Chieftan "Pure Blues" Profile turned into a 'fire breathing monster' with the Engl cab and different mic's...blew my fucking mind!

Lance, trying it right now, back in a minute or two.
Edit: Yes, very usable tones right there. I love fiddling about with the cab characteristics and other settings as you can really "tune" the cab to what you want to hear. Good stuff.

...picture this...who the hell want's to see Yngwie playing in front of a Flux Capacitor into a pwr amp and cab? :P
I'm not going to go into the main pissing point being discussed here (with I think isn't productive and is only serving to get digs in on others), but many bands - including Yngwie - play with a HUGE back line behind them, however most of it is only for show. The few items that are actually being used (and some are usually only ready as backups) are *GASP!* mic'ed and sent to the FOH.
I had these made for the Vegas show "Hair Guitar" (fronted by Poison's keyboardist) when Guitar Jeff and are very own August were the guitarist for that week. By a very good coincidence, I was already going to be in Vegas that weekend playing on a different stage (different venue though) so I got to have some roadie fun and take video. August had his POD Pro going through a Peavey Classic 50/50 hidden behind this. The funniest part was when the Soundman saw it and told August to turn it down! LOL! Because the show was part music and part comedy, at one point the singer stopped a song and said August's stack was in the wrong place on stage. So I run up and grab the front, fake part while another guy grabs the little part behind it and we quickly move it where the singer pointed while the crowd got a laugh.

OK, here's a little test. Pull it apart as much as you like, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I still haven't changed my strings since October so it's very dull and lifeless. I find the best way to build up the pads on my fingers again after a long while not playing is to practice on old strings. What I really like about this is that it really responds when you dig in and ease off.
I always play with a metal pick too, so that what the chirps are down to, but what the hell.

is "output to Soundcloud" right next to "extra rinse" on that thing or something?

Well, unless I have serious hearing problems, the sound on this clip is totally incredible, in fact unbelievable to consider it didn't come from a mic'd up amp and cabinet...and the playing is seriously good.
I know you've added "your" reverb to the recording because you like that "room" sound, so to me it sounds like someone recorded you playing on stage in a club (due to your reverb), and whoever recorded it placed the mic in amongst the audience...but it most definitely sounds like the sound is coming from a real cab of a real tube amp.
If someone posted this tone and said they recorded it at a club during a SRV gig the comments would say it's an amazing guitar tone.
Btw, what Profile/Rig did you use?

It lets me login on the main page, but then when it goes to the forum it says I'm not logged in and sends me back to the main page)

This clip is making grown men act like babies, they're crying for their Kempers. ;D
I'm telling you if you walk the streets in the USA holding a Kemper you will get mugged, be very careful. ;D
IMHO.... this is a breakthrough piece of gear. Along with the latest AXE offerings, we're hearing modelers that are AT LEAST getting so close to the real thing that it's almost impossible to tell the difference.
I'm not sure I "get" all the negative comments, considering that long long ago, almost all of us met in a forum discussing our POD 2.0's and how cool they were. :) At the time, we'd have all killed for something like this. Doesn't mean it's perfect, or that we all have to have one. But... :-?
I keep thinking that someone like Paul could take this thing and finally find the tone he wants... Starting with an amp he loves but is not quite there... tweaking cabs, mics etc... This thing is SO good to start with, that I bet he could. And I wonder if the fact that it was through his KRK's would even matter by then.

What if the Kemper into a poweramp and guitar cab sounds, feels, responds, sags, has better dynamics, etc, than your tube amps...then what?
It doesn't.
What tube amps do you own?
My main ones are a Sovtek Mig 60, Egnater Tweaker, modified Gibson Electar, modified Epiphone Valve Jr, home-built 15 watt amp from Hammond organ amp guts. There are a couple other tube amps in the studio, but I don't use them all that often.
Half the tube amps I play in music stores are horrible, not all tube amps are great.
Yep. And you can get those models on your KPA too.
You said it yourself a few years ago, you said you were in a music store and you played a JCM2000 Marshall TSL and you thought it sucked...Peter wasn't impressed because he owns and plays that amp. ;D
And? I like JTM-era Marshalls, for the same reason I like Fender Bassmans... JCM 800 is about as modern a Marshall as I've really liked. I never claimed to love every tube amp, even though I like mine. I love the Bogner Shiva... And I like some cheap crap. My home practice amp is a Fender 15w tube amp with a digital front end, and I enjoy the crap out of it (though I wouldn't have spent more than $200 for it).
So, does every tube sound better than the Kemper simply because it has tubes in it?
You know I didn't say any such thing. I said the Kemper sounded just like the amps it models, through the mics and preamps they model, and I said I prefer standing in front of a tube amp through a cabinet. If you sit in front of reference speakers and not out in the room with a drum set, I can see the appeal. For me, the appeal is none.

I got studio space, and outgrew direct recording... I haven't used a Pod in at least 5 years.
And I never had $2000 for anything. The appeal of the Pod for me began, and ended, at $300. At $900 you're talking used CBS fender amp... the idea that I (PERSONALLY) would spend that on a modeller would have been ludicrous, and still is...
NOT THAT I CARE WHAT ANYONE ELSE DOES... DO WHATEVER THE HELL YOU WANT.

