I hear they are coming out with a new generation POD this month or the next.
PodHD or something.
Only 16 amp models but high quality instead of quantity... (so they say).
And just as I was saving up for an Axe-FX ;)
Looks pretty interesting. Definitely something new to play around with...
Anyone else besides me interested?
I'm interested in hearing them. I'd be even more interested if they had all the bass amp models included, too. As of now, there are none. I would imagine they're going to offer model packs, though.
But it is an exciting prospect - they completely re-did their modeling from the ground up, according to Rich Renken from Line 6.
For now I'll enjoy my X3 Live...though the prospect of something truly NEW from Line 6 is exciting (instead of more repackaging).
Tripper
Yeah, I'm playing through the X3 only since late 2007.
I think it was time for them to come out with something completely new after repackaging the same technology over and over again (with some minor tweaks for the X3 series) since 2002.
At 499$ for the biggest version Pod, if this sounds as good as they suggest - this will be the biggest thing since the XT.
Over the years I had given up on Line6. I'm very curious to see if they deliver...
Schneidas — Sep 08, 2010Anyone else besides me interested?
I asked Az about it, he just became a friend on facebook. Maybe he can say a little something about it.
Yes, I would be interested....If they can get the cab sims right then that alone would do it for me.
I'm amazed that no-one (not that I know of anyway) has produced a real valve amp head with
very high quality cab sims built in. Please don't say "vox tonelab" ;D
Az could not reveal any details I guess but he says there are some big time producers and guitarists out there in La La Land who can't wait to get their hands on the thing.
One thing he did say was; they did not try to recreate the Axe FX or imitate it. They just set out to do much better starting from with what they already have done with the Pod Series. I am interested in hearing it because he said those producers said they could not hear the modeling in it. From what they said to him was; it sounds like the real deal miked up. Even the AxeFX sounds like a modeler from the clips I have heard, so if they can get that done. I would be interested in demoing one.

I will say this; I have a Tonelab, and it is by far and wide the worst modeler I have ever had
except for a few of the cleans which are stellar

There is also some talk of "adaptive amps". Some of the speculation is a cabinet with some type of modelling and/or tube built in. With the clips I've seen of the new Variax, I am excited about what they have up their sleeves.
Here's a link to an ad for the new Pod HD's

Cheers,

It also does realistic overdrives as long as you have a good distortion stomp in front of a clean patch. I usually use a Nady TD1 tube distortion stomp in front of the T-lab, and it sounds as real as any modeler I have ever heard or used for a genuine tube overdrive sound.
I love what I'm hearing so far, with one exception... Is anyone else fed up with the HD buzzword? ::) Freaking Lowes is advertising wall paint as "High Def color!" Give me a break. It's lame already.

You are not in marketing are you?

If it sells product it will be around for as long as it works.
He's just jealous that his last name starts with a "C" so he can't be HD as well DBM! ;) :D

I'm with you 100% on that!
I wonder if we will all get sucked into buying the new pod and then moan about it 1 week later...it's fizzy etc ;D

Well do it like I do it, buy it at an internet shop that gives free shipping, and send it back if you don't like it. If the thing has any kind of defect they pay the return shipping, if not it is a $15 (US) pop to send it back. I ain't buying one myself, I know it won't sound as good as my current setup. Even if it does, I still ain't buying one. I am in the last years of my playing, I don't need any new gear. GAS still bugs me but I resist it very well lately. I have not bought any new gear in 3 or 4 years that I kept.

Reminds me of the 'ol Guitar Center "rental" plan I've done before... ;) :D
Line 6 are brilliant at marketing and facelifting their products. Bottom line is that each time they bring out a new product they say it's got better modeling than the last one....in other words, what we made before was too digital, but THIS one now sounds like a real amp! After a while you just get jaded! ::)
But there's no doubt that modeling is evolving - the quality of the Axe-fx ultra represents a real advancement - not perfect, but arguably the best modeling system currently out there. So it will be interesting to see if the Line 6 HD units are as good. Even if they are only 90-95% as good as the Fractal Axe-fx ultra, from a cost & useability perspective they'e going to be much more attainable. £2,000 plus for an Axe-fx Ultra is a LOT of money for most folk.
I found out a bit more info on the 3 Line 6 HD's:
Some differences between the POD HD 500, POD HD400 and POD HD300 (besides the number of footswitches and the screen size, as shown in the Guitar World's add) are:
POD HD500 - More than 100 effects, 48s looper, 512 factoring presets, USB 10 channel, MIDI IN/OUT/THRU, Aux input, XLR input, Variax input.
POD HD400 - More than 90 effects, 28s looper, 256 factoring presets, USB 2 channel.
POD HD300 - More than 80 effects, 28s looper, 256 factoring presets, USB 2 channel.
I'd be very interested to try one though just to see if it's genuinely a new era of modeling ala axe-fx, or whether it's just a clever bit of repackaging with just a little bit of improvement tonally. ;)
I wouldn't get too carried away with the axe-fx praise there Rich. I bought and then sold one month later an Axe-fX. Whilst it is very good, it still isn't good enough....a real amp still beats it hands down. The problem with all of these modellers is they cram the box with effects and gizmos to hide the underlying guitar amp sound. It would be really nice to see a true AMP & Cab modeller. No effects at all, just simply really good amp/cab tones with an effects loop. That would be really good, but nobody does it because none of them have yet got the amp/cab modelling part 100%.
The only pure DSP amp I've heard that sounded really good Jon & the closest I've ever heard to a real valve amp is still the Hughes & Kettner Zentera Combo - about £2,500 with the 'Z' stageboard. No longer in production but very rarely will you ever see one of these being sold second-hand which is I think a testament to how good these amps are - users just tend to hold onto them.
If you ever get the chance to try one Jon, let me know what you think. Two Sharc 32 processors with modeling that really concentrates on the amps & cabs, with only a handful of relatively basic (by todays standards) effects. And being H&K they're built like tanks. Makes the Line 6 Vetta sound like a toy in comparison. The punch, harmonics, feel, response (eg volume roll off) and dynamics of the Zentera was the best I've ever heard. Considering when it was originally brought out, it was way ahead of its time. Here's the spec:
