I can't be arsed to trawl through all the different places that offer this service. So, I'm pick all your brains and ask......Where's the best place for me to host my website? I may need to host Jo's facepainting site as well at some point in the future but that (as does mine) gets little traffic and both are small sites.
I would like secure email included.
Thought/suggestions welcome.
I don't know if it's the same system in UK than in France, but here, when you take an account from a web provider, you get the internet access PLUS 5 e-mail addresses PLUS a personal pages hosting up to 15 Mo.
For myself, I'm on orange.fr for 30/ month, including the personal pages for the watercolors of my wife:

These pages are online since 1998, and it works flawlessly since.
The maintenance is very easy ( uploading new and updated pages with FTPExpert).
I've recently purchased a web space and a web domain (.net) for 25 euro/year.
5 e-mail, unlimited upload space and other small services as antispam antivirus etc etc..

I use www.1and1.co.uk I've been with many web hosting companies before, but this is the best I've found so far. I have 500 email accounts, 1 free domain and 2 gig of disk space. I also have about 15 other domains, and they only cost me £2 per year also hosted with www.1and1.co.uk Excellent all round service, never had a problem

No, my phone is completely seperate from my web hosting and email, and of course I then have to pay for my adsl connection seperately too, although my adsl connection does come with webspace and email, but the reliability of those two is shit. I like to keep my web/email hosting seperate to my adsl connection provider as it then makes it very easy to change the connection provider should they underperform (which I have done a few times now).
OK, I get it.....
30/month is for my adsl connection, e-mail adresses, homepages, unlimited phone calls and TV, all included.
Same Jon's situation ! :)
25 Euro / year, are for the web space/domain only
ADSL connection and unlimited phone calls are provided by another...provider. :)

Each of my domains is hosted by Concentric for $11.95 a month and I get 2gig on each (I have two), 40gig of monthly traffic, 80 users (all can have email), 10 domain aliases and tons of other stuff like MySQL (which I'm currently using tonight to make a test database with).
Their uptime has been fantastic (been down once for a few minutes over the last six years+).
Needless to say, I've been pretty happy with 'em! :)

Wow! How long have you been with them?
Maybe 5 years now? Remember when 1and1 did that "two free years of web hosting" deal a few years back? I got in then. When the two years was up, I signed up for the "home" package, which gave me something like 60x the storage and about 100x the bandwidth, for $4.99 a month. Along the way, I killed one of my other hosts and moved that domain to 1and1--under this one account, I could easily host 10 or 20 websites. Their deal is really good if you are hosting something like a discussion board (!), sharing big files, or you need a place to store a ton of stuff. The fact that they have so much bandwidth and storage space is one of the reasons I can allow attachments on this board, for example...
Just so I understand ('cause this is tempting me to switch once my prepay period is up in a couple of months), does the $4.99 cover ONE website, or can you have several for the one price?
Is there web frontend (where you set things up, manage users, etc.) pretty nice?
The 4.99 is for the hosting PLUS two domains. If you want to make websites that are top-level domains (e.g. thebertcave.fu) that would be ONE domain. Add on fukev.org and you have used your two domains. However, the HOSTING part is robust enough to run MANY sites. Between two full sites and this discussion board, I am using 2 GB of space (1/60 of my total available) and less than 1% of my monthly transfer. So I could conceivably host 50x + the amount of stuff that I am currently hosting.
Things to keep in mind... beyond those 2 domains, you have to pay for extra domains. I think they are $5-7 a year, depnding on the domain. You can transfer them from one webhost to another easily (and that's free) and you can easily point a domain at a different host. It's all fairly easy to do. The 1 and 1 control panel is really nice and easy to understand. They are HUGE and get a lot of user feedback.
Sounds good to me. I'll research it a bit more and probably make the jump once I see that renewal notice in my email. :)
Hey Charger, I just looked over their offerings (which are amazing!), but I didn't see any support for MySQL databases on the Microsoft side (Just MS Sql once you get to the Business level).
MySQL DOES exist on the Linux side though so my basic question is this: Does it really matter what platform you get hosted on? Are there any pros or cons to either?
Nevermind... I just found a sidebar there that covers that very question!
Now I'll have to think about things a bit since I'm probably going to use both MySQL with Microsoft frontend products (like ASP.NET)...

As usual, you get much more for your money in the US than we do here in the UK. However, I have been using 1and1 for about 3 years now and I haven't had a single problem...it's a brilliant service with an amazingly fast service. I would (and do) recommend them to everyone.

I'm really liking the 1&1 offerings! I'm actually thinking of getting two of their lowest packages so I can have both Windows and Linux environments for testing and use (since it looks like I'm going to be doing projects that require both, one with PHP and MySQL and the other with C# and MS Sql). To summarize, that means I have both environments available to me, two paid domains, 20 GB web space, 1,200 e-mail accounts and 600 GB monthly transfer volume for less than $84 a year!
Plus I can now put all my domains under this and get rid of my current hosts completely (right now I have one host for each of my two domains, with a third pointed at a subfolder).
I also use 1&1 and can recommend them. Not a big time user. Still with the beginner package and am nowhere near using up my email and usage caps. And if I was, it's only 12 bucks more a month to upgrade to the package Charger uses. Never experienced any down time. Good stuff.
