The Watering Hole

Played one of our favorite places, The Roadhouse, and it just sucked. I know week night gigs can be a drag, but something about last night was just not working out. By the end of the second set I was just anxious to go home and play video games or something. We had a shit crowd, maybe 30-40 people at any one time in the evening, and our performance was lackluster, to put it kindly. Two shows this weekend, I hope we pull it together better tonite.

I was sober all night too, becaue I was driving home from the gig, maybe if I had been really drunk I would have gotten more into it.

One high point, I was doing a solo that I play as an introduction to Aint Talkin Bout Love. I do a bunch o my own shit then bust out Eruption. Now, Eruption is one of those things that if you are gonna play it, it has to be right, or it sounds like ass. Maybe that's jsut becaue I have heard SO MANY dudes play it just all fucked up. Anyhow, I launch into it, I get a great response, had a couple guitar player buddies there and I was kinda catering to them with the hole solo bit anyhow, but the tapping part comes up... and... I forgot how to play it. I got into the 3rd arppegio of the tapping part and drew a total blank... Fuck. Never happened before... like I have fucking Alzheimers or something all of a sudden.

So I wing it, well... it was kind of obvious that I had driven off the road by now. I ended up launching into Flight of the Bumblebee in an attempt to redeem myself, and it did get a nice response, but by now I was in full on "OMG I cant believe I forgot how to play mode".

Other than that the whole night just felt like one big total chore, I was so glad when 1:45 arrived.
A buddy of mine dealt with something similar to that that a few months ago.  To compound it, he was having to deal with the putzes who were running the venue that night.  Needless to say, the next day at work he was a fucking delite to deal with... ::) :)
I did that a couple of years ago. We were playing "whiskey in the jar", another one of those songs where the solo has to be right.  It's not a challenging solo, and I had played it hundreds of times before, but then I caught a glimpse of a mate of mine in the audience and my concentration went, and it threw me completely. I completely forgot what the fuck I was doing and fucked it up competely.

Ho hum, such is life.

Welcome to the aging process, all you young folk laugh at us oldies, but you are going to be part of it. So realizing that take a moment to think clearly and clean up your diet and slow down on the booze, and dope. And maybe you can slow the process. All intoxicants will speed up the process. Of course you won't listen to me but the future will teach exactly that to you, whether you like it or not.

Good luck

Except blue pills, I guess !!! ;D ;D

The great thing is, I must have gotten used to my prescription meds (which I think inhibited the root) and I don't need them any more. I have a hundred and fifty of them however and I would part with the whole lot for lets say a grand. (they are 10 bucks a piece if you have to pay retail)

I was going to add something, but I forgot what it was...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA  I've been there before.  One time the whoel fucking band did it at the same time.  We were playing some song by garbage and we all forgot the part that came next.  We had played that song a million times.....we all just stopped and busted up laughing because what are the fucking odds?

Then one time we were playing Crazy Train....a song I've played a bagillion times.....get to the tapped part of the solo.....total fucking blank.  I'm tapping wrong key.....all over the place.  Nothing I can do to pull it out.  Complete fuck up!

One time we were playing Brown Eyed Girl....the fucking National Anthem from where I live.  Singer introduces the song I play the first 2-3 notes.....TOTAL fucking blank! HAHAHAHAHHAHA  I started playing some other song that was similiar....but it was SOOO obvious I was fucking tanking! A dude in the audience yells, "Hey buddy, I think you fucked up that part!" HAHAHAHAHAHA

I hate shit like that.  But it happens.
yeah - more usually I launch in to a solo and all of a sudden I realise I not only can't remember it but I never knew it in the first place :)
;D ;D
Wasn't Solo in Star Wars?
I thought it was the man from U.N.C.L.E.
Much better show tonite, but, I think the novelty of playing covers has worn thin. I am constantly needing to do things on stge to alleviate the boredom of playing some of our songs. Tonite the gimmick was "look ma, no pick!!" Pick free night, played leads and rhythms bass player style. was cracking up my bass player and singer. Fuck I am going to have blisturs all over my right hand fingers. Pounded the hell out of the strings. I am digging the feel of using my hands but in places I miss the accuracy of the pick. I can play roughly 75% of our setlist without one though.

I did drink a bit, just 2 shots of Scotch between each set, just enough to be lubed but not lit...

A grand for a month of using !!!  That's not cheap !!!  ;D ;D

These are hundred mg's you can cut them in half, and I know a little about French women, they don't give it up all that much. So for a French man you would need 75 women to get laid a hundred fifty times in a month.
Don't sweat it spaivxx - happens to us all mate.  It's what makes live gigs so much more interesting!  Even top bands & top players have shit gigs...happens!  And the moral is....never play completely sober.

"Have enough juice to stay loose, - overdrink & you'll stink!"  ;D

Rich  ;)

Heh !! So true... ;D ;D  with some I knew years before, I'd need 150, at least...
"never completely sober"...and never completely drunk !!

Amy Winehouse has the market cornered on performing smashed on booze and drugs
shit in my younger days I performed so fucked up it would make her look like a Sunday school girl. Pills, coke, weed, alcohol, acid (performing on hallucinogenics is the best) etc.... all the time, fucked up to the point that on many occasions I woke up and did not even know what city I was in or what bitches bed I was in.

Ahh the good old days.

I think the best thing is to stick to a few shots of Scotch between sets and water onstage; not so much rock and roll but since I am an old fuck now I guess I need to be more "responsible". Hell, I drive a fucking mini van to my gigs, how rock and roll can I actually be?
One big difference - she is a crack addict performing and screwing up  in front of several thousands at gigs and often millions on TV.

So it is more noticeable :)
spaivxx — Aug 30, 2008 Hell, I drive a fucking mini van to my gigs, how rock and roll can I actually be?

Man I been driving vans for 40 years (some of them Mini) and if folks want to make fun of me for that they are idiots, if I have to sleep in my vehicle or haul something with it I can. What can they do with their sports and passenger cars? Ride with some people and that is it, if I can't sleep in it and haul with it is worthless to me.
I was playing a country gig one time and our singer almost shit his pants right by me before I took a lead solo.
It was so bad that I damn near went into a trance and almost couldn't remember my solo.  :'(

I couldn't escape because of my guitar cable and having to play lead.
Geez man....that sucked. :D

Indeed.

I miss my van...but I don't miss buying gas for it.

I don't mind as I am not on the road that much, I get 16 to 26 miles per gallon depending on the location and terrain. In the Phoenix area I get 18 or so, and even more, and on the highway it gets up to 22 when out of Maricopa county and California (we have ethanol in the gas here to cut down on smog) But outside of Maricopa County, (and the Tucson area I get the 22 MPG. Got as high as 26 on my trip up to Bryce Canyon in May. (In the high desert it goes forever on a gallon).
