I wonder if August knows him. They both went to GIT down in Hollywood (the one in California which, I've since learned, is not the "original" Hollywood! ::) ).
I know it was not a competition, just saying, though both were great, I personally enjoyed the left more (only watched the video the page initially loads with). Its a cool concept! Kinda neat seeing the split screen and watching both contributors play, then wait, then play, etc. Just watching the way the vid is though, you'd think the dude on the left seemed genuinely interested in listening to the other guys takes, while the guy on the right for some reason reminds me of Yngwie on the G3 group jam thing - you know, not really hearing your playing, just lemme know when its my turn to go again thing. I also liked the left dudes phrasing better, hell, he even had the nicer looking guitar! Both had tone.

Well, I think their tone is really nothing special at all as is the playing. They are good players for sure who learned their licks and know how to deliver 'em, but I didn't hear just one lick that wasn't around for 20 or 30 years. They look to me like two well-behaved little schoolboys who did their homework. Gotta move on and come up with something new, exciting and above all way more personal. Stuff like that really doesn't grab me anymore, oh well, must be my age.....
Don't judge by the first video, take a look at some of the solo videos where the tone shines through much better than the first opening video....in fact I don't actually like the first split-screen video much so maybe I should have linked directly to some of the others instead.
Whether we have heard the licks before or not is neither here nor there really. Excellent tone and exellent playing.
I am not hearing the good tone... I guess I'm just getting into cleaner tones. But I hear better tones on FNJs all the time. Can you point me to a specific video that you thought sounded great? I flipped through a few at random and nothing caught my ear.
Excellent playing - reminds me of the Dutch maestros that used to hang at the hole - sweepy shreddy stuff.
Tone wise - most of the vids have a video cam mic recorded sound - some better than others.
but the tones sound like they would be excellent if recorded well.
The vid you put up is the one that has been recorded best - maybe mic'd up and synched with the vid.
And the guy on the right sounds best to me - both tone and playing
I guess you guys didn't read beyond the video? The guy on the right IS the RiffGuy and the one on the left is one of his pupils (or, at least, someone who learns from the site).
Both nice but, personally, I've grown fond of a bit more feel with the shredding. :)

But technically impressive is never enough, it's supposed to be music..... :o

I agree on the content, not much of a tune there, just a chops swap (though thats proabably all they intended here). I didn't bother clicking on the other clips because they're all labeled things like "shreddin, "jammin", "solo", "evening shred" etc, figured its more of the same, no toonage. I prefer more melodic phrasing, stuff that rips but can still be memorable. Players like MacAlpine, Timmons, etc, music that sticks. Hell, even Yngwie's first couple of solo efforts had melodies that stayed with you. Vai, Govan and the like on the other hand, though brilliant, their music is forgetable for some reason with me.

I thought the same thing. I pokes around a listened to a few of guy on the right's things... ended up liking that guy on the left best of anything I saw.