No, that's exactly what it is. It says "Modelling" in the friggin name, bro.
Glad to see you are unbiased, though.
Why is it that I have to like this amp? Do we all have to fall in line just because you sell it? I like Tokais, and you sell those. I find the KPA totally unfitting to me... so what? This is not the first time I've heard about the product that will revolutionize guitar... and not the first time from you, either.
charger - you obviously don't have to like it. Nobody here is trying to convince you of it, they're just being forced to defend themselves as you keep sniping at the damn thing and its price tag. We all know its not a live amp. Why you feel the need to keep pointing that out is beyond me.
The "outgrew" comment is condescending as well. Bully for you, mister big studio guy!!!
Paul, we all outgrew Pods a long time ago, as far as I remember. Back then, I would have killed to have the ability to record an amp at volume... now I can... so can a lot of guys here. I don't think it's condescending to say quite a few of us outgrew DI recording. Maybe the Kemper will change all that. However, clearly no one wants to hear my opinion on it, so I'll shut up.

We love you, Charger.
Charger, your opinion is valued, but we (well, I at least) don't need it sledgehammered in any further. Nobody is trying to sell you anything. I had a very rough week and I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings - found out my daughter has no cartilage in her knees, and my dog fell down the stairs because his retina detached and blood vessel burst in his other eye - he is effectively blind now, in a 2 story house. On top of Dory's frozen shoulder and bulging discs and hip issues, and migraines.. So shit is upside down here right now.
How about we actually talk about the clips? I think we've firmly established what the KPA is and isn't from a mechanical point of view. :)

Sorry to hear about the challenges you're having right now, hope things improve soon.
Paul, sorry to hear about your current situation, especially your wife's frozen shoulder. I had one of those and mine only resolved itself 2 years ago. I suffered with it for 3 years in total and for most of that time I couldn't play guitar at all. The pain of a frozen shoulder is very severe, unbelievably debilitating so my sympathy is with the Mrs. There is no cure for it, you juat have to wait for it to resolve itself, which is 3 to 4 years normally. Physio helps.
Chin up, things could always be worse and you will come out the otherside

Just curious, but is it fair to say that we will NEVER be able to understand the difference between the KPA and a "real" tube amp unless we're in the same room with both?
I just tend to keep hearing how it sounds fine recorded which, obviously, is the only way we're ever going to hear anything in a forum...
As an aside that I aluded to above, how many places do you guys get to play at (other than your houses) where your sound isn't mic'ed and sent through the FOH?
:)

It sounds a LOT better 'live' than it appears to sound on a recorded clip...most of the 'juice' is lost in the recording.
What's fascinating is how it sounds through studio monitors.
Previous modellers made my studio monitors sound like a set of cheapish Hi Fi speakers, with the KPA studio monitors sound like the cab of a guitar amp.
Good point, every band/gig I go watch the guitar sound is coming through the FOH, in other words I'm hearing the mic'd version of the amp.
Interesting.
Some guy at the KPA forum connected the headphone out of his KPA to his 4x12 Orange cab.
"a friend of mine told me that i could connect a headphone output to a guitar cab without a power amp (in my case a orange 4x12).
i tried it out - it actually works, and is pretty loud also. i can even connect the alternative output of the KPA and it works.
not really loud enough for a drummer, but definately loud enough to piss off your neigbours".

He is just bullshitting I think. I would think "may be" if it was a single 12'' but 4 of them... Noway!
Charger, all due respect, I mention TGP because it is such a larger sampling of musicians. MANY people there have replaced their stage amps with the AXE and now (new product) some are starting to replace them with the Kemper. The reasons are many. Some guys don't want to haul new, expensive boutique amps to gigs when it's -20, or 90 degrees and humid. Some don't want to do the same with irreplaceable classic amps. Some do "cover" bands and really do need a bunch of different tones and can't take 3-4 amps. Some actually say they are getting old and hauling around big heavy amps is too hard on their backs. (??) SOME say that they can have one device the does killer Marshall, Fender, Vox, Mesa, etc. tones in one box and that they could never afford to buy one of each of those amps to get the tones they can get with the AXE or Kemper.
I have a Budda, an Egnater, a home built custom amp, and a VHT. I'd never sell all of them, but I can't believe there is no point in something that could replace them all and do everything they do and MUCH MUCH MORE. And I've never had $2K for an amp either... but I have more than that in my amps/cabs now.
Plus, every time I play live (yes, I do at least once a month) I use the HD500. It sounds really good, and is easy to carry and put in my very limited space on stage. That said, in that application, I pick one tone ahead of time with a solo OD pedal and thats it. But I do also pick a different one every time.
K, I have to backtrack on an earlier comment I made...I suppose you could give me one of these (preferably already loaded with a ton of high gain profiles, including Cornfords). :)

In other words you'd force yourself to try one if you could get it for free?.
It reminds me of the Gibson fanboy guitarists that contact me here in SAfrica asking for a Tokai endorsement, I tell them what to do with themselves. >:( ;D
LMAO! Don't I wish!! ;D
Really, what seems interesting is the idea of sampling fairly accurate repo's of exotic amps that you would otherwise never have a chance with. For instance those blasted Cornfords that seldom show in this part of the world. Or a Peters (AUS). Or a another dream amp, a Dumbell? It would be cool to hear those as close to first hand as possible and see what all the love is about. Of course the goal would then be to someday pick up an actual version, but you see what I'm saying, basically, the Kemper would be a VERY cool tool for amp GAS "homework" (for me anyway...but I can see where many would love it as their MAIN rig as well).

Well, the discussion on the internet over the last 12 months was all about the Kemper being useless if you don't have amps to Profile.
That was all put to bed when on day one the Profiles started streaming in, little did we know how many guitarists there are just in Germany with amazing expensive amps.
Everyday new Profiles of amps I couldn't dream of owning.
Wait till the US guys start getting their Kempers, who knows what kind of rare amps will start being Profiled, maybe even a Dumble.
I think in less than a year, it will be possible to find the profile for every amp that is worth having. Be it mass production or boutique.
Here's what Profiles come stock in the Kemper.

Wow! I didn't know it was this much. Nice.
