Well, of course the speculation is that the youngest of the five is actually the daughter's kid (though I don't buy into that), too, so this isn't even her first.

There are a lot worse things than an unwed mother. The thing that surprises me is not that she is pregnant and unmarried; I could care less, I'm a liberal. The thing that surprises me is that she is 17. 17!!! Where the fuck are her parents?

Anyway, I expect teenagers to fool around, and I expect them to use birth control. If I agreed with McCain/Palin's views, I would vote for them regardless. I might think mom and dad were not paying enough attention to the teens, but, what the fuck, like I said, I'm a liberal.

It's not me that this is going to bother, it's McCain's ultra-conservative base.

Anyway, stay tuned for a convention VP surprise. I don't think McCain is above a "stunt" to show how "Maverick" he is, but then "coming around" to a more reasonable choice at the convention. It makes him look like a real risk-taker, while still ending up with the same old white dude he originally wanted, Lieberman or Ridge.

Normally you shouldn't. This is only being brought out for two reasons: 1) To attack the GOP's VP candidate (if you're a Democrat) and 2) To question the values she says she holds if she can't even get her own family to buy in to them (if you're a Republican).

My position is still the same. Both sides are fucked up in their own ways. :)

FB, I can think of two reasons why it's an issue.

1. If a person plans to be the head of an entire country, and he/she endorses a sex education method that teaches no birth control other than abstinence, that person is obligated to at show at least that it works for people around him/her.
2. Imagine, for a second, that Barack Obama has a 17 year old daughter who is pregnant out of wedlock, and then imagine the public response.

In the larger picture, I think the pick of Sarah Palin is exactly why I think McCain is so dangerous. When he doesn't get his way, he is impulsive, vindictive, and rash. McCain really wanted Lieberman, or Tom Ridge. When he told his party this, the lunatic right wingers told him they would not fund him or vote for him if he picked someone who was pro-choice. So, in classic McCain fashion, he did the pissy thing, and picked someone completely unqualified and who he knew very little about, but who was NOT pro-choice. That's the kind of impulsive, pissy, poorly thought-out decision making that makes me not want this guy anywhere near the economy, the budget, the Constitution, or the Big Red Button.

Also, in my state, it's statutory rape.

That's legal. In California, and 18-year-old with a 17-year-old is illegal. I think in Alaska it's 16, though.

The whole background to this, Jon, is the Republican crusade that began in the '90's for "Family Values." Since that time, Republicans have claimed as their own the moral high ground of our culture. Things that Republicans have pointed to as the "moral decay of our culture" include, but are not limited to, unwed motherhood and teenage pregnancy.

Palin supports teaching abstinence to kids instead of actual sex education. I think it is MORE THAN FAIR to point out that
a) scientific proof exists in PILES that abstinence-only education is less effective at presenting teen pregnancy than actual sex education, and
b)her daughter is pregnant, and 17, and she likely never taught her about sex.

If you want legitimate issues about Palin, there are plenty. She fires people left and right when they don't agree with her view on things. Sound familiar? What the fuck? I've got plenty of firsthand experience into the lives of people who raise children with disabilities. I know people (men, not just women) who have passed up promotions or taken lower-intensity jobs to be at home and available more. So yes, I would say shit if she was a man, and her family was raising a kid with a disability. I believe that raising your family comes first. Even in my own life, I have passed up a promotion so I wouldn't have to be in the office 60 hours a week. Don't presume to tell me what I would and would not say shit about. I'm absolutely certain that I am far more familiar with issues like this than you are.

Actually, that's pretty similar to what happened here during the "John Major" years as prime minister. They claimed the moral high ground and made family values an issue, and they turned out to be the most corrupt government in recent times, with constant revelations of "who's fucking who" (including John Major and Edwina Curry...arrrggggghhhhh) . And then of course the Tony Blair government did it all again with the "cash for questions" and "cash for honours" fiasco.

Basically all politicians are corrupt ego maniacs. They are all in it for themselves, despite all the bullshit about how they want to improve things for the people of the nation.

I finally read the speech today (I couldn't watch it last night, I watched about 5 minutes and Palin's voice was so fucking grating I had to turn it off--mix session last night and I couldn't risk getting a headache). But what I saw in the speech was most interesting--that she put her family, including her obviously pregnant daughter with the boyfriend, right up front, had them stand up for everyone to see, etc. I am mystified as to how "the press" is making a bigger deal of her family than Palin is.
