The Watering Hole

Okay, so I've decided to give Reaper a try (Don't have a few hundred laying around to get PT 10.x)

I can imagine it's not as big a pest of a program either. PT is a pain in the ass sometimes...

Gotta find the most recent 64-Bit Windows drivers for the Digi 002R, has to be a way to keep this thing in service for a while longer.

Anyone else using Reaper, or any other cheap/open source/free DAW/Sequencer? I'm getting Audacity as well, more as a Wave editor.

Appreciate any suggestions.
I tried it again the other day.  Basic stuff I find hard to do with it, and I'm no stranger to DAWs.  I still think there is something about the way they put that program together that makes it unnecessarily difficult to use. That said, lots of people like it, though I suspect most of them are using it free.
So far so good it seems...

Found a 64 bit driver for the Digi 002R, and it would seem to be working well with Reaper.

Still in the very wee stages... And this laptop could die at any moment... Hah!

Running all day and not a crash yet, keeping fingers crossed

I think I may try running my variax bass DI straight into one of the mic pre's on the Digi 002R and see what I get on the other side... No recordings yet, just tests to see that all indications look normal
There are a lot of tutorials and such... I don't plan on doing anything too crazy, just basic recording, with some VST effects added here and there. Probably won't ever use it for sequencing drums, although I think it's certainly capable. And why not use it free? :) I am still well within my evaluation period, but if I like it, I'll probably throw $60 at the developers. That's extremely reasonable if it can serve my needs well.
Shouldn't there be a way to have inputs coming from one device, and have everything monitored on a different device?

Example... I want to use Analog 1 from the Digi 002R as a mono input on a track, and I want to monitor everything through the laptop speakers.

Shouldn't the recording and playback devices be completely independant of each other? And the respective driver they use?

What if I had multiple recording interfaces? Something doesn't seem right here...

**EDIT** Figured it out, I was using ASIO4ALL to accomplish this task before. Downloaded that, and all is right in the world again.

Kinda cool to be able to record stuff again. Sounds like ass for now cause I suck at playing bass, and also suck at making it sound good running D/I into the mic pre. Probably screwing something up there.

This should be fun once I get enough toys to start doing something productve with it.

The computer is doing well so far... Barely breaking a sweat. It was using a whopping .5% of the CPU while recording. I remember when I used to arm a track, and pray that the thing wasn't gonna choke. Guess we've come a long way since then.

It's amusing to me that I have exactly the opposite experience with REAPER.

Even though it worked fine without it, I proudly bought a REAPER license because I use it so much and it's made my work so quick and easy.

I suppose our work is very different, though. I produce mostly radio commercials with it, recording one track at a time and then assembling. I've set up sessions that I use as starting templates, and am able to fly things in very quickly and edit voiceovers and music very fast. But I do use it for my home recording now and to demo stuff, and it's just as quick and easy for that.

Dave: Good luck to you in your REAPER experience. I'm not sure if I can help, but I do use it a lot, so maybe... :)

I just saw the date on the OP. Holy crap I have to be better about checking the other subforums on here...I'm late as a motherfucker! ;)

Funnily enough I bought a license too as I really appreciate the amount of worknthat has gone into the software. I love it, easiest daw I've ever used, just so quick to pull things together with it.
Yep , that's what I use for all my demo clips as well.
Is that supposed to be ironic, DTR?
Howie lets his wife do all the irony.  ;D

Wow, you must be in the "it takes forever to get anything done with REAPER" camp... ;)
