If interested - the annotated woodshed:
begin woodshed! - returning the PRS to use after the last "traffic" clip... bogner blue/flexi... this seems too muddy and compressed. (02202015)

hmm, Gerald mentioned the sgear amp sim... try that! it's cool but I experience overwhelming levels of faux-cab-tweaking meh, eff it. (02232015)

ok, use the univalve as a distortion pedal instead of the blue... get a synth drone pad going and just try to work up a jam... damn, forgot how demanding/revealing/rewarding/punishing the univalve is... how did I set up that delay? bah. (02282015)

frustrated with the broken string at the end of that, better take a few days off. be sure to drink too much coffee while putting on new strings... flubs are so damn obvious with the univalve, I'll mix the guitar extra loud to emphasize it (apparently? lol)... delay and reverb to the left.. meh, don't do that again (03032015)

ok, just relax and listen to what you're doing - forget delay, use reverb (03052015)

well, that was nice. ok, enough prs/univalve. since I'm into reverb now... how about trying to use an IR that isn't an IR to get a pad effect? ooh, flange it! and tune the strat to CACGCE*? ok. (03062015)
http://www.ironsheep.com/mp3/ironsheep/Media/shimmerish.mp3
so, that stuff in the middle will have to be done on an acoustic later... not going to bother mic'ing all of that. alright, use drop D instead... and riddle and... what did that keeley DS-1 sound like?... ah, a riff! and stick the "shimmer" in there somewhere... this needs ebow!! ok, be sure to mix it too loud, and (03122015)

and... I think I've arrived at the next "song" to work on. woodshed complete!
heh.
*actually, it was CACGCEb

Killer. I like the bogner blue the best of all the bogner pedals. Of course most of the clips I've heard were yours. Sounds good to me.
This is all I've listened to so far (twice).
ah, you might just enjoy the whole list then!

Sounds kind of like it's got a blanket over it.
I've been less and less happy with the amp and cab sims I've been playing with lately. I'm guessing you're not enamored either...
yeah, I couldn't get into tweaking and all that. it could be fixed to sound better I'm sure... but meh, why bother?
I like the gain and the sound of the amps (stealer and one other... mark5 based, I think) but there's no complexity in the highs like tubes. I mean, it sounds too "good" - where's the slightly distorted sound of tubes drifting just a little in and out of proper bias? that's the best part... ah well.

So I kind of got lost in this one and just realized I've been listening to it for about an hour. That's a thumbs-up. This is like Eno/Lanois. Not as much going on with the ambient drone as there is with Eno, but the playing reminds me a lot of Lanois, who is, btw, a killer guitar player, not a showman, but a really tasty player, who has really great tone.
Tasty and chewy without being really unnecessarily virtuosic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-uh3YKXakE
Okay, and this one is in the same vein--just listenable and melodic and tasty.

