I have a buddy who is thinking of buying a setup for his laptop. The first one that comes to mind is ProTools LE with the little two banger preamp module. Anyone else heard of the newest, latest, greatest, bestest, etc?? Thanks for the input!

I've heard great things about this hardware-wise. It's supposed to have GREAT pre-amp inputs.
I am partial to M-Audio stuff, because I find it easy to use, portable, and it runs everything, including Pro Tools. I've been using a big box (Project I/O) but I am looking to add a smaller box, like the 1814.

I will second Charger M-Audio is very stable and works with every DAW software I know of.

I'm looking into getting a desktop setup, I'm leaning towards the MBox2, comes with protools 7.4 and a heap of extra programs/plug-ins, MBOX plus their guitar amp pug-in eleven looks sweet, considering I can't mic an amp for shit.

Well I have a friend running Pro Tools HD with an apogee interface, and the sound he gets is out of this world so I would second the Apogee suggestion. Or The Pro Tools Digi 003 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Digidesign-Digi-003-Factory?sku=240636. I run Sonar with and Echo Layla 24/96 and it is not up to my friends rig for clarity of sound.

Thanks guys, I think I'm gonna steer him to this one... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Digidesign-Pro-Tools-Mbox-Mini-Package?sku=702525
He's just starting out, so I think it would be perfect. It has everything! Cinny is right, that Eleven package looks pretty cool! Thanks again man...

You just have to love it when clueless tools decide to blame the gear for their idiocy like that first reviewer!
Hey, what else would you need to add to that bundle if you wanted to mic an amp instead of going direct? Just another mic and cable?
I've got someone who's looking for just that sort of starter kit, but I don't know if he can record direct from his amp.

Just another mic and cable, thats it!

i am a beta tester for M-Audio now... :D
ok, i only got to test the new version of Session, but that tracks really well and utilises the front-end hardware.
i have a Delta 1010LT sound card and for my PC
on my laptop i use the Fast Track Pro via a USB socket. my laptop is only a Pentium M 1.75Ghz with 2Gb Crucial DDR2 but it never glitches and works a treat with Sonar Producer 6 and 7
the track i put up a couple of months back was all done on the laptop including guitar, bass, drums and vocals) i use a Behringer MX-3242 in front sometimes and my EV-257ND, some AKG Clip-on condensers (phantom powered for the drums) or an AKG C414 when i can beg/borrow it from my mate down the street.
so, if you want a great working/sounding set-up for not too much money i'd recommend M-Audio and Sonar 6/7 or if you can afford the M-Powered version of ProTools then go with that!
