Tripper — Aug 15, 2008The only stipulation I'll make is that "Redneck" should be one word.
And besides, dbm is from the northeast anyway...originally, right?

Yeah but I lived in Northern Florida long enough for the South to wear into me. Besides the term Red Neck comes from the Railroad workers in West Virginia way back when they first put in the train tracks linking the coal mines to the bigger cities. So it is really a back woods term not just a Southern term.
When I grew up in Southern New Jersey I lived about 6 miles from some back woods folk we called Pineys, and you could not tell them from Georgia/South Carolina/Tennessee country folk. they had the same southern accent the same kind of thought process. I never had a problem getting along with the Southern Rednecks, I grew up with their cousins and knew their ways by osmosis. I was the Yankee who was alright. I have friends in the back woods of North Carolina and when I go there to visit I am the Yankee. But they don't think of me as a stranger anymore.
