I discovered a really cool feature on the Pod X3 last night.

Using the dual amp feature I;

  • setup guitar tone 1 with the actual tone I wanted to record
  • setup guitar tone 2 with the tone that I would actually play (and hear). I used a "juicier" tone so that it made the playing easier, more fluid.
  • I then clicked the "mute" button for tone 1 within Gearbox so that I would only hear the "jucier" tone when I played.
  • I then set my DAW inputs to record ONLY tone 1 (remember this is the tone that I am NOT hearing when I play)

This enabled me to play along to my track with an "easier to play" tone but actually record a completely different tone.

and the result is attached (by the way, needs new strings)

Sounds like you're having fun regardless!  :)

(Nice tone that you did record too!)

.....though to me the one he didn't record is da bomb
Good job, Jon! Good idea, nice tone and well played, me likes!

Sounds like it works - nice tight playing - very tuneful.
Another thing you could try is to record the guitar dry (while playing with it "juicy"), then you could reamp the dry track with several different tones.
again, nice tones Jon.  Any post EQ'ing?  My PODxt always sounds just a bit too "digitalcrunchy" too me.  These tones do not.  Time to upgrade to X3?

No post processing at all to the main tone which is recorded without any effects. I do however add reverb.

By the way, that was a standard Hiwatt patch.
Sounds really nice, man. I love that Hiwatt patch...the Hiwatt is one of my favorite models - it's very touch-sensitive.

Sounds pretty decent for a modeler, the playing was pretty darn good too.
Great idea, Jon!  One thing I was missing was a physical dry out to record but monitor wet like on the X3Pro but this work around will do.  Thanks.

Cheers,
