All rednecks aren't republicans with conservitive values. Some are Centrist. ;D ;D
And many are still writing in Dale Earnhardt for President.  :D
Lots of rednecks up here in Oregon and Washington (though there's plenty of leftnecks in the Portland Metro Area).
over at fivethirtyeight.com (by far the best polling tracker site out there) they have figured this demographic into their poll analysis... they call it "American" ancestry.  That is the group of people who identify themselves on census forms as "American" when asked their ancestry.  There is a detailed description of the category here (scroll down to number 8).
"American" ancestry?  Heh, ok.  I consider myself a Dutch-English American.  What, you didn't know?  Do we all look alike?  ;)
They may have accounted for them as a category, but the definitions and numbers are the important detail.

In Joe Bageant's definition -  it  numbers 30% and he broadly defines it as small town America.
But he also says  they are not all voting drones for the republican party.

The stats for this group will be the most eagerly awaited after the election.

If Obama makes a dent into the republican vote vs Kerry then he will be happy.
Considering the state of the union, an election at this time democrats would expect to pick up votes there.

However, if Obama were to lose vote share  it would raise issues about race.

And I think Obama would like to avoid race becoming an issue in his presidency as it is destructive.

They don't mean you.  These are people who actually "write in" American on census forms.  From what I know of you, you are much more likely to be a decline to state.

Heh, in the 2000 census I did write in "Human" as my answer to the question "What is your race?"  ;)
