i heard the new metallica song!!!! crap!!!!!
Meh...
better than St. Anger... but definitely not Metallica at their best...
let me amend...
That is solely my opinion...
Ya'll judge for yourself...
you can hear it at metallica.com
or their myspace page...
I just took a listen. I like.
metallica!!!
Ugh, never liked much of what that they did.
listening to their new song would be a complete waste of time.
It's a thinly-veiled knockoff of Fade to Black. They even use similar guitar tones on the "heavy" part.
If this is the way Metallica is going, it's a far fucking cry better than anything they've put out in about ten years.
My issue with this, though, is the bizarre fucking production. I listened to this now on two different monitoring systems, and I'm hearing a ton of distortion in the production, which doesn't make it heavier... it only makes it sound shittier. The snare and kick are both over-crushed. The guitars are way over-distorted. Not in the source, but on the tape or whatever. Metallica's old tunes were heavy and crushing, without having to rely on overdriving the shit out of the recording apparatus. I think there's a way better recording and mix of this song that could be made.
The production on that really is over cooked for sure.
Actually, just listening to that again. Surely it can't be as fucked up as that on the CD? Did something happen to this when it was ripped to MP3, was it over normalised or something because the later section (which I quite like) sounds so over distorted it really is unpleasant to listen to.
I did not listen to it all the way through but on the recording forum I frequent, they all had the same thing to say about it over produced, over compressed and of course maximized to the max. I don't like much of what Metallica ever did, and as a non fan all I can say is it sounds like more of the same to me. But you know they may be running short of money, therefore they heal all of the old arguments and go on the road making music for money.
Knowing Metallica's recent productions, this is "as designed"--it's just the next step after the St. Anger snare sound. Which is a shame. Listen to the production on "Fade to Black" if you get a chance. Clean, big drums. Thick, edgy guitars. But no production-induced distortion.

No, they're definitely fine for money for the forseeable future. Those guys are ridiculously loaded. In fact, musically I think this is a big step forward. Production-wise, it's a big step back.

My LA producer friend is a sober living dude, he goes to meetings and all of that, and he sponsors some very big names in the music and movie industries that are trying to get clean that have wasted fortunes, I can't mention any names but you are sure to know everyone he talked about. And I would never have known that they were broke. Not saying that Metallica is in that mix in fact he never mentioned them at all, but you would be surprised at how some of those folks have wasted fortunes, and I mean big fortunes on stupid shit, and no one outside of their inner circles has a clue.
I open to listen to the rest of the cd.
I used to be a big metallica fan back in the day , and just like most others , I didn't care for their "new " stuff.
You can't decide if you like it or not just by listening to one song.
Wait and see I guess.
I'm anxious to hear the new album aswell.
Although from what I've heard so far, it's yet again not classic Metallica too me (MOP or RTL or even JFA).
"The Apocalypse" sounds like shit - like a bunch of fast riffs turned into a song.
"The day that never comes"... like a mix between "Fade to black" and "until it sleeps". It's ok but nothing to get too crazy about.
Good to hear Kirk has his leads back though.
Btw, there's a song on the new album called "The Unforgiven III". Give me a break!!!!!!

