With all the fun clips being posted around here, I decided to join in.  This is my old Marshall9001 preamp, hasn't been used in ages (I used it for gigging in the early 90's) recorded direct and using a cab impulse.  It has the Maxon OD-9 in front of it.  The 9001 has a really odd gain structure and tends to be muddy in the bass, the Maxon seems to help out there.  Anyway, I didn't compare to the original track, just dialed and hit record.  To my ears it is missing some top end and probably has a bit too much gain.  Oh well..

sounds really good.

Where's that flange type effect coming from ?
That is the stuff, I did not think anything wrong with the gain or tone. Nice stuff.
Thanks fingers, it's Waves MetaFlanger on the "Full Meta Flanger Reset" Preset with the mix dialed down to 16% or so....
Thanks dbm :)

Yes! =van evans=  :)

Sounds real good for direct. You're right, I compared it with the original, it needs a hair more high end sizzle. What guitar/PUP did you use?

I was amazed at the tone difference my Ibanez/Dimarzio made vs the Jackson/JB for lower gain, crunchy stuff (the Nez/Dimarzio FTW with much greater clarity, at least on chords/rhythm).

Thanks Derek, used my trusty old red Ibanez S something or other, with a JB, lol...  What DiMarzio do you have?
What's with the crappy 12 second clip?   :-?

When it sounds that good, we demand more you know.  ;) ::)
Well I keep waiting for Alex and Michael to join in, guess they're off in Cabo or something....
Oh, and thanks :)

The Ibanez has a Tone Zone in the bridge, you heard it on the VH Mean Schils clip. Without changing any amp/mic settings, I tried the same clip/riff with the Jackson (w/JB in the bridge) and it was too bland and dare I say it, murky, lacking the clarity of the Dimarzio. From now on (for me at least), the Nez is my main rhythm axe (and prolly my contemp Strat, it has a Super Distortion, similar results) and the Jax will do leads/melody/solo, etc - for that stuff, the JB owns.

EDIT: Ok, sorry about the jacking, but I had to make a quickie A/B thing to back up the talk. Really simple 80's White Lion riff. No changes done, played the riff with one guitar, unjacked it, plugged in the other, hit it again (both played the same way, guitar volume back for first pass, up after the little break). Both guitars are Alder, so it really is the PUPs on display here.

0:00 - 0:21 = Jackson/JB, 0:22 - Fin = Nez/Dimarzio. Both sound good IMO, but for this type thing, I prefer the clarity and added definition of the Dimarzio.

Who's Michael? I thought Van Halen's bassist has always been Wolfgang...;)

I mean, he's on the album covers and stuff - or he was, until the fan revolt prompted those douchebags in Van Halen to fix the graphics on the Van Halen site.

I hate the fact that someone I so admired growing up has proven himself to be such a tremendous dick like Edward Van Halen has. He's shit all over his legacy.

Maybe it's a good thing Hendrix died when he did - maybe he would have ended up a dickwad like EVH.

Chickenfoot forever! Go Sammy, Mike, Chad, and Joe!

Okay, maybe not forever, but I at least hope the album is good and shows people that Michael Anthony is a lot better than EVH has always falsely claimed...

Great clip, by the way. :)
Tripper
Yeah Derek, that's a great comparison clip, I like the Nez tone better there as well.  I have a Tonezone laying about here somewhere, may have to slap it into something and see.

It could be the Jackson is just a darker guitar, even with the same wood...  I have 3 S series Nezzes, all 3 are alder, 2 of them sound virtually identical, yet the third one has this annoying metallic nasal thing going on, I have swapped 4 different pups out of that sucker trying to find something to tame it.  It sounds good on some lower drop C rhythm stuff, but going up to higher notes really highlights the part that drives me nuts...

Heh thanks Tripper.  Yeah it's very sad about Eddie...  I gave up with all the drama years ago.  Doesn't seem like he'll ever pull his head out his ass again...   :(
That sounds pretty good.  What cab impulse did you use?

I'll listen again from home with the headphones to get a better listen.
It's an unknown Marshall cab, by that I don't know what speakers are in it, with a 57 off axis...
Didn't even know you had a 9001.  What else do you have stashed in your closet that we don't know about?   Not hiding a Mesa Recording Pre in there too, are you?   :-?
Heh I wish...
