Which one ??
At home I've installed the free version of AVG 8.0
At work I've installed VirusScan (McAfee)

Scanning an old file (creation date 2003) I've saved on a cd, AVG find a generic trojan (never found with the older AVG's versions..) named 10.avvu (no info about it on their DB nor on the net...)
At work, McAfee says that the same file is clean...

I've tried some online virus scanner with different results:
- Avast find a generic trojan
- Kaspersky says that the file is clean.
- Nod32 say that it is clean but is able to find trojans on my XLA application files just because they provide to download data from a remote server!!

For what I read, Kaspersky is good enough and it's relatively cheap (23 euro/year) while AVG is famous for its "false positive" messages...

Now, who is right ? It seems more a lottery than a mathematical science ! ;)

Ciao !

I use AVG, and I'm satisfied.
And... I'll always prefer a warning for nothing than a no warning for something.... ;)
Hi Daniel !

I'm with you, but the question is : is it right on this release or in the past one  (7.5) ?

If AVG is right on this release, this mean I've had my PC infected.... I don't think so because of the creation date (2003) of the file and it's almost impossible they don't recognize a 5 years old virus.....or at least I hope so..  :-/

Yeah, it's always ennoying when you don't know if those old porn pics you want to watch again are infested or not ....
Ahahahahaah !!! Have you had the same problem ???  ;D  ;D

I'm protected...  I use glasses with condoms..
How do you keep those condoms attached to your glasses from hanging down into your glass of single malt???

....I'm not sure I would ask something else to you guys.. ;D ;D
I have AVG free, and the new version 8.0  For the first time in years of using it, I think the new version is REALLY slowing down my computer.  Wait, I KNOW it's really slowing down my computer.  I run "Process explorer" and even when it's not running a scan, sometimes the system monitor part of it takes up 35% of my memory and even bounces up to 75% at times.

Anyone else noticing this?

Another great pic, Master Hans.   ;D

Lwb, AVG is all I have ever used so I can't help you.  Charger would be a good one to hear a reply from.

DTR, I have noticed the same or similar problem.  I had to change something in the options to tell it to not bother with my non web based programs and files.  I am at work so I can't see what I unchecked.  I get the warning that I'm not completely covered but it helped speed things back up in my case.
I'll look, but when you get a chance, put up what setting it was that you changed.
DTR, I didn't noticed a great increment in memory/resources usage in AVG 8....maybe there's some option to uncheck in the configuration menu. I'll see at home what I've checked/unchecked.

Finally I've installed the "infected" file...
Installed, used and then deleted. After that, I have rescanned the entire disk for all files with AVG: NO VIRUS FOUND!

It was a false-positive warning. I hope that peoples at AVG will update their SW...

I'm not using AVG any more, because my work was too slow adding support and I couldn't use my VPN with it.  So now I'm using avast Home edition.  The thing I dislike about avast is that you have to actually get a registration code, and then you have to re-register every year or something like that. But it is free, and the advantage over the way AVG works (or used to work, not sure about now) is that you can use the registration for multiple computers in your home... it doesn't check your IP or anything when it downloads updates. Anyway, from my way of remembering, there wasn't much of a resource bump from AVG 7.5 to 8, though by default it did run that annoying link checker thing...
I just turned off the link checker thing.  We'll see if that helps.

I disabled the resident shield.

I also disabled automatic database updates because of my slow dialup.
I use Norton 360. I love it. A Norton that doesn't slow down my machine. At last. I haven't had any problems yet. I have it at home and on 2 laptops. I never have to even look at it. If it's running a scan, it will stop when you start using your computer, and resume ater it's idle for a while. Best I've had so far.