Another Thing That Should Not Be !
What's up with the FUCKING snare drum fetish they have??? It doesn't sound as choked as the last disk (but there's chickens that aren't as choked as that), but it's still kinda ridiculously loud.
So far so good. I really love the 1st 2 singles.
Here's the 2cd one.
where is the rest of the songs????!!!!load it up !!!!
UUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!! I used to love these guys. I mean when I was a teenager we would drive around with ...And Justice For All cranked smoking dope... those were such great times in my life. When I used to go through the whole typical teenage angst BS there was no better catharsis than laying on my bed with my red light on in the dark smoking some really good weed and listening to Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning. When I first picked up the guitar, it was the entire Master of Puppets album that made me really see the potential of the instrument.
I mean these are the guys who instilled in me my life long love of Mesa/Boogie amps. These are the guys who wrote such incredible tunes as Orion and Fade to Black, which, say what you will, in the 80s was one motherfucking great metal song.
But I just can't stand anything after And Justice for All. I mean I remember i was fucking a chic who worked a Turtles and she gave me a copy of The Black Album (the one called "Metallica"), you know, the one with Sandman and such. I got it before release and had a party so my friends could come and listen to it before you could buy it. We were all so bummed. it is kind of funny now, but back then, Metallica putting out a crap album was enough to really put a negative slant on my mood for day son end. Well, also the party got busted and I went to jail that night, that sucked too... 80 people at my house and the cops carting me off for disturbing the peace ...
But anything they have put out since makes even that black album sound good by comparison.
Listening to Day that Never Comes, James singing just really bothered me. I dont undersand what has happened to these guys, better that they all had dided in a plane or bus wreck back in 90 or 91 than to have gone down the road they have. At least Cliff Burton (RIP) isn't around to see what they have become...
I haven't listened yet to the new stuff, but once again, I loved the black album, and all the prior stuff, but since then, spotty at best.
I really liked the black album too. It might not have been classic Metallica, but it was a great album music-wise. Anything after that was just... well, shit.
The "Apocalypse" track sucks IMO! Really uninspired song-composing. Sounds like another St. Anger track. Plus, Jaymz singing is just really bad. It never bothered me with the first 5 albums...
New album sounds like a mixture between " ...and justice for all " and the "black album " IMO.
Very pleased with the outcome actually.
The problem for me is I can't listen to production like this. It's too distorted and loud and crushed. Metallica albums were always great sonically, in the past. This time, everything is distorted. It's too much. It would make it impossible to go through repeated listens for me.
Maybe Metallica SHOULD launch a nuke attack in the loudness wars and be more louderer, more crusheded and more distorteder than everything else. ;D
But it's true. Because of the loudness there are a few albums I don't listen to as much as I would otherwise. Audioslave or the last few Chili Pepper albums are some notable "loudness war" casualties. But we'll see. We'll see if my ears can take it.
This loudness crap is a fucking joke and needs to be rebelled against for the cheezy cheap trick it is.
it is ranging from unpleasant to getting painful to fucking awful.
It is an artefact only possible with digital - analogue never allowed that level of crush and boost.
Making something "sound" loud musically is an art and respect is due to that.
Just slamming it is fucking moronic -
I fucking hate the volume wars
The irony is metallica got big using the FM curve scoop thing first - make them the loudest and baddest.
And now - even though they haven't got a clever trick like that - they still seem to be looking to do the same trick by slam for a decade - give it up.
I listen to the album and i am really surprised, they went back doing the old school, black album / and justice for all. Good stuff!!!
The thing that kills me with this group is they have enough money to get GOOD production....yet.....they keep producing SHIT. I just can't LISTEN to this stuff anymore. I used to LOVE this band. But the drums sounds.....Jesus fucking Christ....I could make a better sound on a tin bucket than lars can on a fucking snare. It's just SAAAAAAD.
It's one thing when you are a death metal group and 5 people buy your shit and you can't afford to have kick ass production, but these dudes have all the money any band would need to make 20 fucking albums....and it sounds like shit. WTF?!?!?!?!
Metallica performed "The Day That Never Comes" Live on TV (Jools Holland show) in UK a few days ago. With the TV's own production on the sound/mix etc, it sounded really good, but listening to the mp3 again it sounds like shit. Everything about the album version production sounds worse than one of my tracks...and that's saying something! ;D
edit: just found it on youtube already!

Some very tight playing in the 2nd part of this song.
The production on this is much better than the album (guitars slightly out of tune though?)
and still got that fucking awful snare (sounds like a saucepan)
and then there's the official metallica video of the song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mlahvvymkxc
The mix on this sounds like shit to me (especially the drums) !