hah, that's great - glad you liked it!
I've done some lanois listening since you mentioned him before... maybe 10 years ago? wow. anyway, yeah, I really dig his stuff - his recent pedal steel work in particular is making me think I might want one.
that vid is pretty awesome!
I replied too soon... the final three clips are also in the same vein, drony, solo guitar, melodic. This is the album I want...
*Zzzzz...* *Snort!* Er, ah... Hey! :-? Did I hear ALBUM??? Where do I sign up? ;)
I've only got about 355 Sheep clips with over 19 hours of .mp3's alone. I think it's about time for a nice, polished album! :)
Been looping a few of your links above for awhile now.
you're only missing about 400 then! ;D
glad you guys like em - I'm never sure if this kind of stuff is something anyone would want to listen to other than me.
if 45+ minutes of these sorts of things would be worth it... that is something I could certainly do. hell, I do 2-4 hours of it a day as it is! lol. an album of this material would be a lot more honest/authentic anyways - I never quite feel like the "rock song" tunes are "me" because they're so... organized/planned. I never really play that way - these clips are what "songs" are to me, most of the time. I mean, I couldn't play any of my "rock songs" if asked... but if asked, "hey, jam around with that fucked up D melodic minor melody" - can do! lol.
one thing that's going to happen though... if I'm getting into this for real... I'm recording at volume in the room with the cab. feedback makes these jam sessions kinda... um... cooler. by several orders of magnitude!
So maybe your "concept" album is simply a collection of different background melodies that you jam over? ;)
I'm guessing that few here would object to that! :D
yeah, except the background will likely be a drone... and I might add more guitars. two (or more) ebow guitars doing unusual harmonies is pretty cool, for example. adding some rhythm guitars helps if the tempo is faster... moving the root around with a bass while lead lines are happening is pretty cool... that kind of thing. but we'll see... maybe it's just going to be 5-10 drone jams with solo guitar -- whatever it turns out to be, it has to sound cool and must be all original - in the sense that I played it (no midi drum loops!)... I mean, echoing influences is unavoidable but I can avoid using someone else's drum performance captured in midi. those are my two rules.... so far.
man, "the melodies are the songs"... I can't really express how meaningful this realization is to me. its on the level of the "oh, wait, A minor and C major use the same notes?" moment! haha.
I bet Charger would be willing to help you de-MIDI-fy your drums too. :)
Excellent stuff. Thanks for sharing. My faves were the goldhall noodle and the peelerintro. The commentary is cool for the clips.
I listen to all of your stuff. Sometimes it takes me a while to get to it.
no worries DM, always somewhat surprises me that you guys aren't sick of this by now... when someone listens to it is hardly a concern! heh.
thanks for the listens - I'll post the album in a year or so. ;)

thanks for the listens - I'll post the album in a year or so. ;)
Had to quote this! Remember, "or so" is not a long time! ;)
so, I dunno about this album thing.
I've been trying (a LOT)... but it's honestly killing my will to play along with a general decline of inspiration. I'm feeling constrained, rushed (so something isn't too long) - over-planned... bleh. I mean, I'm sitting here trying to "do something cool inside a 4:00 loop" instead of forgetting all that stuff - which is the only way it ends up really working.
I just really don't feel like I need an "album" - why should I have one? I'm not a pro, I don't see it as an accomplishment I'd like to have (I'd much rather have random recorded things around that I think are pretty cool... like I do already...), I will never tour, hell, I won't ever perform live... I don't want publicity, I don't want fame or money... what's the point?
I mean, I record several hours of material a month (at least) when I'm playing regularly... I could be more diligent about posting clips instead? heh.
(btw, that 22 minute clip was trying to figure out the next "track"... heh)
so here, here's 22 minutes of wandering noodles and general wankery from two weeks ago. I'll think of it as "side one"... ;D
http://www.ironsheep.com/mp3/ironsheep/Media/03302015output.mp3
and this is as far as the "album project" got. guitars only. http://www.ironsheep.com/mp3/ironsheep/Media/dreams%20travel%20tension.mp3
I like a few things, mainly the noises, guitar "drums" via delay and elmo... but I think it's just not that cool overall. besides, now that I've played some of the parts 50,000 more times since that recording, they sound different... but... meh.
Yeah--albums are lame anyway. When you stumble on somthing sick, throw it into iMovie with a picture of a sunset and throw it on youtube. People should be able to hear you beyond the forums...
that or soundcloud? is one better than the other? I'm kinda leery of both for unknown reasons. it would be kinda nice to have a centralized posting spot, though.
edit: good lord, google's terms of use are unreal. reads like "click to agree that all you are or will ever be is now and will forever more be owned by google"... lol.
Side one sounds good. LOL I'll check out the others later.
Edit: I like the "Just Guitars" LP. Great stuff! Kind of Soundtrack like. With a video of some sort. Much like that train ride you took us on a while back.
Awesome as is.
thanks! by the third part, I lost interest... but I could see using the first two somehow... in something else.
side one... heh.
