First to Charger, thoughts on the recent goings on in the motherland?
Then to all, regarding Egypt and now the other areas of unrest over there... What are your thoughts and opinions on how this will play out?
Will they become democratic countries and will it actually encourage peace in that region? Will the muslims take over and the whole world be at war soon? Is Jesus coming very soon?
Discuss...
It's a lil early to tell what's going to happen...unless yer glenn beck. It's a long time coming for those people. I am sure that no matter what happens, Muslims will be in power (taking over for other Muslims). HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Doubtful that Jesus is coming soon tho...
If the Muslims take over, will there be true democracy? Or will it be a "kill the infidel" freeforall?'
They are, pretty much, all muslims. Are you asking about "the muslim brotherhood" or muslim extremists? We don't yet know how this will play out for each country over there but the military usually decides the first round.
What I find amusing is that Howie's thread title could apply for just about any year since the 1,400's... ;)
Generally I think democracy is a good thing. I can tell you my cousins in Egypt are all pretty thrilled. Even though Egypt is now in the hands of the military--they all like the military.
Libya is interesting. Looks like Qhadafi has crumbled and lost control of most of the country. He's defiant and wants to die a martyr. He most likely will, very soon.
Yes, muslims will be in charge. They are now, and they have been since the British and French gave up their holdings. Christians are not going to take these countries over. As to whether radicals will take over, I can tell you most of the people in these countries are young, savvy, and hip. They don't want to live under shari'a law. That's the good news. Yes, radical mulsim parties will have representatives in any trule democratic government... kind of like tea partiers. A loud, vocal, annoying minority that gets headlines. My money is on westernization in these countries though. You can't stop progress. If only we could have waited Iraq out, the same thing would have happened, and we could have saved a shitload of money, time, and blood.

What do you see going on?
What do you think of our "role" and relationships or partnerships with the leaders in the region?
What does Jesus have to do with it? ;D
What's this got to do with Health care ? ;D
Obama is a secret muslim - so maybe he will get on real well with them and organise a world wide caliphate with him as the Madhi.
The US just needs to burn all the Churches and Bibles and it will maintain it's dominant position under the Mahdi.
When a war in the middle east is needed to maintain oil - Obama can simply declare Jihad and deal done.
It will be totally radical and news worthy
Charger, I knew you had relatives there and that's why I wanted to get your thoughts. I hope you are right. Great post!

Just curious.
Home prices rise ! - that must be an old Dilbert.
This is quite a bit different to the old middle east trouble stories - bad as they were.
This is classic "dangerous opportunity" territory.
It will turn into a mix of good and bad
The countries involved differ immensely - there is no such thing as an homogeneous Arab world as the media presents it to western simpletons.
But - Crudely splitting the Arab world into two broad classes as a western simpleton.
It would be in terms of the ancient civilisation countries - e.g. Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Libya
And the Gulf states of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Dubai, Abu Dhabi etc.
The former countries are like Greece or Turkey - they have an ancient national fabric to rally around and an educated population and secular institutions
It is the latter class that represents the most risk.
They are illegitimate and artificial kingdoms created and supported by western powers for convenience and have little uniting fabric for a population to rally around outside the institutions of fundamentalist Islam.
Plus they have most of the oil.

I don't know. To diverse from one country to the next, to make a judgment. Over the years, the ones we "got along with" has changed. One that was a friend 10 or 20 years ago is a foe now. And vice versa.
