Yeah, bought ANOTHER amp (stop laughing). After testing it out with the stock tubes I loved it, I mean shit, I bought it...but it goes without saying an amp can sometimes give ya so much more with better tubes. Plus, you never know how much mileage the existing tubes have on them with a used amp so I bought 5 new preamp tubes for now and slapped them in. I'll pick up a quad of pwr tubes in a couple weeks.

Anyway, wanted to see which of these two clips is viewed to have the better tone (or both or neither ;D). One is with the stock tubes (including the stock layout for V1-V5). The other is with the new tubes (EH) and in a slightly different layout. The backing track is all Fingers (by way of his most recent fnj ;)). Everything else is the same, guitar, amp settings, etc, I even sorta tried to play with a similar vibe (but sorta failed). The tones are pretty different, especially the gain. I read that a 12AU7 is a nice spin in V2 of this amp so that's the main switch (stock has a 12AX7 there).

I personally like clip A. Has more hair to it. Clip B is warmer.
Both tones sound quite similar and are cool,
I think I may be swayed by A though,  not necessarily based on tone though, it could be the playing, hard to say
I kinda liked "B" a bit more, it seemed to have less "buzz" not by much, but somewhat.
A.  sounds are very similar but A enabled you to play more freely and with more flow-- that, to a guitarist, is gold...
I prefer B - to my ears it's tighter with more tonal definition.   Nice clip by the way.  :)
This is the Marshall JVM 4 channel head? What channel & mode where you using and through what speaker? I have one hence my interest.

Thanks for the listens and thoughts - I've since put back a new 12AX7 in V2 and returned it to its standard layout (ala the clip A sample). This amp has so many variations of great Marshall tones, really been enjoying it the last couple of weeks!

Yes Max, its the Marshall JVM 410 Head! I've been stuck on OD1, Orange mode since I bought it! OD 2 orange is killer as well. So is the crunch channel with a little boost up front from a pedal (plexi tones hiding there).

Both clips were through a 2x12 cab with 2 mics on a single speaker (Eminece SM25 - a 55w dupe of a G12M Heritage).
